Why are Catholics so immoral?

Who goes around asking friends and acquaintances if they have premarital sex? Seems weird to me. 😃

Catholics, however, don’t seem to as often. I actually spoke with a few who were heavily involved in their church. I asked, “Why do so many Catholics have premarital sex?” .

On a side note, I have also noticed that many Catholics don’t even know anything about the Bible or their religion. While almost every Protestant I meet knows a lot about the Bible. Kind of weird. l.
So you talked with some Catholics who aren’t really practicing Catholics, despite what they might say, and there are well over a billion Catholics. Hardly enough to qualify as a scientific poll don’t you think? Almost every Protestant you meet knows their Bible. This suggests you run with a bunch of faithful Protestants. Good for you.

The Catholics, I know are just the opposite from the ones you know, and the Protestants I know don’t go to Church for the most part. There are some I know who are very strong Christians. There are many Protestants.

To answer your question, “Why are so many Catholics immoral” is an uninformed, biased question. Just like it would be if I raised the same question about your choices.

We use the front door to the liquor store also, rather then the rear door. 👍
🙂 Got the joke. 🙂

Also, one time I was lost in a fairly small town, but couldn’t find the church. I pulled into the nearest business parking lot at the edge of town and asked the two people putting something in their trunk. It was a liquor store, and they sure did know where the Catholic Church was. 🙂

(They lived just a couple blocks away; no, they weren’t Catholic, but still…now y’all know how to find the nearest parish; start with the nearest liquor store. 🙂 )

Some people go around and offer up that information to anyone who will listen. I know far more than I care to about my friends’ and peers’ premarital sex lives.

As for the stated topic, I wouldn’t rely so heavily on anecdotal evidence. The two heaviest drinking, coke snorting, dirtiest dancing, most promiscuous girls I knew in college came from strict Baptist families. And of my friends and peers who have offered up their sexual histories, I don’t know of a single Protestant who waited for marriage (unfortunately, I’m the only Catholic I know who did). So at least in my sphere, Catholics at least have a slight edge.

Just sticking with Catholics, particularly those brought up in the 70s and 80s, I believe one big reason why so many engage in premarital sex has to do with poor catechesis. I’m not saying we were taught to ignore the sixth commandment; I’m saying that Catholic education during that time was extremely liberal and often not kosher. The main thing just about everyone in my grade school took away from our sex ed (taught by our priest, no less) was that as long as you didn’t engage in vaginal intercourse, your were still a virgin. And except for sodomy, everything else–and I mean everything else–was given a verbal, explicit and graphic green light (and one teacher in high school even gave a yellow light to sodomy; sure, it was a mortal sin but, in her mind, it was an acceptable release for kids since it maintained their virginity and didn’t lead to pregnancy). I’ve talked to some of my peers about why they decided not to wait and most of them told me they decided that it was illogical to put off sex until marriage since they were already doing everything else. Since priests and Catholic school teachers had condoned all those other acts, they couldn’t see how sex could actually be a sin.

We tend to be very attractive physically, so more people want to have sex with us. We’re still resisting temptations at a much higher rate than everyone else

I believe that many Catholics here in the Northeast engage in premarital sex and contraception etc., however, I do not think of it as solely a Catholic problem. It is a contemporary societal trend across the board concerning all people and generations including Protestants. It is the “new normal”, unfortunately. As a culture we have dismissed the notion that you need to have self control until marriage. Most people seem to have forgotten that not engaging in premarital sex is for our own good and that premarital sex is a mortal sin which offends God. At least two generations have been very poorly catechized concerning the real Catholic view on sex so this trend will likely continue until the Cardinals decide that they should attack this sin head on.

Thank you, Sailor Kenshin! I used humour cause such a biased question cant be taken seriously. I appreciate all the kind and explanatory ones, though. Im glad to see people have a great understanding of their faith and it encourages me. 🙂

I don’t mind fielding questions like the original post at all because is demonstrates that in general, people do expect a higher standard of moral behaviour from Catholics. People raised with Protestant or secular beliefs aren’t normally bound by theology based prohibitions regarding premarital sex, masturbation and contraception. So when others accuse Catholics of poor behaviour, it doesn’t truly reflect what is being questioned to say “well Protestants are just as bad. Here are the statistics”. To him that much is given, much is expected.

Luke 12:47-48…

“The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows. But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked."

So, I’m Agnostic, but I am a moral person. I even believe in saving sex for marriage, which me and my wife have done. I have noticed that many Protestants also do this. Obviously not all, but quite a lot. Catholics, however, don’t seem to as often. I actually spoke with a few who were heavily involved in their church. I asked, “Why do so many Catholics have premarital sex?” And I always got the same answer. “Well”, they said, “sexual sin is some of the hardest to overcome, and that’s why so many people fall victim to it”. I never got a straight answer to my question.

On a side note, I have also noticed that many Catholics don’t even know anything about the Bible or their religion. While almost every Protestant I meet knows a lot about the Bible. Kind of weird. Oh, and FYI, I’m not trying to generalize. Obviously not EVERY Catholic is immoral or has premarital sex, it just seems like a lot do, at least compared to Protestants. Also, I’m not trying to say that people who save it for marriage are above anyone else. Even though I saved it, I have done other stuff that was really wrong. I used to be a thief. Even now I struggle with the temptation to steal.
How many Catholics do you know?

What per cent are they out of one billion of the world’s Catholics?

Do you mean all one billion of us are immoral?

It still puzzles me on how you know a few Catholics and yet proclaim with such authority that we are all immoral.

I know a lot of agnostics as I work with them, most are self-centered, rude, and almost hateful to others who have faith. Does that mean that every one of them are that way? Of course not. There are exceptions for everything. From your observations / views, I bet that you are very young – most likely in low 20s. As you get older you will learn that everyone has faults and everyone sins, but it is with trust in God that helps us all over come and resist sin. Being young – I also think a lot of those that you know are also young, as such more acceptable to instant gratification, be it having premarital sex, not learning about the teachings of Jesus, or even continuing to go to Church. Again there are those (more than those that do not) that refrain from premarital sex, study the Bible, and faithfully go to Church.

Being young does not always mean that: you know everything, are indestructible, or that you are able to judge who is a sinner and who is not. Not to be rude, but as you get older and gain more life experiences your views on the way others live may change. And you may learn that even though we all sin, it is through Jesus the Christ that we are forgiven and accepted in to His kingdom. And you may even accept Him.

Prays and strength to you.
