Whose Mass is it Anyway?

This is an interesting answer coming from a Byzantine Catholic whose Church uses two liturgies that are always invariably attributed to the saints who inspired or promulgated them.
We don’t have full missal editions, either…

A normal collection of books for the sunday parish liturgy:
Služebnik/hieratikon - Priest’s Liturgikon (for Vespers, Liturgy, Matins)
Evangelion - Prescribed Gospel Readings
Epistol - the Epistle Readins
Octoechos - The music and the regular propers (prokimenia, kontakia, aleiluiaria, stichera)
Horologion - for the other hours besides Vespers and Matins.
Menaion - festal propers
Trebnik - for any sacraments besides the Eucharist and Ordination
Pentecostarion - the propers and rubric changes for Pascha to Pentecost

Sometimes, there’s an Athologion - which usually combines the Služebnik, Trebnik, Octoechos, and some of the Menaion.

It’s also common to have a “People’s Book” - usually in the form of a reduced Anthologion, but sometimes in the form of a reduced služebnik.

Each is revised separate from the rest.

For example, the 2005 reforms in the Ruthenian Metropolia produced the 2006 people’s book, a new Liturgikon (hieratikon) (but I don’t know the specific date - ISTR it being 2009), the 2009 revised horologion, the 2007 octoechos (mostly included in the people’s book), but we’re still using a 1970’s Epistol and Gospellarion. The 1965 Sluzhebnik was in use until the new one, despite the people’s book being updated in 1997 and 2001… and the Trebnik is being revised piecemeal - Presanctified was revised in 2010, while the Moleben was in 2006.

We still use the same calendar, with additions, and the same propers (in translation), and readings (in translation), and liturgikon (with abridgements). And it’s proper title in the current revision peoples is “The Divine Liturgies Of Our Holy Fathers John Chrysostom And Basil The Great — Responses And Hymns Set To The Carpathian Plainchant” - it’s dated 2006, and is (Not so) affectionately known as “The Teal Terror”. It was promulgated as a people’s anthologion, but with only highlights of the menaion, no matins, and only the saturday evening and some festal evening vespers propers.

The prior people’s book was published in 1997 - as a series of booklets by season (and largely using the older text… the changes were trivial, save for removal of the Filioque, in accordance with Rome. Prior to that, Msgr Levkulic’s nearly single-handed translation came out. It’s normally referred to informally by “The Blue Book” or “The Red Book”… but normally, as the “1965 edition”. The Služebnik was revised the same year, by the same archpriest. The Trebnik was revised separately. As was the Epistol. And the Gospel Book.

So, when people ask what version of the liturgy, the answer is, “Whatever the priest uses” - because, in the last three years, that’s been the 1965 English, 1965 Slavonic, 2009 English, and a relatively recent Ukrainian. (The '65 english was a visiting priest, as was the slavonic, and the ukrainian.) All done with the people using the 2006 people’s book.
