I,am, a person devote to the LOVE of GOD, JESUS,& Mary, but I can,t understand
why people, worry more about matreial things ,drugs, haveing sex,and killing of others,
What happen to people praying together as a family, going too church, together,as a family.
weren,t we ask by OUR LADY to say the ROSARY daily for the SOUL,S in Pergatory, and for Peace in the world, Way are we worry about standing in line for the new,s Item out,or
wait in line for a ticket too the play off, but we can,t fill a church ,like we you,s too.Dosen,t
man worry about his soul any more. I guess not,buy the way people are acting. It seem that people only pray when they need favors from GOD, But when are time comes and we are dying, than we call apound the LORD,save me LORD for I don,t want too die yet.
We should also know, that Jesus knows us, and when we come before him, there be no time to say were sorry, than we are going to be JUDGE.
GOD BLESS :)

Our Lord rhetorically asked if any of us think He will find faith on Earth when He returns. It is quite obvious that God was pointing us to examine ourselves. The problem with our modern day is that the Enlightenment skeptics have taken the cake for themselves, and only cut off tiny slivers for everyone else. Everyone from Hobbes to Voltaire made religious faith look ridiculous. Their attitude was quite popular by 1789 and, since we live in the shadow of the French Revolution, it is popular today.

People were falling away from many churches at record numbers between 1840 and 1900. Atheism was rampantly on the rise in those days. It gradually reached a point at which belief itself was ridiculed. When you reduce belief in God to mere “your god” and “their god” and “his god” and “her god” nonsense, as rationalists do, it does become a pointless joke. Perhaps we are feeling the full effect of the marginalisation of religion only now?

The fact is that real logic, sensibility, and good will have died in the world of philosophy. Modern philosophy which is consumed by the majority tends to de-emphasise logic. They say we can’t really know anything because life is absurd. This applies to all faith, for them… “the humanists”, heh. 😛

People have become addicted to the lust, drugs, and violence in entertainment media, but don’t want to acknowledge it. The Media is trying to become the new Church, and they know that one cannot worship 2 masters (Matthew 6: 24-34). The Progressives have successfully sold us into a Regression to the basic instincts under the disguise of progress. Once their shallow amusements wear off, they know the people will lust for more, like sheep to the slaughter. The media puppetmasters are getting their way in a free and democratic nation, but few see this, so most are begging for more of the very things that are poisoning them, thinking that it will save them. People crave Intensity, but the culture is feeding them the wrong Intensity. It’s the ultimate Deception. The Intensity that people seek can’t be found in pop culture’s shallow amusements that don’t last.

The Gospels record that many left the company of Jesus Himself because His teachings were too hard for them. Imagine seeing Jesus to His face and yet walking away from Him.

It is nothing new.

The Jews fell back to idol worship after God freed them from Egypt.

Things are no worse today than they were in ancient times.

From what I can tell, and what I have experienced, peopel are falling away more because they do not understand or appreciate original sin.

TO know how we stand before GOd is a blessing: TO deny it or make it more flowery than it truly is , is the root of all our failings. No man would have any confidence in himself if he understood how pitiful he was. They need to see themselves from the inside out, so they can feel the NEED…the Need for a redeemer, the need for TRUTH.

Each generation of Catholics has had it’s own issues. The issues cumulatively get passed on to the next generations. Many of my generation (I’m 43) were allowed by our parents to walk away from the Church. Our parents were told not to pressure us. I am not sure by who. Today, many of my generation “cannot see the value” in going to church. They still send their kids to CCD (I am an Asst DRE) but never take them to Mass. It is almost like they ‘put’ their kids through the sacraments because they have to do it. They freely use any excuse (priest scandal, et all) to not attend.

People are falling away because they now believe that the meaning of life is to do what they want, always; to follow every impulse; and, above all, to do things that make them feel good without looking at consequences or implications. And religion does not allow them to do that, because in order to practice a religion, you must control yourself. According to modern society, controlling yourself is evil and damaging.

While many people have fallen away from the Church remember our Church will last forever. We may go through periods of trial and suffering but our Church will endure. Christ will win in the end.

People are falling away because sin is accepted and ingrained in our culture. Divorce is expected. Sex is recreational pleasure. In too many circles abortion is embraced.

More than that there has been a loss of belief in the real presence in the liturgy, few people go to confession but yet receive communion weekly and while many priests tell it like it is maybe some more priests could address the matter of sin and talk more about confession.

Sin has ALWAYS been ingrained in human culture; that is why it is called original sin. People are no different now than they were 10, 100 or 1000 years ago.

I hear this scapegoat too often. The Hebrews who left Egypt did not have a plentitude of history that taught and warned them to take sin seriously and combat it openly lest they revert back to that degrading slavery of debauchery and stupidity that we, today, now face.

Exactly because it happened before means we ought to deal with it more vigorously today, for we know what the ultimate consequences of it are, and how bad it can get, and worse.

Pax Christi,
Tim

The point of my post is to illustrate that even in Jesus’ time there were those who chose to go the other way, just as there are those who do the same today. This chicken-little attitude that we now live in the most corrupt time of the ages is simply mistaken. There has been more vice and corruption in the Church 1000+ years ago than anything that has been seen in the last 400.

We are deluged with the secular world and their values. Religion is scoffed at, if one has a strong upbringing in faith at home, it is still difficult to not be seduced by what the world says is important.

Jesus didn’t tell his disciples to worry about “why are people falling away” but to evangelize them to the gospel.

I wonder, too, as the world population expands, how all these people can be saved? What is God going to do about it?

Well, he sent us!

On a personal level, if you are asking for advice, read the Bible, study the Bible (with commentaries), pray, pray for yourself and for others.

You’re right. The world wants to “suck out our brains” and fill our heads with its values and standards. The pressures are enormous. But, the first step is to realize that these are “just” pressures or “temptations” and you know how to deal with them.

The family should be the basic unit of the Church, but we know that it is not, so often.

I think it’s a problem right within the Church, on several levels. I attended Catholic schools for 12 years (1956 to 1967) and I don’t recall distinct teaching on how to live in a family or to raise a family. Surely, I don’t remember details, but I was left with the impression that they were trying to instill in us their celibate, monastic life style, instead of dealing with real-world issues of the time (like the Viet Nam War) or with contraception or homosexuality (which wasn’t even discussed in those days).

The schools, of course, don’t bear all the responsibility, because the family is supposed to teach a lot of basic values and behavior, which they so often do not.

To answer the question, why are people falling away – a lot of reasons. Basically, they don’t know who God is. If you knew and apreciated who you were dealing with, you wouldn’t fall away.

I think the nuns who taught me probably though the best thing was to teach kids to be on their knees and saying the rosary 24 hours a day. Life isn’t like that. That education wasn’t practical enough. Agree?

You can’t just run a Catholic school by having kids say nothing, ask nothing, do nothing and then expect them to SAYsomething and DOsomething after they graduate. They enforced such passivity in te schools, to make discipline easy on themselves.

In my high school, some students went on a drinking binge at a high school football game, which basically was like the Israelites worshipping the golden calf at the foot of Sinai. Moses got mad at the people. The nuns got mad at the kids, for sure.

Yes sin is sin and people who sin are no different now than in the past. The problem is that the number of sinners has grown exponentially. We have lots of people living in grave sin and not going to confession, way more than we once had. At some point I believe we may face chastisement from God because our whole society has fallen off the wagon.

From the liberalization of culture in the 1960s social norms have changed thus causing sin among greater numbers of people. More people divorce today then ever before. The family unit has been redefined to include same sex “parents.” Sins of purity are much more pronounced than ever before. Look at Hugh Hefner and his trashy magazine. He was the pioneer of smut and he came to be somewhere in the late 50s or early 60s. Most despicable of all is that our country legalized abortion in 1974 and every year how many baby’s are “legally” slaughtered?

Finally, as in we close the circle and go back to the topic at hand statistics show that the number or practicing Catholics has declined substantially since the 1960s.

How do you know this? Is there any empirical evidence that you can provide to show that this is true? How do you know what the rate of sin of the average, ignorant, unintelligent peasant of the Middle Ages was? What makes you think that people of yesteryear were any more valiant than what we see today? The past 1,000 years of history have shown us that the majority of Christian kings and rulers were horrible, horrible people. Soldiers raped, pillaged and murdered depending on who was paying their salary. Kings and princes had mistresses, stole from other wealthy royals and made war to take what belonged to others. Have you ever read of the atrocities of Spanish conquistadors in the New World? Do you think that what we consider “crime” today (theft, rape, murder) was any less prevalent than in the past?

Pornography has been around since the days of ancient Egypt. The Egyptians, Greeks and Romans were obsessed with sex. Museums do not display them but there are a wealth of artifacts from these cultures that are completely sexual in nature, some of it quite shocking to even the modern mind. Simply Google “pompei pan and goat.”

It is an ignorant notion to think that the world has only become “depraved” since the 1960s.

While the world and people have always been sinful, our culture and technology have change. In the past, when religion, faith and morals worked side-by-side with the government and rulers, sin could be punished by the authorities. And while I would never want to bring it back, there is a reason. Also, following God (or gods) was so ingrained in their life, that disobeying was truly horrible.
Now our culture, secular and free, does not place importance on faith and morals. It places it on freedom, choice, and pleasure.

Unlike the past, our technology aids our sinful natures. Porn in just a few clicks away, and gossip can spread in less than a minute over a phone. It has become easier to sin and easier to hide said sin.

And there is something else. Not everyone is meant to find devotion to Our Lord or Lady pleasurable and preferable to the world. We cannot all be St. Thereses. Some will have to struggle against the world and love God all the more for it if and when they choose to follow and love Him.

In Christ,
Nevermore

I am convinced that there has been a great falling away since the 1950s. Just in my extended family (including second and third cousins) where just about everyone went to church, now only myself and my father’s cousin go to church. Nearly all Catholics I meet don’t practise their faith anymore. There is a huge generation of non believers now whose parents came from strong Catholic families. The Protestant churches have had an even more spectacular falling away. But as a kid in the 1950s and 1960s everyone seemed to belong to a church.

I’ve always been interested in ‘the end times’ ever since the nuns used to prepare us for the great persecution that they were convinced would some day come.

When I think of the end times I think of, II Thes 2:3:

“Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first…” (KJV)

This refers to the day of Christ’s return. "Falling away’ is also translated as “departure” in some translantions. I suppose that’s why Christ wondered about the time He was to return to earth again if there would be any faith left on earth (see Luke 18:8).

Or it could be that after some few thousand years people are taking a look at the entire spectrum of work and said: “I’m not so sure this is working.” Not my own point of view, but one I can see.

It’s not that CATHOLICISM is not working, it’s that Catholics basically have no apprehension of their faith and obligations and are spiritual sitting ducks. Worked fine for 1,517 years. Continues to work. 🙂 🤷
