Amen to this…this is the specific reason!!We must fight against any abuse towards the most helpless and vulnerable ones of society. That includes the unborn babies and the elderly.

the constitutional issue is that all the rights protected under the US Constitution are based on the fundamental right to life. If the right to life is not protected for all, especially for the weak, powerless and voiceless, there is no right to life for anyone. In effect, our constitution was suspended in 1973 when the Supreme Court professed to find written in the clouds a mysterious “right to privacy” and used it as an excuse to cave in to feminist and liberal political pressure, and take away from the states the right to legislate protections for their citizens.is also a mortal sin?
For the record, I do think Roe v. Wade is bad law and should be overturned, but that’s more of a constitutional issue to me.
THAT is a good answer. I notice this is your first post. Welcome aboard!I hope this will not be taken as a “flame”, and I apologize in advance if most of you already know this stuff…
I think there are various ways to answer your question of why we are obliged to take a public stand on abortion, but one thing to keep in mind is a perspective based in reality. If we do that, the question really answers itself.
Too many people don’t want to hear about abortion - “don’t give me no bad news!” - and MOST people have no idea how bad the problem is. Usually other lesser issues - still important! mind you, but not AS important - have been blown out of proportion to obscure the worst tragedy in our nation’s history.
1,953 American soldiers have lost their lives in Iraq so far.
( Forces: U.S. & Coalition/Casualties - Special Reports from CNN.com )
In 2004, 59 US criminals were executed. (deathpenaltyinfo.org)
Every single day an average of more than 3000 American priests, nuns, teachers, office workers, doctors, lawyers, cooks, maids, bartenders, brothers, sisters, … – all still in the embryonic stage – are allowed to be killed for no reason. Well, I guess there is a reason: their parents believe that they, not God, get to decide who lives or dies.
“Safely” and legally. I had a hard time even finding out how many abortions take place every year in the United States. The Planned Parenthood site said 1996 was the last year they had data for. In 1996, 1.36 million Americans were killed by abortion that year. So dividing that by 365 you get approximately 3,726 humans killed per day (at the 1996 rate).
(Apparently, the public has a “right to know” many things, but how many abortions occur nationally is not something we really NEED to know.)
I don’t mean to be overly sensational. But the American media and culture are using all their power to keep this “toned down” and swept under the rug. They don’t want anybody to actually attach emotional significance to it. But the only way to prevent emotion is not to show it for what it is. To disguise it as something else: “not human” … “a necessary evil” … not so!
The scope of the horror demands action. And I think this is why the Church is bringing it to the forefront and highlighting our OBLIGATION, especially if one is a politician with some (name removed by moderator)ut to the power structure that is continuing to allow this horrible national disgrace.
Thank you Jabronie, for your encouragement and for the welcome. I’m happy to have found these forums & thankful to Catholic Answers for hosting them. Laudetur Jesus Christus! (Praised be Jesus Christ!)THAT is a good answer. I notice this is your first post. Welcome aboard!
Because abortion=mudrder. Plain and simple and the right to not be murdered is a right granted by God almighty. Please don’t flame me for this one
We all agree that abortion is morally wrong. We also agree that adultery is morally wrong. As well as using birth-control, masturbating, viewing pornography, cursing the Lord’s name, missing Mass without valid reason, and committing acts of homosexuality. All of these actions are legal under U.S. law.
So here’s the question. Why must we fight for the cause against legalized abortion? A mortal sin is a mortal sin. WIth most mortal sins, we know that we should not commit them, but we never demand laws forbiding them. Why must we demand government outlaw one mortal sin (abortion) but not another (fornication, for example.)
This especially goes for politicians. (Not that’d I ever for a John Kerry or Ted Kennedy) Why does the Church mandiate a politication support a national ban on abortion, but not a national ban on skipping Mass, which is also a mortal sin?
For the record, I do think Roe v. Wade is bad law and should be overturned, but that’s more of a constitutional issue to me.
