Who was the father of St. Joseph?

In Matthew 1 it says:
16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

However, in Luke 3 it says:
23 Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph, the son of Heli,

Is this a contradiction? Is one version right? or both?

The Name of the Father of Joseph:

The two lists of Matthew and Luke give apparently two different names to the father of Joseph:
    - Jacob the father of Joseph (Mat.1:16).
    - Joseph, the son of Heli (Lk.1:23).

 The name of the father of Joseph was Jacob. Heli is his father-in-law, since the list of Luke are the ancestors of Virgin Mary, not of Joseph.

You know a fair few people in the Gospels had more than one name. The Gospels agree there were 12 Apostles, for example, but not necessarily on all their names.

Apart from Simon-Barjonah-Peter, of course, there was Matthew-Levi, Nathanael-Bartholomew (which second name literally means ‘Son of Talmai’), Thomas also called Didymus, and Jude Thaddeus (so called to distinguish him from Judas Iscariot, who had the same first name). Then there was Dorcas-Tabitha in Acts.

So it’s quite possible that Joseph’s father had more than one name. Although it is certainly possibile that one of the lineages is of Mary rather than Joseph.

Yeah, I was thinking that Heli and Jacob could have been two names of the same person as well. Its just that it wasn’t clarified in the bible. However, the other suggestion could be right, but I myself havent looked into that. Thanks to both of you.

There is also another possiblity.

Joseph had two fathers.

And no, the Luke genealogy is not that of Mary. It’s that of St. Joseph, just like Matthew’s.
