Who would you save?

Okay, this question may seem silly, but speaking with children, teenagers, and even college students has lead to answers that have shocked me. So I’ll ask a question with a seemingly obvious answer. The poll is anonymous, but comments are appreciated.

If your dog and a complete stranger were both drowning, and you could only save one, who would you save?

Very, very, true. It’s a very obvious answer, but you would be surprised how many young people get it wrong.

I would hope, on a Catholic forum, it would be 100% voting correctly, since we are taught that man (and not dogs) are created in God’s image. But since the results have been shocking even in college forums, I wanted to see what happened here.
 
We just had to put my dog down because he was suffering too much in his old age. 😦 If there was a situation where I had to choose between the life of an animal and the life of a human, you bet I would choose human life!

That’s sad. 😦 My parents had to do the same to their dog, who they had when I was still living with them. Poor Boo. 😦

I’m glad to see no one has voted for the dog yet. It’s what I would expect on a Catholic Forum. But I also expected it on a college forum, and about 1/4 got it wrong.
 
We had a great dog that was loved very much but the fact is if my family were starving we’d eat the dog. I’d save the stranger.
 
thats a toughy my dog is my baby, his mother was 15 when she had him so i had to help with the birth, when he came out i cleaned him up and gave him a bottle, 2 of the puppies died and my mom birthed the other two, after Kirby (my dog) was born i had to bottle feed him every two hoursfor 3 months, took him to the vet and nearly lost him several times, he slept under me until he got to big. hes been there every time i needed him, he is the onlyone in my life who has never wronged me in anyway (except the 200.00 pair of shoes he ate that’ll teach me to pay 200 bucks for shoes) when i come home from work he is SOOO happy to see me! he jumps and licks and stays by me all day long. i ve never left him alone overnight EVER! and when i met my fiance i told him, if you love me you HAVE to love my dog. i often forget hes just a dog, and so does he! he has his own chair in the living room, he gets his hair and nails done more often than i do, goes to the dog park every weekend and gets special food and treats. he is severly spoiled, in fact i locked my fiance out of the apartment for spanking him! it was at that point i realized i was a little too obsessed and he is just a dog, but i love him. im a little better now. a little.

Small world. Kirby is my dog’s name. He’s a pembroke welsh corgi. He weights 25 lbs, but thinks he weighs 25 tons. 😉

LOL! i wish my dog thought he was that tough, when someone tried to break into the apartment i was in the shower so he ran in the bathroom and screamed and howled i ran out in the living room to see what was up and someone was trying to break in and where was my fearless protector? hiding under the bed. still screaming, i quickly joined him with the phone while calling 911. hes not much for protection but he makes a great alarm system!😉

p.s. hes a cocker spaniel mix hes all white with little buff spots all over, with one big buff one on his back just like snoopy,with bright gold eyes. he weighs about 40 lbs.but thinks hes a small lap dog or cat we havent figured it out yet.:hmmm:
 
I had a dog who I was really close to. She helped me through many difficult times. She was really my best friend, and I am still grieving her death. 😦 There were so many wonderful things about her, and watching her drown would have been torture for me. I know because I watched as she rapidly lost strength the night she died. If I had to sit by and watch her drown, I would always feel guilty.

That said, however, I would save the stranger. My dog’s death might grieve me more than a stranger’s, but my feelings do not determine how valuable her life is. I think one of the major problems in our culture is that people believe the value of a life is based not on its intrinsic qualities but based on other people’s subjective feelings about that life. Certainly, I would feel horrible watching my dog drown if I could help her, but I could not save her to make myself happy knowing there was a human being drowning at the same time. I would be incredibly self-centered to believe that the value of the two lives (my dog’s and the stranger’s) was at all connected with my personal feelings for them. The decision would break my heart, but I would rather have my heart broken conforming to God’s will than have it twisted beyond recognition by departing from His will.
 
Neither.
I have a Yellow Lab who would NEVER drown in the same situation, … I would have him drag the stranger to shore. I would stay dry. 😃

Of course the stranger and probably even if he was a democrat but I don’t think I would ask. Just in case!
