Who would you save?

Joan M:
I am totally horrified that five people have voted to save their dog and leave a human being to drown. I can’t believe that anyone could be so callous.
So am I, but other more enlightened people seem to think this is a stupid question and a terrible thread. The answers are revealing though. I hope my spouse never ends up drowning around them–she may drown just in case she’s a serial killer or something.

This is a no-brainer, of course, but I didn’t vote and here’s why:

I would save them both.

I’d save the stranger first, get him on land and then go after the dog. Dogs have a natural ability to swim–humans do not. So maybe I wouldn’t have to save the dog…but I can tell you that even if I saw my dog go under I would dive beneath to try to save him/her (I have 2).

My life has been saved by 2 different dogs, and likely countless other situations prevented by them. I recall one night where I had one dog, was “sitting” 2 others and all dogs continued to growl at something unseen all night. Not normal behavior. I shivered in fright and they crowded around me in absolute protection and “patrolled” the house periodically. I was convinced someone was outside but scared away by their growls/barks. Or something more sinister.

I will not forget companions such as that. No, they don’t rank with human life, but they will give their own lives for ours without a question or a thought. I respect that and thank God for such wonderful protectors.

Yes, I’d save the stranger first.

Dear friend

I have a dog and five cats (of whom I love very much), I didn’t vote on your thread, the rating is down to someone else…I still think it’s a stupid question to ask Catholics, maybe you should be visiting somewhere else who doesn’t view human life as sacred and posing this hypothesis to them, it may be more of an issue to them

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

Teresa

Saving a complete stranger instead of my dog would be alot easier than choising some one I know well … Take my mother-in-law for example:)

All kidding aside I can see where this could be the cause for some very interesting conversations.

Definitely a stranger it’d be sinful not to…but by heck would I swim after that dog with all my strength as soon as I’d have heroically saved the stranger. The thought of a golden retriver puppy drowning is too much to take :crying:

You seem kind.

I’m going to share a little personal experience. I don’t feel the need to defend myself for starting this thread, but I like people here and would like for some to understand the value it has for me anyway.

I’ve asked this question to many young people, and at least half of them vote against the human. Among younger adults, at least a third vote against the human. To me, it is a distressing statement on our current culture. So, admitted, part of why I posted it here was because I wanted to see some moral answers.

This is the first forum I’ve posed this question that such an overwhelming majority have answered correctly. And it isn’t silly, it is of value because it reaffirms my (and I’m certain others) belief that having God and biblical principals as a defining pilar in one’s life is a benefit to their morality and their value of human life. It is a very useful contrast, and shows the positive of religious face.

I’m sorry we don’t see eye to eye on the value of this question, but i believe if you heard some of the morally confused answers that I have heard in the past you would understand my reasoning for posting better. I never intended to trip anyone up, trick them, mock them, etc.

Blessings to you.

Dearest Jay

I didn’t mean to be mean, it’s just I have heard this question asked alot of times (not on this forum) and every time it causes me annoyance, probably because to me the answer is very clear, which I should have probably realised to others the answer is not.

Remember we don’t have to see eye to eye to get on, you are my brother in Christ and as such I love you, actually I like your thinking also…still the questions annoys me, that doesn’t mean you do Jay.

Only thing you can do is explain to the people you have asked this question to, why human life is sacred and animal life is not. It doesn’t surprise me an animal’s life is put above a human’s life when millions of abortions happen and neglect of the elderly, the disabled viewed as surplus and non contributory and undesirable in society…infact unless you are between the ages of 16 and 35 have wonderful good looks, have a great body shape and a good career, it seems unless you are this, your life is pointless… by the day humanity is more and more dehumanised.

Sorry if I offended you in any way, it wasn’t meant personal Jay

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

Dear friends

Questions like this irritate me, it is the same sort of question posed when a person is on the attack against someone who is animal rights or vegetarian, just to DUPE them, it is a small minded question. Life in all forms is precious, but human life is sacred, therefore the questions answers itself. In all my life and most of the people I have ever met, have I yet to find a person and a dog drowning at the same time…stupid question.

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

Actually, Teresa the ninth, it did happen once at Reindeer Lake in Saskatchewan Canada, in 1972. The man and the dog were rescued. Both are now dead, but as far as I know, it was of old age.And far from any lake.

Dear friend

my screen name is not teresa the ninth, though I get the suspicion you are being rude to me I don’t care to now be rude to you.

Thank you for your comments

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

😃 thanks Prester John, guess somewhere in the world it had to happen on the law of averages and probability, but it’s not something you see everyday, nor is it something most people will ever come into contact with…glad they both survived.!!

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

Teresa

p.s. it’s not teresa the ninth, plain old teresa will do friend xxx

the best dog we ever had was a lab-shepherd mix named Seamus, he would have retrieved the stranger, no problem.

Speaking of cats.

Whenever I see someone giving away kittens in front of a store, I take the whole box of them. I can usually feed my dogs for a week on a box of kittens.

Okay, this question may seem silly, but speaking with children, teenagers, and even college students has lead to answers that have shocked me. So I’ll ask a question with a seemingly obvious answer. The poll is anonymous, but comments are appreciated.

If your dog and a complete stranger were both drowning, and you could only save one, who would you save?
I chose that I would save the stranger, because it is morally right. But I must say, I really wanted to save my dog…please don’t judge me! 😦

I think this was a fun kinda goofy question, so don’t get yourself in a twist. If this is your idea of much love and peace, you can keep it!

That was an easy question. As I tell my wife constantly, I didn’t want a dog.

I don’t blame you… and I don’t have a dog. There are animal lovers, after all, who would think nothing of putting their own lives in danger to save their pet, or any pet. They believe fully in the inherent innocence and dignity of all of God’s creatures.

I think we’d all try to figure out how to save both. I’d like to suggest, though, that when we hesitate at all about saving the stranger, it may be because somewhere inside us, we aren’t sure that they deserve it as much as the dog. We believe, in other words, that our dignity as humans is somehow deserved, and not a total gift of God, or that it is somehow the same as the dignity of all other creatures.

(Or maybe we think the immortal human soul is going straight to heaven… hey, buddy, have a nice trip!)
