Who's the smartest living Christian or Christian Catholic philosopher

The best in the lay-person category is Peter Kreeft.

The best in the consecrated religious category is Pope Benedict XVI. I have not been on earth that long really. I turned 47 a few days ago. I have grown to the point of becoming aware of then awesome presence in our great pope.

While I think the original questions are too vague (which connotation(s) of “smart” is meant?) to come up with definitive answers, both offered answers are very reasonable.

George Weigel (no intellectual lightweight himself) wrote an article maybe a year go that there were not nearly the same caliber of Catholic thinkers now than in earlier times. I remember his examples being credible, although also would point out that the stature of an intellectual often is fully realized well after they stop intellectualizing.
 
Idon’t think that’s possible to know because no-one would want such a title because the minute they believed it themselves they would no longer be the smartest living Christian at that instant.

Oh I don’t know, somone hidden away in the Vatican, someone in the poorest area of Africa or Asia?
 
There’s smart in the academic sense- somebody who can go toe to toe at any university in the world- and then there’d be somebody with impact. I don’t see anybody having much impact at this point- religious or secular.
 
Daniel P. Horan, Peter Kreeft and Alexander Pruss are the best living;
Allan Wolter and Philotheus Boehner are the best Twentieth Century;

The best of all time were Francis Mayrone; Duns Scotus and Pico della Mirandola (and Aquinas; who was however more of a Theologian)
