Why are Catholics so interested in the LDS faith?

These are some of the churches that CLAIM to Mormons and to practice Mormonism:

The FLDS church (Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints)

The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS)(Independence, Missouri, USA) now renamed to the Community of Christ, under president W. Grant McMurray,

Church of Christ -Temple Lot (Temple Lot, Independence, Missouri)

The Restoration Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Independence, Missouri, USA)

The Church of Christ With the Elijah Message (Blue Springs, Missouri, USA).

The Church of Jesus Christ (based in Pittsburgh, USA).

The Church of the Firstborn of the Fullness of Times (Mexico) now defunct.

The Church of Jesus Christ (Cutlerites) (Independence, Missouri)

The Pentecostal Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (based in Louisiana USA). Rejects the Doctrines and Covenants standard LDS work

The Restored Church of Jesus Christ (Independence, Missouri, USA)

The True and Living Church of Jesus Christ of Saints of the Last Days (Manti, Utah, USA)

The doctrines of these churches vary greatly and most of these churches believe that all the other “Mormon” churches are heretics. None of the teachings of these churches should in any way be considered as doctrine of the LDS church.

**We were not discussing the many other churchs that follow the Mormon doctrine, we were debating LDS is Mormonism which BJ has no clue to this fact.

Can you name me the many other church’s that follow Mormonism??

How about naming just one besides LDS which is the Mormon Church.**

Sara

**No matter which way you slice it LDS Is LDS and Mormonism is Mormonism. Bottom line.

Your list above is LDS, they are not different churches or sects of denominations that follow Mormonism.**

I just named you a ton of churches that all CLAIM to teach Mormonism. They all claim to be THE Mormon church as well. When you use the term “Mormonism” please remember that means different things to different people. What the LDS church teaches as “mormonism” is different than what these other churches teach as “Mormonism”. Hopefully that will help clear things up a bit.

**Mabey what you are trying to convey is that not all Mormons committ or profess to polgamy, etc, etc, just as some Catholics and protestants do not attend church, as hypothetical scenerio’.

However the fact remains, the list you have above are LDS and do follow the book of Mormon.

Semantics.!**

Well THEY all think they are.

Perhaps you could define “Mormonism” so we could get to the heart of the matter.

Semantics.!

Many of these groups have completely different scriptures than the LDS. They all profess different doctrines. This is more like Lutheran Church, Lutheran Church Missouri Synod in their relationship to the Catholic Church.

Mormons do not spread falsehood about the Catholic Church, or about any other religion. If you that is the case, why don’t you give us some examples.
OK, I’ll bite. How about this, in addition to all the other evidence already presented.

Here are two BYU professors discussing Mormon fascination with the Da Vinci code from newsnet.byu.edu/story.cfm/52277 :

*BYU professors have developed their own theories as to why Mormon culture remains so captivated by “The Da Vinci Code.”

Richard Holzapfel, a professor of church history and world civilization at BYU, said although the book has sold especially well in Utah, it is of particular interest to the Latter-day Saint population in general.

“It’s not just a Utah phenomenon, it’s a Mormon phenomenon,” Holzapfel said.

Holzapfel said there are three primary facets of the novel that members of the church find appealing: its anti-Catholic theme, its discussion of ancient, hidden or suppressed texts and its proposal of an intimate relationship between Jesus of Nazareth and Mary Magdalene.

"There is a tinge of anti-Catholicism within the modern Mormon society," Holzapfel said. "Not officially in the church, but among the members, who like other North American protestants, have always been suspicious of Catholic intentions, practices and papal influence."
Eric Huntsman, a professor of ancient scripture at BYU, partially agreed with Holzapfel.

There may still be individuals in the church who might see the Catholic church as the source of all evils when really it’s the victim," Huntsman said. "It’s an early product of the apostasy, it’s not the cause of the apostasy.”*

I would disagree, btw, that the Mormon church is not officially anti-Catholic…I men, ‘great apostasy’?

I’m not trying to sow discord or paranoia --the Mormons I know are friendly enough, though they know I’m Catholic. But, you asked for examples.

You forgot the newest Mormon splinter-group:

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Sola Scriptura (CoJCoLDSSS), headquartered in cyberspace and under the direction of the First Presidency (Casen, Kathryn and Amgid).

They reject all Mormon teachings that are not spelled out in the 4 Standard Works of Mormonism.

The new sect will hold its first General Conference at Starbucks in Salt Lake City, Utah. Coffee will be featured on the menu since, according to a Church spokeman “the word of wisdom was sent by way of greeting; not by commandment or constraint, yippee!”. Though later prophets made obedience to the word of wisdom into an absolute requirement, these Sola Scriptura Saints are not bound by that decree.

I thought Kathryn was amgids mom.

**Whats the difference anyway, I am Catholic and proud to be a member of the first church, the rest of the denominations are just off-springs of the Catholic Church. If only one Catholic remained on earth, he would be the Universal Church.

I am not mocking your sect, I was debating with BJ who had no idea that LDS was Mormonism.

I am happy I have the true and right light. I have faith and try to follow Gods commandments and Laws. I repent, I go to mass and partake in the body and blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ because I love him. This debate is getting ugly, I must humble myself at this point.

Okay… just for the record, I am also Catholic and I also am very happy that through the eucharist I, an unworthy sinner, can join in communion with the God. I think BJ knows that the LDS church is “Mormon” and teaches “Mormonism”. We just sometimes disagree on what the definition of Mormonism is. Semantics? yes but but still necessary. Now…shall we all kiss and make up and agree to play nice together?

Peace be with you.

****Of course,

A O K, … no hard feelings.

Sara**

And Peace be with You also.!**

there is also that group in Arizona I think it was that was forcing 13 year olds (and other young aged girls) to marry 40 year old men (to complete the many wives thing). They had a story on 20/20 or Primetime Live and were talking to a woman that used to live there…she helped to rescue two of the girls so they could be well, KIDS.

Now that is a cult…forcing 13 year olds to marry men 2 or 3 times their age? shudders

I think you’re referring to the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I think the leader of that group is on the run in Florida. haha.

But they’re not members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They are another Mormon spin-off group with their own “prophets” and “revelations” (most of which say “give the leaders more girls and more money!”). These groups are a terrible embarassment to the “Salt Lake City” Mormons.

Katzpur:
Are you talking about “Mormons” or members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? If a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is found to be practicing polygamy, he or she is excommunicated. Now I don’t know what you would call an excommunicated Catholic. But I don’t call an excommunicated Latter-day Saint a “Latter-day Saint.” Nor do I call Lutheranism a “sect of Catholicism.” These fringe groups are no more a part of the “LDS Church” than the various Protestant denominations are part of the Catholic Church.
Kathryn,

I - and I think that any Catholic would call an excommunicated Catholic, not to put too fine a point on it, an “excommunicated Catholic” - and I believe that most Catholics would agree that Lutherans and other various protestant sects that have roots in the ‘reformation’ are, indeed, very much “sects of Catholicism”.

And as to plural marriage - as I read the D&C the commandment of plural marriage is still in full effect and declaration #1 does not contain any revelation repudiating the doctrine itself only a letter that plural marriages are no longer (with one exception) were found to have been practiced in Utah at the time the letter was written, and that it is more expedient for the LDS to conform to the laws of government, so that life could continue (for the most part - excepting plural marriage temporarily) as usual for LDS members. I’ve read of the Manifesto but never seen it actually published (unlike other ‘revelations’ in the D&C),

As a Supreme Court Justice (O’Connor?) said - if the constitutionality of polygamy or polyandry were to come before the Court today it would like held to be legal as a legal practice. While this would justify the actions of those who you say are no longer LDS (but who claim to be ‘more’ LDS than those who have repudiated D&C 132) be able to come into communion with the LDS church once again? Would a new Manifesto be revealed allowing plural marriage once again? Or would LDS leaders, who have worked so hard to make the LDS church a mainstream religion remain bound by an updated revealed Manifesto that superseded - for time, at least - the truth of the revelation of D&C 132?
