Why are Catholics obsessed with OSAS? Protestants are split down the middle on the issue.

There are some very active Catholics on this forum who don’t seem to differentiate between various distinct Protestant theologies. I don’t like OSAS either–it’s heretical, and patient of antinomianism–but most Protestants who believe in it won’t be hanging out here.

Having been both (an Evangelical and a Catholic) I think any “obsession” on the Catholic side is probably a side-effect of having been beaten over the head with it by Evangelicals and Fundamentalists who proselytize Catholics by starting with “if you died tonight, would you go to Heaven?” and then proceed to “prove” that the Catholic has been misled because they were not taught that they could “know” that they are saved.

I agree in part with NHInsider, but I also think it is important to Catholics because souls are at stake. A cousin of mine believes in OSAS and, after his altar call, has since led a life of sex, drugs, and alcohol. But he says he has no worries because “Once saved, always saved!” Admittedly, most proponents of OSAS will not act as my cousin, but as a Catholic, I believe my cousin’s soul may be in jeopardy. I obviously leave the judgment up to God, but feel called to help my cousin however I can. That is why I, at least, am ‘obsessed’ with OSAS 🙂

I’m glad many Catholics understand that this very issue has great diversity within Protestantism, which is related to the topics of free will, election, altar calls, false professions of faith, perseverance of the saints, etc… Actually, there’s Protestant theology on this OSAS issue which is very similar to Catholic theology. I just noticed that there is a great attack by some Catholics against OSAS. That same attack against OSAS is made on Protestant sites too, by Protestants. In addition, OSAS means something completely different between Arminian Protestants and Calvinist Protestants. A common slang for Protestants against OSAS will say something like this: Once Saved always saved if you don’t fall away.

It is the duty of the Church to defend the faith that was deposited ‘once for all’. Our vigorous defense of the Apostolic Teaching may seem like some to be an “attack”, but it is only our obligation.

I think that OSAS is in complete violation of both the letter of Moral Law and the spirit of it. I think that Faith is something that you have to strive to work for and with every single day. I think that it isn’t just something that you do once and then you have a free pass. Of course, I was an atheist/agnostic for the bulk of my 28 years, and thus I am incredibly grateful to the Lord for giving me another chance. I believe that I thank him properly by coming to know Him better, trying! to live my life to the Christian ideal, and by always getting back up no matter how many times I fall.

Catholics are not “obsessed” with OSAS, it is those who want this false teaching to be true that are obsessed!

**Catholics are only obsessed with one thing, the Truth, Jesus the Christ!

OSAS was never even heard of until recently.

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Ora Pro Nobis Peccatoribus!

I’d say that if Catholics seem obsessed with OSAS, it’s because the few protestants who believe it seem to single out Catholics to concentrate their conversion powers on. When I was in college, OSAS people generally left me alone even though I was a protestant who utterly rejected that doctrine. However, once I became catholic, it seemed like they were everywhere and coming at me contstantly. I don’t know why that is, but it’s just my experience. This did lead me as a catholic to have a greater dislike of the doctrine than I did as a protestant that they didn’t seem to care about. 🤷

Why are Catholics obsessed with OSAS?

we are supposed to be very aggressive against satanic teachings…

Not just Catholic and Anglicans, but Lutherans also oppose OSAS, I believe Methodists also hold the view that Salvation can be lost if there is a loss of faith.

Honestly reading this made me cringe, because I have heard it that many times. I have dated two protestants and I have heard that exact sentence said to me many many times throughout the years. That statement is then also followed by “I think you need to have faith in God and his word in the bible if you don’t know for sure you are saved”. I guess it’s good to know that I didn’t pick the only people who are retarded and that many others say those things also. It has gotten to the point that I will probably beat myself over the head if I even hear the word “saved” once more.

I cringe when I hear someone say “I know that you are saved” because I believe that the Lord alone is my judge. If I am not fit to judge others, nor myself, then they are not fit to judge me (or themselves) either. Of course, flying off the handle at them and yelling “REPENT, SINNER!” does no good, though that does not stop many people (on both sides of OSAS) from trying this method. The next person it works on, methinks, will be the first. 😉

A lot of the Catholics I know wouldn’t really understand what “once saved, always saved” meant. I’d have to explain it, and they’d be confused. Those that do get it and oppose it are generally those who’ve been singled out by a local congregation that sends its members all over town asking people those sorts of questions.

My favorite witnessed exchange:

Evangelical teenager: “Do you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ?”
Catholic college student: “Why, yes. I eat Him.”
Evangelical teenager:

I never see this, so, I thought I was the only one who felt this way. I thought perhaps I was just ‘sheltered’ from it because of my prior affiliation with the Lutheran Church which does not give credence to such a mentality. Where I lived the first 40 years of my life, I never, NEVER heard of OSAS! Then we moved. Again, I joined a Lutheran church, so, was again, for awhile, not aware of OSAS. It seems like a fad among certain denominations here. Now, as a Catholic, I am not obsessed with it, but, I’ve heard enough of it, especially since ‘it’ now lives across the street from me.

My son attends a Methodist church. I am Catholic. My neighbor has told his kids that since we do not attend their church, we don’t really go to church! My son and his friend were told that his church rebaptizes Catholics ‘properly.’ The real clincher came when his faher died suddenly. He was gone for about a week , helping his mother, making funeral arrangements, etc. We took care of his animals and his lawn, mail, etc. while they were gone. I came back from work and saw they were home, and my son was over with them. I went over to see how they were doing. The guys were busy, so, I went to speak with his wife. As soon as he saw me, he came over. Before I could say a word, he said, none too kindly, “Well, this has been the worst and best week of my life. But, at least I know that my father is in Heaven, and I will see him again some day!” Then, he turned and walked away from me!! I was beyond shocked. I just said good-bye to his wife and went home. She never said a word. I think even she was surprised.

I wouldn’t even attempt to discuss such a thing with someone who is grieving the loss of a parent., though everything inside me was screaming, “No, you don’t know, only God knows, but we can have hope.” The subject has not come up since. I admit to finding his words and actions offensive. I pray for him, for his family, and for his father’s soul.

I am not obsessed, but, I have heard enough. I find it a dangerous concept in its most extreme form. I have listened to ‘testimonies’ that were equally offensive to God’s sole Authority to make final judgment. I do understand different denominations have different understandings of OSAS.

Yes, I agree. I think the asker really meant was “why are CAF members obsessed with OSAS?”

It is a topic which recurs over and over in this forum. But my experience is that it doesn’t crop up in ordinary life, outside of CAF.

Because it is the second most dangerous false Christian doctrine, following The Bible Alone.

There seems to be a general attitude among these people, that as long as your Protistant you’re at least Christian. I had a friend “get on her soap box” once, and ask me to leave the CC for just any Protestant Church! I was quite flabbergasted actually. It’s the reason why I studied apologetics actually. If you’re going to try and convert me, I think it’s only fair that I’m going to try and convert you back.

Of course this attitude is mainly held by those protistants who are truely convinced by the “invisible church” doctrine, and think that all protistants completely agree on all the “essential doctrine”, with out actually knowing what other protistants believe.
