Why are Fundamentalist Christians afraid of a Unified Christianity with Vatican? This doesn’t make any sense to me since Jesus Christ prayed to God the Father for Christian unity. Wouldn’t you be going against God’s will?

That is not a sufficient definition. Fundalmentalist Christian are often catagorized as
refers to a belief in, and strict adherence to a set of basic principles (often religious in nature), sometimes as a reaction to perceived doctrinal compromises with modern social and political life.[1][2][3][4]
Thus if you look at the last bolded section you find that the nature of the movement is a reaction in and of itself. American fundalmentalism can have attributed to it these principled beliefs.
The inspiration of the Bible by the Holy Spirit and the inerrancy of Scripture as a result of this.
The virgin birth of Christ.
The belief that Christ’s death was the atonement for sin.
The bodily resurrection of Christ.
The historical reality of Christ’s miracles.
If there is a perceived departure from any of these tennants or how they define an aspect of these principles (such as inerrancy of scripture) they cannot by their nature unify with the Catholic Church. Often american fundalmentalist hold to a literalist interpretation of scripture. If this is a principle fo their fundalmental beliefs and the RCC teaches something not alligning with this point of view they cannot unify. I don’t think its so much fear as an inability based on thier views.

What is your definition of “fundamentalist?”
Fundamentalist, also known as Christian fundamentalism or fundamentalist evangelicalism, is a movement that arose mainly within British and American Protestantism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries among conservative evangelical Christians, who, in a reaction to liberal theology, actively affirmed a fundamental set of Christian beliefs: the inerrancy of the Bible, Sola Scriptura, the virgin birth of Christ, the doctrine of substitutionary atonement, the bodily resurrection of Jesus, and the imminent personal return of Jesus Christ. Some who hold these beliefs reject the label of “fundamentalism”, seeing it as a pejorative term for historic Christian doctrine, while to others it has become a banner of pride. Such Christians prefer to use the term fundamental as opposed to fundamentalist (i.e. Independent Fundamental Baptist, Independent Fundamental Baptist Association of Michigan, and Independent Fundamental Churches of America).

Back to the topic. Why are Fundamentalist Evangelical Protestant Christians so afraid about the Vatican effort for Christianity unity? There have been works to united Eastern Orthodox and Catholicism which will probably take a while to happen. When it does happen, I know some of Christian Fundamentalists will view it as an establishment of a One World Religion…

So why are you (those who held this belief / if you are not one of them, this does not concern you) so afraid of Christian unity when Jesus Christ prayed to God the Father for Christian unity? That they will all be one.

Manny,

I don’t believe there are too many Christians of the fundamentalist persuasion on these forums. They don’t seem to get along well here 😃

It is a pity though because I would very much like to understand their position. My father in law is one of such that fears everything you have described.

God bless

They will answer if they want to prove their claim. They are after all brain washed by the Dispensationalist doctrine of John Darby and influence by the Left Behind Series…that depicted the Catholic Church as the Whore of Babylon and the Pope as the “Anti-Christ.”

Now we’re getting somewhere. So “fundamentalist” means:

1- 5 Fundamentals posted earlier.
2- Dispensationalism
3- Overly separatist views.

I meet 1, but not 2 & 3. My problem with a unification under Rome is not because of some goofy Rapture theory, but because it would violate local church autonomy. For me to accept unification, it would have to be done in a way that respects congregational church polity and local church autonomy.

The Orthodox, likewise, have a different ecclesiology from Latin Catholics.

The Roman system has compromised with the world system. Why would we want to be yoked with compromise.

What is the difference? We believe in the resurrection of the dead, and that Jesus will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Woah, I knew we have a dispensationist…

Anyways, what do you mean compromised? Give me one example of this compromise. I see the world as being Anti-Catholic…because its opposition to contraception and homosexuality…as well as other immoral behavior that the Catholic Church condemned.

You know of all the compromises but you rationalize, intellectualize and justify each and every one.

A few examples:

statues
embracing world times and seasons not Gods
lording over them like the gentiles

But, what do statues have to do with the modern world? Pictures make more sense. Statues remind us of the citizens of heaven. I prefer icons, pictures and images, myself.

The Church believes in three seasons: Advent, Paschal, Ordinary time. All God-centered.

Lording over who? The Church is our parent. It’s authority comes from God. It’s purpose is to bring God’s Kingdom to earth and to assist and usher us to it. Keeping us on the “straight and narrow”. If God’s Law doesn’t appeal to us, that’s our problem. Obedience to rightful authority was practiced by Jesus and to be imitated by us, if we are to abide in Christ. He even said so.

Your view of the Church comes from the media. When the media portrays your churches, it’s wrong. When it portrays the Church, suddenly they are 100% accurate.

You should at least investigate your prejudices.

RATIONALIZATION

The Church believes in three seasons: Advent, Paschal, Ordinary time. All God-centered.

All based on a pagan calender.

JUSTIFYING

Your view of the Church comes from the media. When the media portrays your churches, it’s wrong. When it portrays the Church, suddenly they are 100% accurate.

My view comes from scripture.

You should at least investigate your prejudices.

Manny,

I don’t think that fundamentalists (of which I am not one) are necessarily afraid – they simply disagree with parts of Catholic doctrine and with Catholic ecclesiology. Your question implies something that, in all likelihood, is not the situation. Disagreement and fear are not synonymous.

Hisalone:
Well we now use the Gregorian calendar. Surely you can’t call it Pagan…
The Julian calendar may have been created by Pagans (Julius Caesar, no less) it was used in the times of Christ and the early Church. What else were they supposed to use? That is what governed their lives.

For someone who calls themselves a Christian, you are arrogant and argumentative. Pagans were arrogant and argumentative, too. Perhaps I should judge you based on this logic, too.

You didn’t say anything about your prejudices, I’ve noticed. I think you talk a big talk, but you don’t walk the path of Christ. Not on this forum, anyway.

Even the Jewish calendar is a lunisolar one.

What else is a calendar but a way to reckon the length and divisions of the year? How can a calendar not be based on the apparent cycles of the moon, sun and stars?
