Admitedly, there are always exceptions, and we can never see into people´s souls to know exactly what state of sin they are in. But, come on, it´s very obvious that something substantial has changed in society, at least in Western society. How do you know what the rate of sin of the average, ignorant, unintelligent peasant of the Middle Ages was? What makes you think that people of yesteryear were any more valiant than what we see today?
I think the key is that, although before there were many who lived in sin and humanity has not changed essentially since the Fall, what HAS changed dramatically is the social fabric of the West. What used to be abhored by good society and considered a shameful thing, is now absolutely normal. Take fornication, for example. Here in Spain, if an unmarried girl was known to have spent a night away from home that would practically be the end of her hopes to marry. Nowadays 15-year-old girls openly sleep with their boyfriends IN THEIR PARENTS´HOUSE, and it´s generally accepted as morally neutral. Or take homosexuality. Before everyone knows there were active homosexuals, but they had to hide it, as it was considered disgraceful. Now it´s something to be “proud” of!! I think the revolutionary change is not so much the PEOPLE (we´re all just as weak and sinful as ever), but the laws and customs of the West.
Yes. If you look at crime figures, I don´t see how you can avoid any such conclusions. Of course, if you´re talking about the Middle Ages, there are no figures to compare, but I think the OP was referring more to the recent past, ie. since the 60´s. And BTW, the “atrocities” of the conquistadores is another of the masonic black legends. Sure, they did some pretty bad things, but absolutely nothing in comparison to the protestant genocide of the North-American indians. The past 1,000 years of history have shown us that the majority of Christian kings and rulers were horrible, horrible people. Soldiers raped, pillaged and murdered depending on who was paying their salary. Kings and princes had mistresses, stole from other wealthy royals and made war to take what belonged to others. Have you ever read of the atrocities of Spanish conquistadors in the New World? Do you think that what we consider “crime” today (theft, rape, murder) was any less prevalent in the past?
Again, you´re going too far back. I agree with you that our times ressemble Ancient times in many ways. We are now neo-pagan nations, harping back to “the good old days”, before christianity. Abortion is in fact a return to Roman law, when all children were considered literally “possessions” of the father. The degradation of sexual morality is very reminiscent of latter Roman times.Pornography has been around since the days of ancient Egypt. The Egyptians, Greeks and Romans were obsessed with sex. Museums do not display them but there are a wealth of artifacts from these cultures that are completely sexual in nature, some of it quite shocking to even the modern mind. Simply Google “pompei pan and goat.”
I don´t agree at all. But we should define terms. Are you referring to the entire world, Western society, or just USA? If it´s the latter two, I think the idea that we have become “depraved” since the 1960´s is correct. Perhaps that´s putting it mildly! How else do you explain 50 million abortions since 1974, all the children born out of wedlock, divorces, fornication, a porn-saturated and blasphemous Media? It seems pretty obvious to me.It is an ignorant notion to think that the world has only become “depraved” since the 1960s.
