Why are items blessed?

My pastor is coming over for dinner and asked if we have had our house blessed (not to my knowledge since everyone else who’s ever lived here was Jewish). What does this entail? Will the priest go to every room, just the public/main rooms? just the first floor?

Why are rings, animals, houses, pictures,cars, etc. blessed? Are these items and animals now sacred? What does the blessing actually do?

Can I throw away an item that has been blessed, but for which I no longer have any use?
