Obviously, St. Peter, St. Athanasius, St. Gregory I, St. Nicholas I and St. Leo I would be five (though if you disagree, speak up).

Who would you say are the next most important?

I don’t know about 10 but certainly Pius IX and Gregory VII should get some attention.

Popes St. Pius V and St. Pius X, most definitely. The only two canonized Popes in the last 435 years. Of course, I predict, my favorite Pope, Bl. Pius IX, will be the third in this list very soon. 👍

St Linus, since he established the principle that the Church would survive the deaths of the apostles, Innocent III, since he expressed the Church at the height of her political power, Alexander VI, since he established that the office is distinct from the man, John Paul II as the man who saw down the Communist threat. That leaves one more. My personal favourite is Gregory XVI, since it is becoming apparent that he was right after all in his transport policy.

St. Peter
St. Leo The Great
St. Gregory The Great
St. Gregory VII
Innocent III
St. Pius V
Bl. Pius IX
St. Pius X
Ven. Pius XII (hope he gets canonized soon).
Bl. John XXIII

three others

Paul VI
John Paul II
Benedict XVI 👍

I always wondered who would be the Pope to declare to declare Mary as Co-redeemer, Co-Mediatrix dogma?

I’m just curious about the doctrine of Co-Mediatrix; wouldn’t John the Baptist also have been a “Mediatrix,” since he was necessary to fulfill the prophecies of the Messiah?

Mary bore the promised Messias. Plus she was assumed into heaven body and soul. John the Baptist wasn’t. One Redeemer but yet with in the One Redeemer there are many mediatrixes.

I don’t remember St. Athanasius becoming pope.
He wasn’t pope of Rome. Unless the OP is thinking of someone other than Athanasius contra mundum. St. Athanasius was patriarch of Alexandria, though, and they also call their bishop “pope.”

These are mine- not based on personal preference, but Papacies that were the most historically significant. No particular order

Leo IX- Excommunicated the Patriarch of Constantinople- East-West Schism

Peter- First Pope

John XXIII- Opened Vatican II

John Paul II- Helped “popularize” Papacy- modern image of Papacy.

Pius IX- Permament loss of Papal states, formalized Papal infallibility

Pius XII- World War II

Pius X- Formally declared war on Modernism; rallying banner of modern traditionalists

Alexander VI- ultimate “evil” pope

Pius V- Council of Trent

Pope St. Peter
Pope St. Leo the Great
Pope St. Gregory the Great
Pope St. Nicholas the Great

Alexander VI was not evil. Most of the charges against him were made by very ruthless enemies.

Peter- he was the first one

Gregory (I don’t know the number)- he gave us Gregorian chant.

Pius V- he oversaw the Council of Trent.

Pius IX- he declared the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, and

Leo XIII- he started the prayers after Low Mass- the “leonine prayers.”

Pius X- he had priests take an oath against modernism (which was suppressed, but was very timely). He brought back Gregorian chant.

John XXIII- he started the second vatican council

Paul VI- he wrote Humanae Vitae, and he promulgated the Novus Ordo.

John Paul II- he brought down communism in Eastern Europe.

I like
Pope Damasus I – held the First Council of Constantinople
– added to the Nicene creed was added the clauses referring to the Holy Ghost (qui simul adoratur) and all that follows to the end.

Leo I “the great” – wrote many writings of great historical value
– held the Council of Chalcedon (

Gregory I – introduced Gregorian Chant 😃 (i’m a music major I should know)

Leo IX – excommunicated the Patriarch of Constantinople

Gregory VII – excommunicated King Heinrich of Germany

Pius V – helped carry out the reforms of the Council of Trent
– wrote a new Catechism and new Missal
– helped organize a fleet that won the battle of Lepanto

Pius IX – declared the Immaculate Conception to be Dogma
– declared Papal Infallibility Dogma
– Opened Vatican Council I

Pius X – because of his stance against modernism.
And because of his moto proprio on Gregorian chant.

Pius XI – a man of unshakable faith! Condemned the errors of fascism, Nazism and Communism.

Pius XII – was instrumental in saving the lives of over 850,000 Jews from the hands of the Nazis.
– declared the dogma of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven

John XXIII – open Vatican Council II

Paul VI – wrote the famous encyclical Humanae Vitae

John Paul II – brought about the fall of communism in Eastern Europe. Helped improve Catholic-Jewish relations.

Benedict XVI – made the famous speech at Regensberg 👍
– released the Motu Proprio liberalizing the use of the Latin Mass
– defined what salvation is and what a Church is
– putting the Latin back into the Novus Ordo mass
– said that pro-abortion politicians should be refused communion

I would have to say, after 1500,…
  1. St. Pius X
  2. St. Pius V
  3. Bl. Pius IX
  4. Bl. John XXIII
  5. Ven. Pius XII
  6. Pius VII
  7. Benedict XV
  8. Pius XI
  9. John Paul II
Though, I have to say, I expect great things of Benedict XVI…

I’m sorry, but I just cannot consider John Paul II and Paul VI to be 2 of the 10 greatest popes in history. Seriously. The late pontiff was a man close to my heart, but I, in all honesty, could not say he was one of the best popes in history. And Paul VI? Seriously? Goodness.
