I spent quite a bit of time not only proving that nearly everything you said was incorrect, I provided names and citations.

I think that you have lost all sense of reality.
You lie yet again. You have proven nothing. You make claims you can;t support and use a Mormon Apostle as your source. You are so tunnel visioned you neck has locked.

Again, go do some real study

dianaiad;6417536:
Silly girl. Of course I have bias. You have shown yours. We all have a bias.

The difference is, I research all sides, you read a Mormon author and figure you know it all.

Grow up. This is the adult table.
Your bias is not just bias. It is inacurate information, formulated by an extreme dislike for the lds faith. And that makes all the difference. Plus, you have not condemned the death of mormons by mobs nor the destruction of their property by mobs.

AtticusFinch;6418422:
I read an author that you didn’t bother to read…

Really? Who? Let me guess, another Mormon?
In fact, I’ve read quite a few things you haven’t bothered to read…and pretty much everything you DID read; remember that I recognized where you got some of your stuff from.

Silly girl, first, you have no idea what I have read. Second, you recognized nothing because I did not quote from anything. I used ALL my sources and developed my opinions. My sources included several books and actually visiting, twice, Nauvoo and Cathage. One of my favorite books was Rough Stone Rolling, by Richard Bushman. Though LDS, he tried to be very honest. In fact, when i mentioned the fable that LDS believed about translating the Book of Mormon, Bushman was my source. So, no, you recognized nothing. PLEASE be honest.

…and unlike you, I cited both. You have cited nothing, but keep making incredibly inaccurate statements without any support or proof. I shoot them down and cite my sources.

I told you, my opinions are developed from many sources, hence no quoting. But your comments showed you know very little history. All I want you to do is be honest. For example, you stated you were done with me, yet, here you are.

Of course I am biased…but unlike you, the support for my bias is something other than my imagination and standard anti- sources.

lol…no, you quote Mormons. But, what should I expect, you follow a guy who had 9 different versions of his “First Vision”.

You claimed that JS married thirteen year olds. I proved you wrong.

You proved nothing. I could be wrong, but I do not believe I said he married them, I believe I said he had sex with them…young girls like Fanny Alger.

In fact, I have proven you wrong with every single claim and derogatory remark you’ve lol…

I love how you prove nothing, but feel that by claiming you did, you grow to believe it. Did you know Martin Harris even warned Joseph about stopping his affiar with Fanny Alger?

Your law professors would take your JD back if they could see your argument here, and you know it.

No…they would wonder why a girl with no legal knowledge acted like she knew so much, when she knows so little

So…if this IS an adult table, act like it. Show sources. Provide proof.

Actually, that is a horrible tactic. I have asked for proof, you show nothing, and knowing you are defeated, you demand proof from me. Come on…certainly you are better than that. I have caught you in several lies…do we need to add poor loser to your title?

Your sense of justice is one sided. I explained to you that mormon homes and other property were burned to the ground and yet, no one was punished for destruction of private property. Also, mormons were murdered by mobs and no one was persecuted for murder. All of this occured before the mormons moved to Nauvoo. But they had the memory inside them.

And? If this discussion was about the burnings of LDS homes in Missouri, your comment would be relevant. What happened to Mormons in Missouri was horrendous. But that did not give Joseph the right to break the law. Or maybe you believe it did…

Mormons move to Nauvoo to seek safety and comfort and freedom to worship their religion. An antimormon begins to open a newspaper which intention is to incite nonmormons against the mormons. The Nauvoo town council orders the closure of the newspaper. Mormons overwhelmingly support this decision because they understood the danger facing them from the mobs just waiting for an excuse to invade Nauvoo and burn it to the ground. What is the problem? The problem came because the printing press was destroyed. Joseph apologizes for this act and offers to pay for the damages.

Yeah, the paper prints things about Joseph…ever hear of freedom of the press? Maybe not. But it is discussed in several books. And joseph offering later is like someone stealing your car and then later offering to pay…it is still a crime to steal the car.

Should the newspaper have been closed. You bet it should have been closed. It would be the same if a neo nazi newspaper would begin printing inside a jewish community. It would deserve to be closed also.

Andf if a Neo Nazi newspaper started publishing ****, I would be in jail if I went in and destroyed the press.

You have not condemned the actions of antimormon mobs which destroyed the private property of mormons nor have you condemn the murder of mormons by the mobs.
The discussion was not about what mobs did to Mormons, it was about Joseph. And I DID condemn his killing…geez, do they even teach y’all to read?

Difficult to try someone for treason when no treason was commited. And what many crimes did he commit? Please give us some of these crimes that could have been proven in court.

Yes, too bad about the tactical error. And yet, perhaps if you were around back then, you would have been a part of the mob. You certainly have their mentality against the mormons.
Actually, to flagrantly violate the Constitution like Joseph did, who swore to UPHOLD the Constitution, it can be considered treason. Treason is a betrayal of trust or confidence. When he, an elected official, violated the consitution, it was a betrayal of trust and confidence

AtticusFinch;6418422:

Nothing I have said is inaccurate. If you believe I have been inaccurate, post my inacuuracy with your cites that show it inaccurate. I will adress it.
formulated by an extreme dislike for the lds faith.

I have already shown your statement to be a false one.

And that makes all the difference. Plus, you have not condemned the death of mormons by mobs nor the destruction of their property by mobs.

Again,. learn to read

You lie yet again. You have proven nothing. You make claims you can;t support and use a Mormon Apostle as your source. You are so tunnel visioned you neck has locked.

Lessee. I show you names, dates, titles of books, send you links to newspaper articles and official court documents…but I have 'proven nothing."

You make claim after claim that I refute with those names, dates, book titles, links to news articles and official court publications, and you say that I have proven nothing.

In fact, I even provided the source YOU used…

But have you given one source document, one court publication, one book, one article, one…anything but your own claims which I…uh, refuted?

No. You haven’t. You simply criticise one of my sources because the author is LDS. Never mind that he was ALSO a state supreme court justice, a law professor and a respected and admired figure in legal circles, and that the only thing I used his book to prove is that there WAS a trial for those accused of murdering Joseph Smith–and that in addition to that book (in anticipation, by the way, of this very stupid ploy you are now using) I give you a flamin’ LINK TO THE OFFICIAL COURT PUBLICATION OF THAT TRIAL, the only thing you can say is that the author is an LDS apostle?

It’s true, he picked that trial to examine because he was LDS. However, he couldn’t have picked that trial to analyze if the flamin’ trial HAD NOT HAPPENED.

And you haven’t given us one single reference to anything you claim. Not one. Not a hint of one. Not a sniff of one. None. Zip. Nada. Bupkis.

Come back when you have something.

oh,…like the name of the thirteen year old that Joseph was supposed to have married, for instance? Or some record of all those trials that resulted in guilty verdicts, proving that Joseph committed all the crimes you accuse him of??

Anything?

Something?

I would prefer something credible, but from you I’d take anything at all, just to begin the process.

Not exactly. If an enemy begins to publish a rag to incite the masses against a people, that newspaper deserves to be shut down. Not to do so, could have meant the death of many innocent people living in Nauvoo. The nauvoo town council did the correct decision when one considers the persecution mormons experienced before they entered Nauvoo.

by Reed C. Durham Jr.

The Nauvoo Expositor was the newspaper voice of apostates determined to destroy the Prophet Joseph Smith and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the spring of 1844. During the last few months of Joseph Smith’s life, an opposition party of disgruntled members, apostates, and excommunicants coalesced into a dissenting church. The principals claimed to believe in the Book of Mormon and the restoration of the gospel, but rejected what they termed Nauvoo innovations, notably plural marriage. Claiming that Joseph was a fallen prophet, the dissenters set out, through the Expositor, to expose the Prophet’s supposed false teachings and abominations. They held secret meetings, made plans, and took oaths to topple the Church and kill Joseph Smith. The publication of the newspaper was crucial to their stratagem.
When the press for the Expositor arrived in Nauvoo on May 7, 1844, it stirred great excitement among Mormons and non-Mormons alike, but there was no immediate interference. Within three days the owners, all leaders of the opposition movement, issued a broadside prospectus for their newspaper. One month later, on June 7, the first and only issue of the Nauvoo Expositor appeared and caused an immediate furor in the community. Nauvoo residents were incensed at what they saw as its sensational, yellow-journalistic claims about Nauvoo religion, politics, and morality. They were also struck with sharp foreboding. Francis Higbee, one of the proprietors of the newspaper, set an ominous tone when he described Joseph Smith as "the biggest villain that goes unhung."

The literary quality of the paper was inferior. A contemporary non-Mormon critic described it as “dull or laughable,” with “lame grammar and turgid rhetoric” (Oaks, p. 868).* But the Expositor’s polemics against the Church and Joseph Smith were threatening and polarizing. The anti-Mormons were exultant about the Expositor, but Church members demanded that something be done.*
As mayor of Nauvoo, Joseph Smith summoned the city council. Following fourteen hours of deliberation in three different sessions, the council resolved on Monday, June 10, about 6:30 p.m., that the newspaper and its printing office were “a public nuisance” and instructed the mayor “to remove it…without delay.” Joseph Smith promptly ordered the city marshal to destroy the press and burn all copies of the paper. At 8:00 p.m. the marshal carried out the mayor’s orders (HC 6:432-49). That action, justified or not, played into the hands of the opposition. It riled anti-Mormon sentiment throughout Hancock County and provided substance for the charges used by the opposition to hold Joseph Smith in Carthage Jail, where he was murdered on June 27, 1844

Calling for the death of someone is not exactly free press. Lets see what happens today to any newspaper the incites people to act against another people and calls for some to be hung.

yes, it does. Apparently, some of the documents tend to show that BY was responsible for MMM
From what I read, 'some of the documents" (bagly said ‘two’) indicate that a couple of Johnson’s soldiers accused BY of being complicit.

Not exactly the same thing.

I’ll await the text of those letters.

He can’t. 🤷 I just read hatred from him.

Lessee. I show you names, dates, titles of books, send you links to newspaper articles and official court documents…but I have 'proven nothing."

lol…you gave a website. That is hardly proof. Websites are rarely even admissable evidence. You gotta do better than that. I never said there was no trial. I wanted proof that people were paid to lie. You have not done that

You make claim after claim that I refute with those names, dates, book titles, links to news articles and official court publications, and you say that I have proven nothing.

You have not refuted anything. You have not provided any of the proof I asked for, you have not refuted anything I have said. Your biggest “proof” was a Mormon Apostle. Geez. That is like asking Ford CEO to tell us if his car is the best.

In fact, I even provided the source YOU used…

lol…you lie. Tell me, what souce did you quote that I used? Please? You can;t, because you didn’t.

But have you given one source document, one court publication, one book, one article, one…anything but your own claims which I…uh, refuted?

Uh…no…because…uh…you refuted nothing with anything other than…uh…your opinions and your…uh…LDS sources which are …uh…not trustowrthy…so you…uh…lose again

You simply criticise one of my sources because the author is LDS. Uh…how silly of you, little girl…to use a Mormon to prove there was a trial when I never…uh…disputed the trial. I KNOW there was a trial. I KNOW what happened at the trial. heck, I even saw the LDS play about the trial. Can;t you get anything right?

And you haven’t given us one single reference to anything you claim. Not one. Not a hint of one. Not a sniff of one. None. Zip. Nada. Bupkis.

Uh…that is…uh…because I YOU are the one trying to prove something. So YOU have the burden of proof. All I have done is refute your idiotic claims…and you are lost.

Come back when you have something.

lol…says the little girl who can only quote Mormons to support her Mormon position. You have failed miserably. Joseph was a fraud. Which of the nine versions of the First Vision do you subscribe to?

oh,…like the name of the thirteen year old that Joseph was supposed to have married, for instance?

CAN YOU READ? I have several times he had sex with young girls. I provided the name of one…Fanny Alger. DO YOUR RESEARCH

Or some record of all those trials that resulted in guilty verdicts, proving that Joseph committed all the crimes you accuse him of??

He was convicted in New York of treasure digging. Certainly you already knew that, you being all informed and all…or did you not? (I had already mentioned this one a couple of times…)

Something?

Hooked on Phonics is Your friend

I would prefer something credible

You would never know that from the sources you use

But speaking of credibility, you said you were done talking to me. Yet, here you are. Are you always this dishonest?

Never mind…I already know the answer to that

From what I read, 'some of the documents" (bagly said ‘two’) indicate that a couple of Johnson’s soldiers accused BY of being complicit.

He read them and said they support his contentions…or did you miss that? Oh…I forgot, your reading skills are not the best

He can’t. 🤷 I just read hatred from him.
lol…anyone who disagrees with a Mormon is full of hate. Had you really read what I typed, you would know I have no hate at all…

but you NEED to see hate in me because it justifies your need to victims.

How truly pathetic

I did more than that. The website had a copy of the newspaper in which the court case was published, complete with the publishing date, newspaper and all identifying information. The website itself is a very credible one. The book title was given to you, with the author. All quite legitimate references.

…the library of congress has a website, too, as does almost every University and college in the world. Does the fact that the information may be accessed by a website invalidate the information? If so, then you have doubly condemned your own statements, since your posts appear on a website and you don’t even link to another one to support your own claims.

Oh, by the way, I never claimed that anybody was being paid to lie. Would you care to show me where I did? I DID say that several of the murderers were given new clothes and feted. That wasn’t in payment for lying. It was a reward for murdering Joseph and Hyrum.

You claim that Joseph married thirteen year old girls. You provide no proof of this. I gave you the names and ages of the youngest of his brides, information that disproves your claim.

You call me a liar when I told you that there was a trial and that the murderers were found not guilty. I prove to you that there was such a trial.

Here’s the deal, Atticus. YOU made the accusations. YOU prove them.

You can’t, because you are lying and you know it.

He read them and said they support his contentions…or did you miss that? Oh…I forgot, your reading skills are not the best
Ah, Bagley again. That’s not second hand evidence. that’s fourth and fifth hand evidence. The description of those letters is ALSO there. Bagly’s opinion of them is not proof that they do what he claims they do. After all, Bagly claims that Young’s mere presence in Salt Lake City proves that he was responsible, because he was establishing his alibi.

Never mind that he lived there, was about to be invaded there, and the state capital was there, according to Bagly the only reason for him to be there was to cover his behind. He makes a great many assumptions that are based upon his own dislike for Mormonism. You should understand that…after all, it’s why YOU are assuming that these letters MUST do what both you and Bagley want them to do.

As for me, as I said, I will await the text.

Prodigal Son, Atticus went on and on about how horrible Joseph was…and you are accepting everything he said, aren’t you?

Even though he said that Joseph married 13 year old girls—he didn’t. Even though he is so uninformed about the events surrounding the issue that he, a lawyer, was not aware that men were tried for Joseph’s murder–men who, by the way, later in life not only admitted their involvement but who were quite forthright and proud of it–who were found ‘not guilty’ at their trial.

Disagreeing with LDS INTERPRETATION of history is a matter of opinion and attitude. However, complete and total ignorance of actual, provable historical facts is not ME being difficult. It’s Atticus forming opinions, and expressing them, as a result of incomplete and faulty evidence–and being unwilling to look at facts.

You don’t like Mormons. You don’t like Mormonism. You don’t like Joseph Smith. I get that.

However, not liking any of the above is no excuse for lying and mistating actual historical facts in order to discredit any of the three. In fact, if you have to resort to such things, it makes reasonable people wonder if the actual truth would be all that discrediting, y’know?

that’s the problem with ‘lying for Jesus.’ It tends to backfire when you get caught.
I never said I don’t like Mormons, themselves. Instead of answering the most simple question about Joseph Smith, you avoided the question all together and turned the discussion on to me.

I can’t remember ever seeing a Mormon admit that Joseph Smith ever did anything wrong. Catholics will openly speak about the sinful men in the Catholic Church’s history, but it seems Mormons have placed Joseph Smith above any wrongdoing whatsoever. That speaks volumes, whether you realize it or not. There was only one that was perfect and He was the only begotten Son of God. Joseph Smith, prophet or not, was ONLY a man, and all men are sinful, even if Mormons won’t admit to that about Smith.

I see irony in the ‘lying for Jesus’ statement, coming from a Mormon. I remember watching a video of a Mormon instructing young people, for what supposedly was for missionary purposes even though many Mormons denied that here. Anyway, the instructor told them, you don’t have to answer all their questions, you can answer the question they should’ve asked.

While I may admire Dianaiad’s spirited defense of Joseph Smith, I have to agree with Prodigal Son1. Joseph Smith was guilty of much wrongdoing. mormons simply do not wish to acknowledge this fact. I do not believe that JS was any kind of prophet, I do not believe that he received any kind of communication from God, I do not believe that there were any kind of “plates” golden or otherwise, I DO believe that JS was a clever rube with the gift of gab that swayed his rural constituents with fantastic tales of ancient peoples making voyages to strange lands. This might have been great fun for country people if left as it was, but JS started to believe his own tales and started to seriously meddle in the lives of gullible people. All of a sudden it is a game no longer and I believe that once mounted on the tiger, JS could not dismount. Jesus Christ founded a Church, and He did it right the first time. He certainly did not need JS to correct His mistakes. He had not made any. As I have stated before, in the sexual arena alone, today he would have been convicted of child molestation or sex with a minor and imprisoned. He probably would be sharing a cell with Warren Jeffs.
