I’d like to do some learning here, let’s talk about the Apostles. Who were they, what did they do previous to following Christ. what did they do after folowing Christ. They are the Christians upon whom our faith is built, who were they?

Am I missing something? You are a Catholic so obviously you know who the Apostles were! Read the Gospels again.

Yes I think your missing something, it is a discussion forum. Thus discussions happen. Others come to these boards to learn, so I will start…Peter was the leading member of the twelve, Jesus met him as he was walking along the sea of Galilee, he and his brother Andrew were fishermen(come follow me and I will make you fishers of men) Peter was a miracle worker like Jesus in the Gospels, the object of divine care, and the spokesman for the Christian community. He according to Luke was the principal reason for the growth of the community in the early days. He was number 1. He aslo seemed to me to kind of be a bumbler, not always sure of himself. He of course was not perfect, he did deny our Lord three times, he ran at our Lords hour. My opinion on this bumbling is that we as Christians will stumble through sometimes, but only with the help of the Lord will we become leaders in Christianity. I’ve heard priests say that they are thankful that Peter was our first leader, gives us the chance to make mistakes and yet come out on top .

We know who Peter was and what he did. Its in Scripture.

I pretty sure that Wikipedia is not an infallable source but this is from the article on The Twelve Apostels found there:

Simon: called Peter (Grk. petros, petra; Aram. kēf; Engl. rock) by Jesus, also known as Simon bar Jonah and Simon bar Jochanan (Aram.) and earlier (Pauline Epistles were written first) Cephas (Aram.) by Paul of Tarsus and Simon Peter, a fisherman from Bethsaida “of Galilee” (John 1:44; cf. 12:21)

Andrew: brother of Peter, a Bethsaida fisherman and disciple of John the Baptist, and also the First-Called Apostle

James: (“the Great”) and

John: sons of Zebedee, called by Jesus Boanerges (an Aramaic name explained in Mk 3:17 as “Sons of Thunder”)

Philip: from Bethsaida “of Galilee” (John 1:44, 12:21)

Bartholomew: in Aramaic “bar-Talemai?”, “son of Talemai” or from Ptolemais, some identify with Nathanael

Thomas: also known as Judas Thomas Didymus - Aramaic T’oma’ = twin, and Greek Didymous = twin

James: (“the Less”), son of Alphaeus, some identify with James the Just[1]

Matthew: the tax collector, some identify with Levi son of Alphaeus

Simon the Canaanite: called in Luke and Acts “Simon the Zealot”, some identify with Simeon of Jerusalem[2]

Judas Iscariot: the name Iscariot may refer to the Judaean towns of Kerioth or to the sicarii (Jewish nationalist insurrectionists), or to Issachar; he was replaced as an apostle in Acts by Matthias

The identity of the other apostle of the twelve, traditionally called St. Jude, varies between the Synoptic Gospels and also between ancient manuscripts of each gospel:

the Apostles. Who were they,
Very ordinary guys just like you and me

They achieved extra-ordinary things because they were filled with the Holy Spirit.

You and I could achieve the same and more. All we have to do is emulate them, be willing to sell everything we have our pride, self reliance, belief that we can do it for ourselves, plans for the future, self determination, our very selves.

Selling ourselves into the slavery of total self surrender and out of slavery He will make us Kings.

Maranatha, thank you for the link, I’m pretty sure it is not an infallible source, but a very easy format to follow. Thank you again. God Bless Maryj
