Why am I suddently hearing god____ on TV so much?!?!?

I work in a hospital setting, where patients can watch TV, and we can hear what they’re watching via our intercom system. A patient was watching what I think was an animated show called “Archer,” and I was shocked to hear the characters curse so much, using “god____” 12 times in less than 5 minutes (yes, I started counting out of curiosity).

Later, at home, when I was watching “Texas Rising,” I heard it again multiple times. (There was also other dialogue, etc., which shocked me, given the time of night, and the historical nature of the show.)

I also heard it multiple times on another show a patient was watching.

Has there been some recent FCC ruling which allows it, or am I just suddenly noticing it?
 
I noticed this, too. They let “God___” slide but censor other words.
 
We have antenna tv which has METV, GETTV and Cozitv and all 3 channels have programs from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. It is great! No sex and no cursing. I very seldom watch any current shows on tv.

I have been thinking about getting one of the HD antennas, but my main reason was to save $$$. Good to hear about the other benefit, as well, although I don’t know about them well enough to know if you and I are talking about the same thing.

The antenna we have is not HD so it is inside the house. I saw a commercial last night for HD antennas and it looks like they go outside the house and attach to the edge of the roof. You get twice as many channels with the HD antenna it looks like. I don’t know how the outside antenna would hold up with bad weather though.
 
After Psych ended, I stopped watching TV. 🤷

I think the FCC’s big thing now is stopping “profanity”…although I’ll take hearing the F word an infinite number of times over hearing God’s Name being taken in vain once.

Get your priorities straight people! :mad:

I doubt there has been a ruling. It would more likely be that they just stopped caring about that one.

My understanding of the way things worked (and it could be way off base as it’s mostly based on hearsay and conjecture) is that TV shows are always trying to “push the envelope” with regards to language. They keep trying to slip things through and, once they get away with it once, then it opens the floodgates.

25 years ago, I never recall hearing words like the “a” word, the “p” word, or the “b” word. Now they are on network shows all the time. I read something once somewhere that attributed a lot of it to “Friends”. Because of their popularity, they were able to get away with it. And once they were allowed to get away with it, they couldn’t very well stop anyone else.
 
I think it also has to do with the culture. It’s not passé to take the Lord’s name in vain anymore for the secular world. It gets to the point where it hurts when I hear it. When a friend or relative says it in my presence I ask them not to, you’d be surprised how people respond. But we cannot tolerate it.
 
I have considered registering a complaint with the FCC, but honestly I don’t think they’d care about my opinion–especially in the current administration.
