Why are atheists so unhappy?

He’s my father, my brother, and the Spirit that feels me with grace. He is love and mercy and all that is good. He gives me light and hope even in my darkest days, I cannot live without him.
all that is merely what you’ve convinced yourself god is … but if I were raised thinking I had an angel who was all powerful and who protected me at all times, I could easily conjure up the same sort of images in my mind. In fact I bet those images would be so profound I could work myself into an emotional frenzy imagining the vastness of my angels power, and his mercy and love for little old me. He would rid me of my sorrow, be my comforter, one day he would even make me immortal. What an angel, how could I not love such a creature with all my heart?

So what you’re saying here is not a description of any real god, it’s merely a description of characteristics you believe embody this god you believe exists. However, the bible isn’t true, beyond the possibility of an occasionally accurate depiction of historical events. We know it’s highly unlikely an event like the Exodus ever happened (from examining Egyptian historical records), and we know (through evidence of evolution) that an Adam & Eve sort of creation story didn’t happen, and we also know an event like the tower of babel cannot be true (we know human life originated in Africa, our prehistoric ancestors migrated to different regions of earth, and because of different extrinsic conditions such as climate we evolved in different ways, therefore it’s impossible to think all races of fully evolved humans lived in a single city and spoke a single language until one day a god became angry and caused them to speak a variety of different languages and migrate to different parts of the earth, becoming the different peoples we know of today). Indeed we even know quite a bit about linguistic history … so we know (not think) most of these stories are simply ancient myths.

blah blah blah blah blah . . . . . . that’s all I heard.

The Catholic Church is very much interested in science it just held a meeting not so long ago (in March or May I believe) on science (many scientists were there even Stephen Hawking).
So? Moreover, you act like I care what Hawkins does. These things are not relevant to my point. The church is premised on false mythology. There was no god-man who cheated death, no guy who split the red sea, no Adam or Eve, no tower of babel, no exodus, none of it is true. Therefore, the way I see it … religion is a wasteful diversion of human talent and economic capital; or even if there is some intrinsic value in religion (which I doubt) it certainly has no basis to claim the moral high ground and dictate to us how we should fashion our marriage laws, conduct our scientific research, etc.

Some Catholics have true lasting happiness and some atheists have it too because they let go of their desires and wants, appreciate what is already here within us. The Catholics and atheists who don’t are unhappy.

Don’t you have family to convert? They should be high on your priority list, no?
most of my family is atheist or agnostic … but I don’t I think simply saying what I think should be construed as trying to “convert” anyone. I’m under no delusions here … I know no one here will wake up tomorrow & declare they’re atheist or agnostic.

I hate to say it … but most people can’t handle the truth.

Converting people is not the way to happiness. It is not like selling girl scout cookies.

I agree … or even worse, those homeless guys by the trains and buses who are always preaching to me about god (how annoying is that, some bum just stopped shooting dope yesterday … now he thinks he has something valuable to teach someone like me, with I’m sure more education than his entire ancestral line … dating back to neanderthal man :):):)).

If it’s a wasteful diversion then I suggest you take all the religious people in the world and put them in a great big reeducation camp so we can all learn how to be rational thinking people (what a utopia that would be) free of the disgusting stains of superstition and myth. An atheist dream come true. Good luck.

the bottom line is religion or lack thereof is no predictor of happiness (as far as I can tell anyway).

hmmm … kidding 😛

btw I think disgusting is a harsh word (one I would never use). Religion is not disgusting, it’s just not true.
