I think this subject was posed way back when in this forum, but with all the new members I thought it might be worthwhile to post it again.

Radio commentator Dennis Prager often speaks at college campuses on social and moral issues. One of the questions he likes to pose to students is the following:

"If your dog and a perfect stranger were both drowning and you could save only one, which would you save?"

Before I tell you the most common reply that he got, what say you?

The stranger, of course! The dog will be missed, but it is an animal, and its life is no where near as important as a human life.

I bet most replies were “my dog”, but I would save the perfect stranger… They’re perfect 🙂 j/k, but I would save the stranger. 👍

It’d be rough to let my doggie go though 😦

Depends on what type of person the stranger was…but more than likely neither…why try to save someone and perhapd fail**…I could get sued** 😦

It’s a false dilemma. My dog would be trained to retrieve the drowning person. I wouldn’t even have to get wet.

I would be really sad for the dog, but it would have to be the perfect stranger.

I would try and save the stranger if I could… I would have a hard time doing it…

I know this is bad but I really don’t know which one I would attempt to save. I mean, on one hand you have a perfect stranger - someone you don’t know, you don’t know if the person is a rare type of surgeon or a serial rapist/killer. On the other hand you have your dog, a loyal friend you’ve had since he/she was a puppy. Like I said, I know it sounds bad but I seriously don’t know which I would choose. Just being honest. Sorry. 😦

That would not matter to me because we are all God’s children and no matter what I would save the human life, even if it meant I might be sued, because deep in my heart I know I did the right thing. Also if I had time I would try to save the dog after the person was safe.

Save the human being first since that is what God would expect. I think I might hessitate a split second and look for option 3 to save them both.

Who could know the state of a stranger’s soul. I would have have to try and save the stranger first, hard though it might be.

My youngest daughter came up with a similar scenario when she was about 9 or 10. Her older sister was living in a state of sin with her boyfriend at the time. My youngest told me that I would have to save her older sister first, because she would need to go to Confession otherwise she wouldn’t go to Heaven

“I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike.” Luke 10:21

Talk is cheap. If a real scenario happened where a person had to choose between saving his/her dog, or a stranger, the person wouldn’t have time to sit down to think about the value of each, like we’re doing right now. Personally, I think most people would react to a split-second gut instinct to save the human, but that’s just my opinion.

This is so true, who are we to sit back like the other person said, (who I quoted earlier), worried if they would be sued or not, is this what the world has come to? We are all God’s children and no matter what we are called to save our Fellow man. That was so sweet what your daughter said. God Bless the little children.

Then honestly my gut instinct would probably be to save my dog. I know the dog, I love the dog. I’m a horrible person.

I would have thought that everyone wouldn’t have had to think twice and that all would choose the person.
We are speaking of human beings, life, the greatest gift, I’m sorry, but it is just not something that I can even wrap my mind around that someone would consider saving their animal first. I don’t think anyone is a horrible person for considering saving the life of their pet first, I just think they are not thinking right.
I had a beloved pet for 16 years, she was the greatest dog in the whole world as far as I was concerned but…I would let her go to save the person every time.
Another thought, a dog is not a human being, and we have no need to fear for their immortal soul either.

**I agree with you but in certain states this is a realtiy…and one I am sorry I really would not like to experience! **
Is it worth it for my family to possibly loose everything if I failed in saving a person…NO (IMHO)!
So what would I do…I contact the proper authorities and let them proceed with a resuce also has anyone considered that this drowing person could also drown you in the process of you trying to save them…so I hope you are a really strong swimmer!?

The point is if you “can save”, which I believe, it hypothecical question, you have the ability to do so (good swimmer and healthy) and time only allowed for you and you alone to save the person or the dog. Of course its the person, I would save. By the time the recuse workers get there it could be to late. I would rather lose everything then lose my Soul by sitting there watching my fellow man die because I’m afraid he or his family might sue me.
