Why all the untruths about what Pope Francis says..

In this message the pope says "“The Lord has redeemed all of us, all of us, with the Blood of Christ: all of us, not just Catholics. Everyone! ‘Father, the atheists?’ Even the atheists. Everyone! And this Blood makes us children of God of the first class! We are created children in the likeness of God and the Blood of Christ has redeemed us all! And we all have a duty to do good. And this commandment for everyone to do good, I think, is a beautiful path towards peace.”

Don’t you have to believe in Jesus Christ to be saved and believe that he is the Son of God and that He died on the cross for us? If those who do not believe this are also redeemed like the atheists then why bother to believe in anything? I am sure this is not what he meant but it is a bit confusing.
I’m confused by this too. Didn’t St.Paul say something to the effect that if you did good but not out of love you couldn’t obtain salvation? Unless what he meant it was a meeting moment and that if we agreed on that perhaps atheists would eventually believe in God?

I can’t remember ever having the Pope say something and then immediately it has to be interpreted, except for Pope Benedict and frequently for Pope Francis. I admire this Pope, but I really preferred Pope Benedict and St.John Paul as they were clearer on what they were saying, and sorry, this homily sounds too much like the feel good homilies we get at our parishes today. Don’t most people know instinctively they need to do good without it being spelled out to them?
This homily was extremely misunderstood by the public at large. When Francis says, “The Lord has redeemed (all of) us, even atheists” he is correct. Our Lord’s sacrifice on the cross was redeeming for the entire world, going back to the beginning of time, and forward to the end of the world. All people are redeemed by Christ. *This is not the same as salvation. *

We must cooperate with the gift of redemption in order to achieve salvation. We must accept Jesus, get baptised, stop sinning, and persevere until the end. This is when our redemption becomes our salvation. The confusion comes with the misunderstanding between “redeemed” and “saved.” All are redeemed, few are saved.

His admonition to everyone, even atheists, that we must be good, is basic common sense and what Our Lord expects of each and every one of us, regardless of belief, or lack of. Even atheists can do the Lord’s will, and not even know it! By doing good, they are doing the Lord’s will, and “we can meet there” (Christians and atheists, by doing good). We have something in common in this life. But unless they repent, in the next life we will have nothing in common.

Please do not take this post to be antagonistic. It is far from it. If you can answer me, it will go a long, and I do mean long (I no longer attend Mass) in restoring my faith in the Church.

Is everything that is reported that Francie has said distorted? If so, can you give me examples? And tell me where you go to find the truth.
Lomar, I did not know you had stopped going to Mass because of Pope Francis. I know I don’t know you other than your CAF posts but I feel devastated for you. I will certainly dedicate my divine mercy prayers to the restoration of your faith today. I’ve just now been reading todays gospel before going to 9am Mass in an hour and it struck me that I read your post straight after that so’s to ask you to also see it. John 6: 60 -69…

Many of Jesus’disciples who were listening said,
“This saying is hard; who can accept it?”
Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this,
he said to them, “Does this shock you?
What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending
to where he was before?
It is the spirit that gives life,
while the flesh is of no avail.
The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life.
But there are some of you who do not believe.”
Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe
and the one who would betray him.
And he said,
“For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me
unless it is granted him by my Father.”

As a result of this,
many of his disciples returned to their former way of life
and no longer accompanied him.
Jesus then said to the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?”
Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to whom shall we go?
You have the words of eternal life.
We have come to believe
and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.”

Pope Francis is certainly a different character but please trust in the promise of Jesus that His representatives on earth can never lead us astray in the matter that count. Don’t listen to those doubters who tell you ‘there have been bad Popes before so this one might be’. That is not an appropriate Catholic attitude to guide our souls. If the holy men of the college of Cardinals elected him we are to accept that and try and conform ourselves to his guidance even when it seems difficult. After all, as with todays gospel, many even walked away from Jesus because what He was saying disturbed them.

You are in my thoughts and prayers today, Lomar.

Thank you for that explanation. Maybe he should have said that they need to repent like you did. Then there would be less confusion. He left the most important part out of his message. I think he does not want to offend anyone but Jesus was very clear on how we are to enter heaven. You must believe and repent.

The Catholic faith is beautiful. I feel that some important things about it have been lost recently but also believe it will one day be brought back as it once was. We cannot give up hope. The Rosary and prayers to the Sacred Heart of Jesus can only be found in the Catholic faith, I have found much comfort and strength by saying prayers to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and started a group called Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I believe these two devotions are important for saving souls. Here is the link to my group if you wish to join. It is easy to copy the prayers and paste them for future use.
