Hello,
I live in Florida but visited in Newport News VA. While there I went to church. Catholic church. When they did Communion the large host the priest held up was a darker shade than usual and the host we were given was like a little bit of whole wheat bread, definitely with yeast in it. I attended this church the last time I was in Newport News. We had whole wheat Eucharist then also but I don’t remember it being with yeast. Can a church vary the way the host is physically prepared? I didn’t think so. What say you? Thanks!

This was discussed a couple days ago.

The consensus was that the Eucharist is to be made from wheat flower and water only. I could possibly see how the color may vary, but it shouldn’t contain yeast.

Note that yeast is licit in the Eastern Rites. In the Latin Rite, yeast makes the Eucharisit illicit but not invalid. Other ingredients make it invalid.

It is possible to use un-bleached wheat flour in the Eucharistic bread. But yeast is not allowed licitly in the Latin rite, it’s use would not invalidate it.
