Why is it that all saint’s day is a day of obligation, out of all the days on the calendar?

Because the communion of saints is one of the most important tenets of our faith. It is so important that it is mentioned in the Creed

Well, I’m lobbying for my birthday to be a day of obligation but I haven’t gotten very far…

😃

Well, there are a couple of others as well y’know
Well yes, but there are 365 days in the year, and not terribly many days of obligation. One assumes the Church has a reason for the ones She chooses!

There is a day of obligation at least once per week.

Because, the saints are those who lived a life in true imitation of Christ (most of them at least). All Saints Day is a reminder to us that holiness is not out of our grasp, and that this life is not our true home. Our home is with God.

I really wish it wasn’t on a Thursday this year! I work a 10-hour day on Thursdays, couldn’t make it in to my home parish (which is usually very clear about what’s going on and why), and am going to end up down the road at their big parish. I suppose I should be thankful there’s a service at all, but every time I’ve gone there I spend most of the service wondering what Father is saying!

Yes, Dark Light, the important thing is that you are there to worship God and give thanks for His Holy Saints. So, if you don’t understand all that Father says, that’s okay. Happy All Saints Day.

Yeah I get that. It’s just a little frustrating because I can’t even tell what reading we’re doing, or when we’re saying the creed. I think last time I gave up on responding and just sat and prayed quietly.

ALL OF US are called to be saints. That is our life’s work, to get to heaven. On All Saints Day, we honor those souls (canonized or not canonized, known saints and unknown saints) who have reached eternal life with God. It is a day to honor their lives with the greatest prayer of the Church, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
