Why are Mormons not considered Christians by the Catholic Church?

My husband, a lifelong Mormon, considers himself a validly baptized Christian; we’ve been married 42+ years, and he is considering joining the Church. He is troubled by the fact that the Church does not recognize the LDS church as truly Christian. Please help me explain why the Catholic Church takes this position regarding Mormon beliefs. Thank you.
