He is able who thinks he is able.

Hatred does not cease by hatred, but only by love; this is the eternal rule.

Have compassion for all beings, rich and poor alike; each has their suffering. Some suffer too much, others too little.

Even death is not to be feared by one who has lived wisely.

Do not overrate what you have received, nor envy others. He who envies others does not obtain peace of mind.

All wrong-doing arises because of mind. If mind is transformed can wrong-doing remain?

All that we are is the result of what we have thought. If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him. If a man speaks or acts with a pure thought, happiness follows him, like a shadow that never leaves him.

Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.

However many holy words you read, however many you speak, what good will they do you if you do not act on upon them?

do not believe in a fate that falls on men however they act; but I do believe in a fate that falls on them unless they act.

I never see what has been done; I only see what remains to be done.

In a controversy the instant we feel anger we have already ceased striving for the truth, and have begun striving for ourselves.

In the sky, there is no distinction of east and west; people create distinctions out of their own minds and then beleive them to be true.

It is a man’s own mind, not his enemy or foe, that lures him to evil ways.

Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn’t learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn’t learn a little, at least we didn’t get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn’t die; so, let us all be thankful.

No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path.

On life’s journey faith is nourishment, virtuous deeds are a shelter, wisdom is the light by day and right mindfulness is the protection by night. If a man lives a pure life, nothing can destroy him.

Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.

Teach this triple truth to all: A generous heart, kind speech, and a life of service and compassion are the things which renew humanity.

The mind is everything. What you think you become.

The only real failure in life is not to be true to the best one knows.

The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, nor to worry about the future, but to live the present moment wisely and earnestly.

The tongue like a sharp knife… Kills without drawing blood.

The whole secret of existence is to have no fear. Never fear what will become of you, depend on no one. Only the moment you reject all help are you freed.

The wise ones fashioned speech with their thought, sifting it as grain is sifted through a sieve.

There are only two mistakes one can make along the road to truth; not going all the way, and not starting.

There has to be evil so that good can prove its purity above it.

There is nothing more dreadful than the habit of doubt. Doubt separates people. It is a poison that disintegrates friendships and breaks up pleasant relations. It is a thorn that irritates and hurts; it is a sword that kills.

Those who are free of resentful thoughts surely find peace.

We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.

We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world.

What is the appropriate behavior for a man or a woman in the midst of this world, where each person is clinging to his piece of debris? What’s the proper salutation between people as they pass each other in this flood?

What we think, we become.

Whatever words we utter should be chosen with care for people will hear them and be influenced by them for good or ill.

When one has the feeling of dislike for evil, when one feels tranquil, one finds pleasure in listening to good teachings; when one has these feelings and appreciates them, one is free of fear.

Without health life is not life; it is only a state of langour and suffering - an image of death.

Work out your own salvation. Do not depend on others.

You can search throughout the entire universe for someone who is more deserving of your love and affection than you are yourself, and that person is not to be found anywhere. You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe deserve your love and affection.

You will not be punished for your anger, you will be punished by your anger.

You, yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.

Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.

Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.

To be idle is a short road to death and to be diligent is a way of life; foolish people are idle, wise people are diligent.

To enjoy good health, to bring true happiness to one’s family, to bring peace to all, one must first discipline and control one’s own mind. If a man can control his mind he can find the way to Enlightenment, and all wisdom and virtue will naturally come to him.

To keep the body in good health is a duty… otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.

To live a pure unselfish life, one must count nothing as one’s own in the midst of abundance.

Unity can only be manifested by the Binary. Unity itself and the idea of Unity are already two.

Virtue is persecuted more by the wicked than it is loved by the good.

We are formed and molded by our thoughts. Those whose minds are shaped by selfless thoughts give joy when they speak or act. Joy follows them like a shadow that never leaves them.

these are good pure teachings they are not about god but they are the way to find happiness here on earth they have nothing to do with heaven or hell.😃

So what if 50,000 people drowned? It was simply a natural process ending some other chemical reactions. So what if that baby’s life was snuffed out by SIDS? It is nothing more than the natural process of culling the human herd of the weak or unfit. There is nothing good or bad in them. It is just something that happens, like the phases of the moon or the changing of the seasons.
What’s shocking is that you seem to believe that people are in need of a supernatural God in order for them to feel empathy, sadness and loss.

That somehow, the belief in a God that chooses to remain invisible to his children, is necessary for a parent to understand that the loss of a child, is a very sad, cruel and horrific event.

That without a God, humans are incapable of grasping the horror found in a genocide of Biblical proportions, such as in Rwanda or Nazi Germany.

Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.

Such a dangerous statement, especially if one is mentally ill and has difficulty in differentiating between reality and delusion.

Maybe Buddha didn’t think about that…hmmm…

Belief in God makes the horrors you mentiond objective evil. Without God those horrors are a matter of opinion. Without God, how can one prove life has value?

I wonder what God thought about the value of the Canaanite people?

That’s where you get your morality? A supernatural God urging one race of people to slaughter, exterminate and utterly destroy another race of people?

That is morality that I can do without, thank you very much.

christianpost.com/article/20090814/survey-profiles-nonreligious-americans/index.html

The survey found few differences between the religious and nonreligious group in regards to mental well-being. Contrary to popular belief, the nonreligious population is not any less happy or satisfied with life than the religious, the survey suggested. Reported life-satisfaction was well within the average range for both groups. Self-described spirituals, however, were less likely to report being satisfied with life.

Yet another atheist who takes a single event from the Scriptures and after romving said event from any context feels arrogant enough to pass judgement on God. God owes us nothing, but in His mercy did not even withold Himself in the form of Jesus. And you, one of His creations, feel that you have the right to pass judgement on God, who is holy beyond comprehension? That is the sin of Satan.

I actually meant dry in the British sense (humor and all).

Humor is good. 🙂
Here is an example of one of his articles in his debate with a materialist by the name of Blatchford rehgarding miracles (something he later confessed to writing “while in a state of hilarity”):
Code:
“He [Blatchford] does not question them. He does not pretend to be agnostic about them. He does not suspend his judgment until they shall be proved. He denies them. Faced with this astounding dogma I asked why Mr. Blatchford why he thought miracles could not occur. He replied that the universe was governed by laws. Obviously this answer is of no use whatever, for we cannot call a thing impossible because the world is governed by laws unless we know what laws. Does Mr. Blatchford know all about the laws in the universe? And if he does not know about the laws, how can he possibly know anything about the exceptions? For obviously the mere fact that a thing happens seldom, under odd circumstances, and no explanation within our knowledge, is no proof that it is against natural law. That would apply to Siamese twins or to a new comet, or to radium 3 years ago. The question of miracles is merely this. Do you know why a pumpkin goes on being a pumpkin? If you do not you cannot possibly tell whether a pumpkin could possibly turn into a coach or couldn’t, that is all. All the other scientific expressions you are in the habit of using at breakfast are words and wind. You say, ‘It is a law of nature that pumpkins should remain pumpkins.’ That only means that pumpkins generally do remain pumpkins, which is obvious. It does not say why they do. You say, ‘Experience is against it.’ That only means ‘I have known many pumpkins intimately and none of them turned into coaches.’ There was a great Irish rationalist of this school, possibly related to Mr. Leckey, when he was told that a witness has seen him commit murder said that he could bring a hundred witnesses who did not see him commit it. You say, ‘The modern world is against it.’ That means a mob of men in London and Birmingham and Chicago in a thoroughly pumpkiny state of mind cannot work miracles by faith. You say, ‘Science is against it.’ That means so long as pumpkins are pumpkins their conduct is pumpkiny, and bears no resemblance to the behavior of a coach. That is fairly obvious. What Christianity says is merely this: that this repetition in nature has its origin not in a thing resembling a law, but a thing resembling a will. Of course its phrase of heavenly father is drawn from an earthly father. Quite equally Mr. Blatchford’s phrase of a universal law is a metaphor from an act of Parliament. But Christianity holds the world and its repetition came by will or love, as children are begotten by a father, and therefore that other and different things might come of it. Briefly, he believes that a god who could do anything so extraordinary as making pumpkins go on being pumpkins is like the prophet Habakkuk capable de touts. If you do not thing it extraordinary that a pumpkin is always a pumpkin, think again. You have not even begun philosophy; you have not even seen a pumpkin.”

Actually, we feel empathy sadness and loss because we are created by God. As C.S. Lewis wrote, “If you are really a product of a materialistic universe, how is it that you don’t feel at home there?”

My answer would be Original Sin as the cause (a theologian could probably answer it better than I can…
The reason I “marvel” at the materialist’s attitude is that they expect us believe there is no creator, that we are merely the product of a long chain of chemical processes. If that is all we are and nothing more, than how can we call anything good or bad? Diseases and natural disasters are nothing more than more chemical processes. Take that tsunami that hit a few years back. So what if 50,000 people drowned? It was simply a natural process ending some other chemical reactions. So what if that baby’s life was snuffed out by SIDS? It is nothing more than the natural process of culling the human herd of the weak or unfit. There is nothing good or bad in them. Natural disasters and diseases are bad for us, in a survival and happiness sense. They are not good or bad in a *moral *sense. Morality is strictly a human concept that has no meaning when applied to the inanimate universe.

Now, back to God. Why would a loving and merciful God create such horrible things? The ‘original sin’ excuse doesn’t wash. God would still have to have created diseases, or at least created the conditions for them to develop. And since He’s omniscient, he would have known their effects before He created the universe.

My answer is: He didn’t create them, because he doesn’t exist.

If you pray to Him, and truly seek Him with all your heart, He will assure you of His existence, as well as His infinite love for you, and all of His children! I’m praying for you.🙂

With regard to suffering, we all question the reasons for tragedies.Yet, if we believe in a God who is omniscient, as you said, and All-Loving, as I believe, He will not forsake us.
May He bless your heart, as you open yourself to His love. Peace.
