My wife and I are having a debate. Which Apostles were with Jesus when he died?

The only Apostle whom we know was at the foot of the cross was St. John.

The disciple that Jesus loved was John. He was the only Apostle present

If you mean followers, traditionally there were the Virgin Mary, Mary Cleopas/Salome (?), Mary Magdalene, John, and Nicodemus and what’s his face. (And the Good Thief, technically.)

But yeah, John was the only member of the Twelve who dared go.

For your reference, Mt 26:57 says all the disciples left Him and fled. We see at the end of the same chapter that Peter has followed the Lord but that when asked if he was one of the Lord’s disciples, he denies it. Matthew 27:56 records the women that were watching from a distance, as does Mark 15:40. Luke 23:49 states that “all His aquaintences watched from a distance, including the women who had followed Him from Galilee.” It is in the Gospel of John ch 19:25-26 that we see that “the disciple whom Jesus loved” was at the foot of the cross, along with the Blessed Virgin Mary, her sister, Mary the wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene.

"The beloved disciple’ is John’s veiled reference to himself and many Catholics also believe that in the spiritual sense “the beloved disciple” is also us–believers in Christ. (That is why we say that when Christ gave His mother to the beloved disciple, He was also giving her spiritually to all Christians.)
