I was born and raised Roman Catholic, and the first time I ever encountered the bow during the Creed was a recent visit to a Western Rite Orthodox Divine Liturgy in the Rite of Pope St. Gregory the Great. The bow was never ever a part of my Roman Catholic heritage growing up, in any of the churches I attended; and I was a senior altar server by the time I departed my native parish during middle school. I honestly did not have any knowledge of this practice until three weeks ago when I attended a Western Rite Orthodox church and the liturgy book noted the bow, and everyone bowed, so I did too. It’s a beautiful and reverent, pious practice, so why isn’t it more widely taught and practiced in Roman Catholic parishes? I promise I’m not trying to spark any arguments or make any kind of “point” as I’m an Orthodox Christian, I just wish this particular little gesture was more widely known and practiced in the churches of my bretheren Catholics.
