I’ve never asked or wondered about this question. But as of recent events it has become a strong topic that is altering an individual I know. Every answer I find I feel beats around the bush and just rephrases to say “sex before marriage is sinful.” But what exactly makes it sinful? If it is, then what can a person do if he or she wishes to correct this ‘sin’?

Hi,

Sexual intercourse is the most intimate physical expression of a total giving of one person to another that we have. The only way it can be total is that it express a commitment for life. This is what marriage is. And marriage is a reflection of the total commitment God has for His Church (you and me). It can’t be total for a night or a week, or six months or two years. Total means total. Besides, He designed marriage with procreation in mind. Children need parents who are in the stable relationship that marriage is.

To have intercourse when that total commitment is absent is to turn this intimate expression into a very serious lie and therefore, a mortal sin. It is also to mock God who designed men and women for marriage.
