Why all the Mormon Bashing?

No, I have also made mistakes in misreading posts. It is completely natural since we are all attempting to read a lot of posts…

No Catholic can give the LDS the bashing that the LDS give the Catholic church each and every day. The basis of the religion tells us that we are a “dead tree”, the protestant churches are dead branches off that tree. My hubby, raised LDS, told me today that LDS says that it must be true because since their chuch started, more progress has been made in the world, ie; automobiles, airplanes, and all the inventions in the past nearly 200 years. The church takes full credit for all of this. I had not heard this, but he was a member for 50 years, I believe him.

Hubby is now Catholic and shakes his head at how he, too, believed every word fed to him until he finally put all the lies together and got out. We know MANY good LDS folks. If they wish to remain LDS, that is fine, we just pray that some day they will find their way to the real truth. Does hubby bash LDS??? NO, he does pity them. He gets upset when he thinks about the long hard trek made by the “saints”, led by a man who used them for his own fame and fortune.

Go ahead and believe your hubby as you choose, but the LDS do not teach the things you have said here in your post. I suppose your hubby would like you to believe that they do or did, but it is entirely incorrect.

The LDS do say that the Holy Spirit has been involved on the earth during these “latter days” in ways that allow better transportation and communication and teaching methods and records preservation. Are you saying that you don’t think the Holy Spirit is involved on the earth in providing inspiration to people who are trying to solve problems as they are seeking to help others?

The roots of Christianity are good, and always have been. The tree that eventually developed from the good roots has “all kinds of fruit”, but that doesn’t mean the roots aren’t good (they are) and the allegory that explains this also explains that God allowed those “all kinds of fruit” for purposes that were going to end up being for the good of the entire “olive tree orchard”. It explains that the original roots will eventually be the source of the tree becoming fruitful with the true fruit that God wanted it to have. The tree has stayed alive, as have the branches of the tree.

When a Catholic converts to Mormonism, he or she will be told in no uncertain terms NOT to bash his or her former faith.

Don’t try to tell me that in your own conversations that you don’t compare and roll eyes about the faiths you left. I have been there, heard that. It happens all the time. Just not at Fast and Testimony meetings.

And not, it seems, anywhere around me. I simply haven’t heard such conversations. Ever.

Look at the General Conference two years ago. Elder Holland? Hear the laughter when he starts talking about the Trinity? IN the highest church setting you could be in in Mormonism other than the Temple…

This is why I rely on ex-Mormons for the truth of Mormonism. The tall tales and lies color everything a Mormon says, so it is hard to know truth.

I think that it is great that your husband is now a catholic, especially if he thinks that is where he should be. However, how would you answer the question of the original poster about why all the mormon bashing? Do you think that it is okay to bash the mormon church and mormons as many catholics have done on the mormon threads? Is that what it means to be a devout catholic? Are you ashamed that some catholics are bashing mormons on the threads? Do they have the spirit of god with them when they do?

To be honest, if catholics were so intolerant like some of the catholics on the mormon threads I would want nothing to do with the catholic church since catholicism would breed hatred. But luckily that is not the case.

And I need to remind you that the catholic church does not and did not look too kindly on its protestant offshoots. Go back 100 years and you will see problems between the catholic faith and its protestant offshoots. Ecumenicalism was not practiced at all. And at the time of the Reformation, many christians lost their lives on both sides of the spectrum.

Ok, let us, just for the sake of argument, concede that simply saying that the other guy is wrong is an insult to that other guy; and it’s wrong all the time.

It is an insult for Mormons to claim that there was an apostasy which required a restoration of the priesthood and truths of the gospel that had fallen away. By that same token, it is equally wrong for a Catholic to claim that Mormons are so different from Catholics that they are not, in fact, even Christians.

let’s call those claims a wash, shall we? If the one statement is offensive, so is the other.

Now let us see which group continues the attack methods to the next level.

Indeed, the only ‘insults’ you can find from LDS sources all involve criticisms of DOCTRINE (trinity) and disagreement with doctrine, not any specific belief system.

Yes, you are absolutely right. Mormons are liars. I have never met a people who call themselves christian who lie like the Mormons. I do believe that they learn how to lie in childhood because their parents are liars and they teach their children how to lie. I would never trust a mormon because they follow that satanist Joe Smith who hoodwinked a people into believing the book of mormon. And those 11 witnesses who testified about the plates were dirty liars too. In fact, Utah is a liar state. I have no idea why it was admitted into the union since mormons lie so much. Luckily there are catholics now in the state who are telling the truth about the terrible mormons.

Gosh, it is so easy to write hate. In a way it feels good to do so. I feel much better now bashing another faith. I feel more relax and a lot of stress has left me. And now I can wait for mormons to respond to my post and then I can post more hate. But you know what…I wouldn’t be able to have a clear conscious during Mass and my soul would be too unsettled to receive communion. I prefer to write posts of kindness and respect because I know that there is a person out there reading my posts…and I do not want to hurt them by horrible words. I prefer to live by the wisdom of mother theresa and saint therese and also the apostle of mercy…saint faustina. I will keep them as my guides.

Not one mormon on this forum is bashing catholicism. However, they do come to this forum to defend the mormon faith agaist harsh attacks. That was my only point. An ‘apologist’ cannot claim that they are defending their faith when one of their own bash another faith, the people of that faith come to the thread to defend their faith, and the apologist bashes them with mormon doctrine and with catholic doctrine.

I have had to endure below the belt, less then respectable remarks from Mormons talking about Catholicism and the evil it spawns, the hardness of heart it creates in good people. I however try very hard to not associate what was said by a couple Mormons during a college-age teaching lesson after sacrament and the LDS posters here on CAF.

It seems crazy to hold every person of a given faith responsible for every interaction with others most especially interactions they had no part in.

That’s right. Always go to apostates to learn about a faith. Except, of course, when that faith is Catholicism. That wouldn’t be fair.

I genuinely didn’t remember any laughter during Elder Holland’s speech. When I listened to a recording of it just yesterday, though, I did notice one bit of laughter, when he made a quip. That was it. Big deal. To suggest that his speech was an exercise in mockery of mainstream Christendom, delivered to a contemptuously sneering audience, is simply not accurate.

I read an article (I think on Deseret or Mormon times) like last week about the relations between the Catholic Church and the LDS Church, specifically that Monson spoke at the Cathedral in SLC. That is a very interesting quote to have in the Cathedral.

The Cathedral is very beautiful and very old. Rebecca would know the details far better than I. But the quote is there. The walls are covered with art and passages of scripture, all beautifully lettered. I remember spotting that particular one and pointing it out to my son when we there for Mass a couple of Christmases ago.

First of all, the books you cited are exactly “criticisms of DOCTRINE” - Mormon DOCTRINE…

Secondly, the LDS don’t need to write such books as “When Catholics Call”, because Catholics are not forever knocking on your door to tell you your beliefs are an abomination and that you are corrupt.

Those books are self-defense against the Mormons who consistently lie about what we believe and try to deceive the less-than-well-informed.

Since every church has their interpretation of the gospel, I suppose that we should all begin to curse one another. In fact, lets begin to curse each other as some catholics are now doing to the mormons. We can have catholics cursing lutherans and lutherans cursing catholics. We can have mormons and protestants cursing one another too. In fact, the gospel of christ can be a gospel of cursing each other out. Now wouldn’t that be fine. Methodists cursing baptists, baptistss cursing catholics…espiscopals cursing catholics, catholics cursing episcopals. And all cursing out mormons.

I think that the Legion of Mary goes from door to door if I am not mistaken. A catholic poster on MaD says that he is doing it for the legion. Now of course, I don’t like to say this again but I will: The catholic church has been around for a long time. It spread throughout the world by catholics knocking on people’s doors, sometimes by force. As colonial Europe spread across the globe, so did the official religion. After the reformation, the followers of Luther knocked on doors throughout scandinavia and germany. As did the calvinists and followers of knox knock on doors. The mormons came late to the game.

Y’know, I’ve been on this forum since January. I’ve read almost every thread regarding Mormonism there is…and strangely enough I haven’t seen a single Mormon say anything like that. I HAVE seen Catholics (several of them, actually) claim that Mormons are brainwashed cultists whose evil influence should be made illegal by force of law, whose early leaders deserved being murdered, and that the early Mormons deserved everything that was done to them.

I haven’t seen a single Mormon say that Catholics deserved any persecutions they received.

Now, I can’t speak for every Mormon you have come across, of course. I can speak to official policy, what the church itself does, and does not, encourage, and the behavior of Mormons in most of the forums I have visited. I can say, again, that you can’t blame the belief system for the actions of those who break its rules.

By the way in case you missed it, I recommended a church for you in NYC. It is the Saint Patrick Old Cathedral on 263 Mulberry Street. It is the first cathedral before saint patrick’s on fifth ave and goes back in history. You will find it very beautiful inside. You will also see a picture of mother threresa hanging on the wall with a place to kneel. You can say a prayer for me. oldcathedral.org/ oldcathedral.org/history.php

Then you can go to the Catholic Worker’s home called MaryKnoll on 55 east 3rd street. They have a soup kitchen there and they feed the needy everyday. They are good people. Saint Patrick’s is nice, but it’s too much of a tourist fiasco. I’ll look into Old St Patrick’s, I’m looking for a parish with a decent amount of young people.
