Why are Catholics often this way?

In Jewish thought, “messiah” does not mean deity, or God. We believe, and have always believed, that the Messiah would be a mortal man, sent BY God to deliver the Jewish people physically and spiritually. Only Christians equate “messiah” with deity.

The word “Mashiach” (messiah) in Hebrew means “anointed one”. That’s it. In the Bible, King David, King Saul and King Solomon were all called “messiah” because they had been anointed as kings.

There is no record in the NT of Jesus being anointed, though I know Christians interpret the descent of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove, as “counting” for that.

I think the easiest way to answer your question is because the Catholic Faith is very very hard to live by and there is so much to learn. And to be honest with you it takes a life time to really understand everything in the Catholic Faith and you must study pretty much every day. It is not a faith that you can do whatever you choose you must learn what is the right way. Its the way of the church. And that cant be accomplished in a few years. I am the same age as you and have been Catholic my whole life, and im still learning. I went to a Catholic school, havent missed Church on Sunday unless i was really sick in my life. Maybe 5 times in my life that i really could have went for another reason, and im still learning. I think if you asked a Bishop, Priest or the Pope himself he will tell you they themselves are still learning. Its not a religion its a way of life. And like other things in life somedays you take time to pray and read the bible and some you dont. Some days you do well others you mess up. I think people think that if you are Catholic your not supposed to be human. And you must remember the Pope himself reveals things to us when God wants us to know them. He is the person who is still teaching us. And God is still teaching him. Hope this helps, i tried to be as honest as i could and talk from the heart.

I didn’t know where else to post this, and I TRULY DO NOT wish to offend anyone, but I have made an observation over the last 48 years of my life that puzzles and saddens me.

As a religious Jew, I have spent my entire life studying other religions, as well as my own. I have met with many religious authorities, studied many religions, all in an effort not to be like a few Catholic girls who beat me up as a child, saying to me, “You killed Our Lord”. I never wanted to be as ignorant of the religions of others as they evidently were of not only mine, but their own.

I have met many knowledgeable Protestants, Catholics, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus and others in my life, but one thing I have observed time and again: many Catholics not only are totally ignorant of the religions of others, but also of their own. WHY is this?

To give one example, a woman I knew years ago in the pro-life movement insisted to me that the immaculate conception was the Catholic belief that when Mary conceived Jesus, she was a virgin.

I explained to her that that belief is called the virgin birth. I told her that the belief of the immaculate conception is the belief that when MARY was conceived in HER mother’s womb, she was free of original sin. I then explained that that is what the meaning is of the words on the miraculous medal seen in a vision by Catherine Laboure.

She insisted she was right and I was wrong. I finally told her to ask her priest. She called a few days later to apologize, that I was right.

HOW can so many Catholics be so ignorant of not only the faiths of others, but esp. their own?

I realize not everyone can be a religious scholar, but I thought the Catholic church had catechism classes, parochial schools, etc

My own mother was a convert to Orthodox Judaism from Catholicism, and she had attended Catholic school as a child as well. Yet she misled me for many years, telling me that Catholics do not believe Jesus is god, but SON of God. I didn’t learn what Catholics actually believed on that until I was a teenager, and began studying all religions (I went on to get a degree in comparative religion as well.)

Yes, it is true that many catholics are ignorant of their faith and others, like others who also are ignorant ot theirs and the catholicism. First of all you are lucky to have the desire to know more of other religions and yours but no two people are alike. I was also ignorant for the past 40 years of my life until the 9/11 strucked. I became more aware of my faith comparing with others especially those who demonstrated faith that would give their lives to a cause, however, unfortunate killing innocent people. For Catholics, the faith is very difficult to understand completely and when you were younger, you rely mostly on teachings of catechism in school which means that your understanding was limited. Growing up to adulthood gives you a chance to acquire more wisdom which also gives you the chance to know more of your faith. I came to understand that my faith as a catholic is important for me to follow because of what I have rediscovered for the past 9 years of my life. I do not to argue with you against what you believe but you can hang around in the CF for enligthenment. Regarding those who might have offended or debated against yours please bear in mind again that no two people are alike. You have as you said became a knowledgeable person on faith of others and yours, so I wish you will find peace on what you are looking for. It is your free will that gave you the freedom to know but for catholics like me, I already found the truth. Peace.

Exactly once you are Catholic you have no need to search, if you were never Catholic and became Catholic and they will tell you they found the truth. If you were born Catholic like i was there is never a need to search, for what. There is nothing ouside in the Catholic Faith that we need, We know the one True God, Jesus Christ. that is why if you really understand the faith you never leave, you will keep growing and learning in Christ everyday. you have no need or no where to Go. The Church is our home. Contentment from the beginning.

Because Catholics KNOW their religion IS from Christ, period. Anything else is an off-shoot from it. We know Christ started the Catholic church and it is frustrating to see others who don’t “get it”. And your mother wasn’t quite clear in the Catholic faith to say we don’t believe Jesus IS God. Of course we do, we’ve been trying to tell others this for centuries.

Today was a beautiful day, God gave my husband and i a wonderful day on the bike. First one since oct. I am relaxed and happy but GAME ON. What you are saying is you dont believe that Jesus is God. Period. Now i am saying according to the Roman Catholic Religion you are DEAD WRONG. PERIOD. You can dance around it all you want thats what you said. You said Jesus Christ is not God. i may not know everything in this world only what God wants to reveal, I said that, but now i know one thing. You can dance all you want you Reject Jesus Christ as God. Case closed. You just dont have the guts to say point blank you reject Jesus Christ as God. It hurts to see you scream at someone who is not Catholic but truly loves her Jewish faith. God knows where her heart is.
I trust in God and He takes care of those who have Him in their hearts.

Thank you Bud, its just i am so tired of people attacking Jesus and our Church, Maybe im getting too defensive at times, but sometimes i feel its me the Pope and Jesus against the world. And if i dont stick up for Jesus i feel like they are crucifiying him all over again. I just dont know what more he can do. He gave everything for us. his own life. And i know i need to find a better way with my words sometimes, but i cant always find them. But hey, pray for me, and sometimes i do real good. God Bless. I guess today was just a bad day.

Dear rinnie, My wife returned to our Catholic faith 10 years before I did in '05. When I returned I was so fired up with love for God because of what He gave us in Catholicism I just had no way of containing my passion for the truth.
My Protestant friends thought I had become unstable. When I would speak to them about our faith and they would try to get a word in I would just get angry because they did not see what I was being shown by God.
My wife told me I was too intense and at times angry. Fortunately, I developed listened to her and developed a filter that works most of the time.
God created women to bring love into the world as is evidenced by Mary. We men do a lot better when we learn to love from them. As a woman you teach me by your suffering what kind of dispostion I am projecting.
