Some interesting points made here. My apologies to anyone who took my comments as bashing the US. I’ve been to the US several times (once to work) and have some very close American friends. A warmer, more hospitable and welcoming people you won’t find anywhere. Except in Australia, of course (just kidding!). But the notion that rights are only God-given would seem to fly in the face of that magnificent piece of literature on which your great nation is founded - the Declaration of Independence. Not to mention your Constitution which contains some pretty important man-given rights. Like the right to bear arms. Don’t remember Jesus ever saying anything about that.
An intriguing comment was made that Jesus never asked the Government for help. Given that Judea in 33 AD was a Roman province, the rulers of which were not particularly sympathetic to rebels, this shouldn’t be too surprising. But he did say plenty about looking out for the sick, the poor, the marginalised etc. “However you treat the least of my brothers, you treat me” kinda stuff. People like illegal aliens and other marginalised folk.
Finally, regarding keeping the government from things, I tend to be with you on that. Particularly when it comes to bailing out millionaire bankers who exhort us to support small governemnt when times are good but who desperately reach out to Washington (and other capitals) for a hand out when the economic precipice beckons!
God Bless.
