We rightly focus most of the time on the unbelievably atrocious suffering that Christ underwent to save us, but its whole purpose was our redemption, not the futility of suffering for its own sake. Our faith should be a faith of joy. If it is not a joyful faith to you, then you, not Vatican II, are at fault.
The Protestants make the paramount point with their Resifix that Christ has already won the battle over the force of darkness for us. Of course, it doesn’t mean, as at least one of their more deluded denominations would have it, that we are saved, period.
Nor does it mean that the Mass is to be observed in a spirit of levity and jubilation.
But, at least, let us focus equally on the ‘bottom line’, namely, that Christ’s historical, personal sufferings lead us to life in its fulness, not to death.
