Why all Protestants (probably) attack the Catholic church?

I can’t remember them, they usually avoid saying their denomination, they usually say they are Christian or “born again”. From observation, in Facebook, there are many who attacks the CC implying unbilicality, I thought that’s indication that they are of denominations that are Sola Scriptura adherents. Just check out some Protestant sites and look for their view on Catholicism in the web. On top my head are,

In the Philippines these are very fierce attackers of the CC: “Iglesia ni Cristo” and “Members Church of God International”. Those two themselves fight very horribly since 1980 according to Wikipedia.

Isn’t Early Protestanism built on attacking the CC? And the consecutive Protestants denominations that appeared followed it’s footsteps attacking the CC.
Having Facebook, the web and wikipedia as your personal experiences is, well…a bit like Don Quixote’s experience with books.

Most of the protestants i know don’t really attack. But when I tell them I’m Catholic, you can see the teeny tiny look on their face, as if to say “why?!?!?”. But to be honest, I’m sure some of us subconsciously do that to others.

If you are talking about online, you only see the opinions of those who choose to post them. So it may seem like a lot of them do this.

But anyway…the Church is the oldest church, claims to be founded by Jesus, etc. To them it may seem absurd and hence they try to discredit it. Can come from a place of insecurity.

Also some teachings might look crazy. Stuff like purgatory, the assumption and all might just look unbelievable to non catholics and so they get angry that a huge group is ‘spreading lies’.
Venerable Fulton J Sheen is often quoted as saying, “There are not one hundred people in the United States who hate The Catholic Church, but there are millions who hate what they wrongly perceive the Catholic Church to be.”

… sometimes a Protestant church claim to be the only true church.
What Protestant Church has claimed to be “the only true church”?Some Protestants will have difficulty accepting Roman Catholic beliefs such as the sharp difference between mortal and venial sin, but that does not mean that they have claimed to be “the only true church”. Where is the cutoff for example in the amount required in a theft before it becomes a mortal sin. To steal something worth three cents (for example to make a Xerox copy at work without permission) is said to be a venial sin, whereas to steal ten thousand dollars from your company is said to be a mortal sin. Where is the cutoff. Let us say it is at $100. Then it is difficult to see why there should be such a sharp difference between stealing $99.99 and $100, where one is a venial sin and the other a mortal sin.

Archbishop Fulton Sheen had a great answer for this…
There are not over a hundred people in the United States who hate the Catholic Church. There are millions, however, who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church - which is, of course, quite a different thing.
If I were not a Catholic, and were looking for the true Church in the world today, I would look for the one Church which did not get along well with the world; in other words, I would look for the Church which the world hates. My reason for doing this would be, that if Christ is in any one of the churches of the world today, He must still be hated as He was when He was on earth in the flesh. If you would find Christ today, then find the Church that does not get along with the world. Look for the Church that is hated by the world, as Christ was hated by the world. Look for the Church which is accused of being behind the times, as Our Lord was accused of being ignorant and never having learned. Look for the Church which men sneer at as socially inferior, as they sneered at Our Lord because He came from Nazareth. Look for the Church which is accused of having a devil, as Our Lord was accused of being possessed by Beelzebub, the Prince of Devils. Look for the Church which, in seasons of bigotry, men say must be destroyed in the name of God as men crucified Christ and thought they had done a service to God. Look for the Church which the world rejects because it claims it is infallible, as Pilate rejected Christ because He called Himself the Truth. Look for the Church which is rejected by the world as Our Lord was rejected by men. Look for the Church which amid the confusion of conflicting opinions, its members love as they love Christ, and respect its Voice as the very voice of its Founder, and the suspicion will grow, that if the Church is unpopular with the spirit of the world, then it is unworldly, and if it is unworldly, it is other-worldly. Since it is other-worldly it is infinitely loved and infinitely hated as was Christ Himself. But only that which is Divine can be infinitely hated and infinitely loved. Therefore the Church is Divine. If then, the hatred of the Church is founded on erroneous beliefs, it follows that basic need of the day is instruction. Love depends on knowledge for we cannot aspire nor desire the unknown.

“All” Protestants attack the Church? A sweeping, rash generalization.

This is akin to “all Christians are intolerant” or “all atheists are cruel” (certainly, neither is true!)
👍 Quite true. Many do not, Thanks Be To God!🙂

Great topic.

Have 3 major opposers to the Catholic Church in my family - all 3 more on the fundamentalist side.

2 of the 3 are now finally starting to warm up some to me being Catholic. "At least he isn’t a Universalist or a Mormon, there are some good Catholics out there" is the small talk that I’m told occurs for those two. The other one is still vehemently opposed and honestly thinks I have left Christianity. I’m sure he is praying for my Catholic soul now. Bless his heart as i know he is well intended. But it’s because of people like him that I am always on the defensive when dealing with protestants.

When I called my former Anglican parish to get a copy of my baptismal certificate, I had to interact with protestants that I knew. And I asked them to fax my paperwork to a Catholic Church, and they were very supportive and didn’t give me a hard time.🤷

Largely depends on what branch of protestant Christianity you are dealing with. CARM and it’s ilk need to get a life and find something more productive to do with their time than constantly attacking another Christian faith. I don’t know how any sincere Christian who prays daily could remain in that condition doing what they do day after day. They don’t just discuss differences, they mock and ridicule endlessly and tell you that your faith is the wh#re of Babylon and to “come out of her”

What Protestant Church has claimed to be “the only true church”?..but that does not mean that they have claimed to be “the only true church”.
Many are non-Denominational in title, some have softened their stance, and some still hold that they are the only true church and that you have to belong to that denomination to be saved, and several have evidence of that by rebaptism. The Christian Church used to be one such denomination, and my friend belonged to the “2 by 2’s” and they also believe others to be Hell bound if not a member… there are more, those are just off the top of my head.

What gives you that erroneous idea?
Your title shocked me.

I was raised Anglican and we never ever attacked RC. We worked alongside when they allowed it which sadly was not often.

Where please do you get such an idea?

Are you maybe seeing putting forward different ideas as attacking?

Peace please! Peace…

The 39 Articles exhibit an animosity towards the Catholic Church spit, and history is not so easy to hide behind the modern “ecumenism”. Laws of recusancy, Popish even.

I was raised in Methodist, Baptist, and Pentecostal churches and never heard one word about the Catholic Church. Had I not had a Catholic friend I wouldn’t have know the Catholic Church existed.

It wasn’t until I was in my late teens & read Chick tracts that I found out there were people who hated the Catholic Church. I had enough sense to find those things repulsive.

PS - I forgot about movies like The Sound of Music, Going My Way, and The Trouble With Angels. The first 2 gave me a rather saccharine view of the Church, but I found the last one appealing. The book, too, which is Life With Mother Superior. 🙂

I live in the Philippines. The two you mention are not even Christian groups so they are not Protestants, even though these deviant cults do attack the church.

How come? They constantly teach and follow the Bible, but I know their leaders are very harsh and some of their members too which is so unbiblical. Though, to be honest, I hate their rabid leaders and some rabid members.

Sorry for using “all”, maybe I should have used “very many” in Protestants attacking the CC. I have met those that are nicer to the CC, they do criticize the CC but not harshly and don’t dismiss them as false Christians or be cruel. What I’m talking about in the topic are Protestant ministry teachings that attacks the CC. The members can be random. Though I should have really just wrote “very many”

There are a lot of motivations for their behavior. People being people will always just make you wonder…

Though I should have really just wrote "very many"Well there are some who seem to make it their living by feeding their adherents propaganda that is both wrong and manipulated to cast the church the worst possible light and apparently they don’t do their own homework and see the facts and errors and inconsistencies they offer. Here’s an example from my blog. Refuting anti-Catholic tract: “Rome vs The Bible” by Mike Gendron

Wonderfully most n-Cs are not among these types.

Sure some Protestants churches would attack and be against a some other Protestant churches, sometimes a Protestant church claim to be the only true church.

One thing is common to them, they all attack the Catholic Church. What could be the causes?
It’s part of their catechesis, which ironically they don’t claim to have.

Peace and God Bless

I’m not sure what you mean by this.

It’s not a question of “hiding” history, but of recognizing and repenting of the ways we have sinned against each other in the past.

The veneer is thin.

Its been my experience that not all Protestants attack the Catholic Church or Catholic’s . There are those who do however, which is a sad fact of life. Most of those who do attack the Church and Catholic’s generally speaking are from fringe religious groups far removed from the main stream Protestant thinking. There are internet site where many of these groups do attack the Catholic Church and Catholic’s for what they believe. The attacks are extreme and very vicious and no amount of reason is going to change their minds. That being said its unfair to group all Protestants into a majority of people who attack Catholic’s, and what Catholic’s believe. In the past during the Reformation there were plenty of attacks on both sides, but those days are gone and are only a part of history. I think most Protestants just like Catholic are reasonable people and also really do not know much about the other but respect the beliefs each has.

You still find zealous evangelicals who attack Catholicism using the slanders of Luther, but I guess it becomes more & more embarrassing to do this since the amount of Protestant sects multiply exponentially because of ‘private inspiration’ while reading scriptures being the Sole Authority for determining Christianity & the Catholic Church is still One, Holy, Catholic & Apostolic.

Many of todays Protestants justify their break with the Church founded by Christ with other arguments - that the consensus of the saints doesn’t agree with their particular understanding of scripture is common but it’s also common that catholic doctrines inability to ‘change with the times’ is invoked. Some join episcopalianism because they accept liberalism above the witness of the saints - but it’s a very different kind of Protestantism to the one Luther had in mind.

The best argument against Protestantism is that Jesus Christ founded 1 Church on Simon whom He renamed Peter & that He promised this church would never be overcome by even the gates of Hell & that it’d be guided by the Holy Spirit into All Truth.
Protestant doctrines evidently didn’t exist in the Church before the 1500’s.
So for Protestantism to be true, the church must have been in error for 1500 years.
But for that to be true, Jesus would have made a false promise & therefore Christianity itself can’t be true as God can’t lie. Either way, Protestantism is false.

It stems from the Reformation, when the Protestants split off from the Catholic Church. Of course, the Protestants had to defend and justify the split, and to do that they had to find reasons why the Catholic Church should be opposed, why it was wrong, the Whore of Babylon, the anti-Christ, and so forth.

So, opposing the Catholic Church, or “attacking” it, is their raison d’etre, their reason for being. Because if the Catholic Church is not wrong, then Protestant churches have no excuse for existing! Perish the thought.

Buried in the statements of faith, their confessions or creeds, of some original Protestant churches, are what you might call “attacks,” maybe denials of Catholic teachings. These statements are ancient, and I would suppose many Protestants are not aware of them or maybe consider them to be so old as to not worry about. I don’t know. I suppose the Protestant in the pew doesn’t know anymore and wouldn’t care anyway, and least in the U.S. when one’s political party is more important than one’s church.

However, that is not true for some denominations, or “cults” as Walter Martin called them. For instance, the Seventh Day Adventist church is strong in its denunciation of the Catholic Church, as part of its basic teaching. The same with the Jehovah’s Witnesses. When JW’s learn their religion, it is by compare and contrast. They learn what those nasty Catholics, and those even nastier Protestants believe, however, this by contrast, is what we JW’s in the Truth, believe. New JW’s learn why “Christendom” is wrong, and why the Watchtower is right.

So, when these groups learn their theology they learn why others, especially the Catholics, are false, and why they themselves are true. These type of groups exist by comparison to all the false denominations! This is the Protestant Reformation gone to seed.

I believe this to be a fair synopsis. I was raised in a sect called the christadelphians, and for the first 25 years of my life, I was right because Catholic was wrong. Could we exist if the Catholic Church did not exist? But now, forgive me Lord, I did not know, I was wrong.

My mother, to this day, still believes I have sold my soul to the antichrist.
