Perhaps you all should pray and study it’s mysteries a bit more. Mary was crowned Queen of Heaven and Earth by God. I’m also pretty sure that just wearing it isn’t going to get you into heaven, but by wearing the Scapular, praying the Rosary daily and trying to live as The Blessed Virigin did will get you into heaven.

Remember wearing the Scapular is like a pledge to God to live like Mary did while she was on earth and I’m sure God allowed Mary to make that promise.

Praying the Rosary daily is not a “requirement” of the brown scapular.

When wearing the brown scapular one should participate in Carmelite Spirituality. The Catechesis and Ritual guide I have lists this as;

1. 
   *]frequent participation in the Mass and reception of Holy Communion
   *]frequent reading of and meditation on the Word of God in Sacred Scriputre
   *]the regular praying of at least part of the Liturgy of the Hours
   *]imitation of and devotino to Mary, the woman of faith who hears the Word of God and puts it into practice
   *]the practice of the virtures, notably charity, chastity (according to one’s state of life), and obedience to the will of God

Oh yes, it does fit, its just not required. I think it could even be used to substitute for the Liturgy of the Hours, but I wouldn’t do that with out the advice of a spiritual director.

This is all new to me. I didn’t realize there was so much to the Brown Scapula so after reading this thread I read a little about it and the website of the Sister’s of Carmel I found this as the conditions:

*The Blessed Virgin assigned certain conditions which must be fulfilled:

Wear the Brown Scapular continuously.
Observe chastity according to one’s state in life (married/single).
Recite daily the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin OR Observe the fasts of the Church together with abstaining from meat on Wednesdays and Saturdays OR With permission of a priest, say five decades of Our Lady’s Most Holy Rosary OR With permission of a priest, substitute some other good work.*

So, it does look like you could ask a priest if you could substitute the Liturgy of Hours with the rosary but then why couldn’t you do both because at the bottom of their page they say this:

THE ROSARY AND THE SCAPULAR ARE INSEPARABLE. PRAY THE ROSARY DAILY.

I need to explain that I do believe that the Liturgy of the Hours is a priority, and it is mine daily. Although not daily, the Rosary is on my list as well

I was concerned that others who don’t know how to use LOTH and were praying the Rosary would not misunderstand and think that the Rosary was not quite correct for them.

I agree. The way it is stated can present a problem.

With regard to promises which have been made by visions…(private revelations) here is a quote from Father Benedict Groeschel’s book “A Still Small Voice”, p.55.

“These promises can never be understood outside the general context of Scripture and sacred Tradition.
It is generally recognized by the devout that those who observe these promises must also observe the gospel and the teaching of the Church.”

I’m not seeing where anyone who is observing these promises is not observing also the gospel and teaching of the Church. I think one can have devotion to a private interpretation and still observe the gospel and teaching of the Church, especially since it is approved by the Church.

I have been trying to promote the catechesis on the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel that was presented by the two branches of the Carmelite Order: the O. Carm.'s and the Discalced Carmelites. The Third Order of Lay Carmelites, and the Secular Discalced Carmelites are familiar with this catechesis.

They have cooperated to put together this catechesis to avoid misunderstandings and various opinions put out (inadvertently of course) by those who use this sacramental, but have not yet seen the catechesis from the two Carmelite orders. It will probably take some time before this catechesis is learned about and understood everywhere, but here it is again:

I am not seeing, like you, that they are not observing also the gospel and teaching of the Church …I did feel the need, though, to say what I did because there are some who are not correctly understanding or using the Carmelite Scapular, and that a balanced understanding of private revelation can be a help.

It looks like there are requirments that need to be met for the Sabbatine Privilege. I would think that these requirments would apply the entire promis of the scapular.

The Sabbatine Privilege

The Sabbatine Privilege is a special promise extended to all who wear the scapular and are enrolled in the scapular. The privilege was approved by Pope John XXII, and was later confirmed by Pope Gregory XIII, Pope Clement VII, and Pope St. Pius V. The privilege states that those souls who keep the necessary requirements of the privilege will be released from purgatory by Our Lady the Saturday after they die. The requirements are: 1.The scapular must be worn and the wearer must be enrolled in the scapular. 2. Chastity to one’s state in life must be observed. 3. One must fast from meat on Wednesdays and Saturdays. 4. You must recite the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin or the rosary everyday.

What is the official status of the Sabbatine Privilege?
Historical research has shown that the alleged fourteenth-century appearance of the Blessed Mother to Pope John XXII is without historical foundation. As a matter of fact, in the year 1613 the Holy See determined that the decree establishing the “Sabbatine Privilege” was unfounded and the Church admonished the Carmelite Order not to preach this doctrine. Unfortunately, the Order did not always comply with this directive of the Holy See.
At the time the Carmelites were instructed to stop mentioning the “Sabbatine Privilege” the Holy See acknowledged that the faithful may devoutly believe that the Blessed Virgin Mary by her continuous intercession, merciful prayers, merits, and special protection will assist the souls of deceased brothers and sisters and members of the confraternity, especially on Saturday, the day which the church dedicates to the Blessed Virgin.
Consistent with the Catholic tradition, such favors associated with the wearing of the Brown Scapular would be meaningless without the wearers living and dying in the state of grace, observing chastity according to their state in life, and living a life of prayer and penitence. The promises traditionally tied to the scapular offer us what the Second Vatican Council says about the role of the Blessed Virgin Mary: “By her maternal love, Mary cares for the brothers and sisters of her Son, who still make their earthly journey surrounded by dangers and difficulties, until they are led to their happy fatherland.”
