That’s a very unfair thing to say, an unfair generalization. :mad:
I know that you all are probably sick of noncatholics coming here and belittling and screaming and ‘proving’ and ‘converting’ and ‘correcting’ and ‘saving’ you all. I, for one, came here to do none of that, but to go straight to the horse’s mouth, so to spea,k and find out about Catholicsm for myself from real Catholics rather than have people that have no idea what they’re talking about try to tell me what Catholics believe. I came here because of what I knew from Protestant demonations that Catholics supposedly believed, and have had quite a few misconceptions cleared up quite nicely by coming here and asking simple, sincere questions. I’m very much interested in the Catholic Church right now for some reason. Maybe the interest will fade, maybe not. But I’m here to feed this interest and learn. Never once have I belittled anyone or their beliefs. Yes, I know there are Protestants who have,but not every one of them/us.

Curious, you think it is unfair for me to ask a question on this forum such as,“Why are Protestants here?” I can accept that. Truthfully it seems odd that a Protestant would actually seek out a Catholic Site, why? Birds of a feather stick to gether. Last summer I was on a Protestant site for a few weeks and then for unknown reasons I was BANNED. But Catholic money pays for this site, and so Many Protes ants come here. I approve if they are asking qs. about Catholics. But I dont like to be preached to. Curious if you ask me a qs. about Catholocism I will do my best to answer and If I dont know I will say so. Stop and think, put yourself in my shoes. May I ask an honest question? It was an honest question!

I found Catholic Answers because I am Catholic abd was looking for a Catholic Forum. I have been here 4 to 5 months.

I have noticed a number of Protestants and yes, even atheists are frequent posters. A few of them pose as Catholics for a while, that is until their emotions cause them to reveal themselves.

Is CA the best Catholic/Christian forum? What is the motive of a Protestant to come here and belittle Catholocism? I do not believe that a nonCatholic comes here to gain knowledge, but rather it is the reverse. 😦

Several months ago, I read the story about the young girl in New Jersey whose first communion was invalidated by her bishop. My son has the same metabolic disorder, as well as an intolerance to alcohol, which makes the entire communion impossible for him in the Catholic church. I know that he’s permitted to receive an alternative in our church, so I wanted to know the justification behind this bishop’s objection. None of my Catholic co-workers, neighbors or friends could answer this question, so I came here. For the most part, I’ve found it to be a congenial and knowledgeable group of people, though (perhaps a bit understandably, based on the offensive conduct of some of my fellow Protestants) some are too quick to go on the defensive.
 
It was not the question. It was this statement.

Truthfully, I can’t for the life of me figure out why it’s so difficult for you to comprehend why a Protestant would seek out a Catholic site. Many have already answered this question, boiling it down to three major reasons.
  1. to learn
  2. to bash
  3. to ‘save’ Catholics.
I’m sorry you’ve had such a hard time with Protestants under category 2 and 3. I live in an area where there are very few Catholics, and anti-Catholic things, however subtle, are preached from Protestant pulpits. I know the lies told about Catholicsm, whether well-intentioned or malicious. I’ve had several of my own misconceptions cleared up here and I’m sure other Prots have too. Is it so hard to comprehend that SOME of us MIGHT be here to just learn?

The ‘Surpised by Truth’, which is so highly recommended here, is filled with Protestants that actively sought to learn about Catholicism. I really don’t see what’s so difficult about that.

First of all Welcome Curious. The “Surprised by Truth” books are great. Also, the “Handbook for Today’s Catholic” is the book they handed out at for our RCIA class. Affectionally called “the little Red Book” 😃

In response to why Protestants come here? Well, although I’m still technically a Protestant, in my mind and heart I’m becoming Catholic. When I started on my journey to The Church, I came here. I’d hate to have had folks saying that this place was only for them. Instead I was made welcomed. As for those who come here to bash Catholics, well, that’s what the scroll bar is for, not to mention the folks here who can give it to them, nicely of course. 😃
 
A lot of people here seem upset about the amount of non-Catholics on the board. I personally see it as a blessing and I am sorry to anyone who has been made to feel that they do not belong here. Many of us love the fact that you are here.
  1. If these boards help people find Christianity then that must be one of the greatest achievements of the internet.
  2. Similarly to any Protestants who find they are becoming Catholic, I welcome you with joy.
  3. If anyone finds the real truth about Catholics here and feels their hatered has gone, this is the first step towards breaking down the barriers which so bitterly divide us Christians.
  4. Finally to Catholics who fear for Protestants trying to ‘convert’ us: If you fear it so much that you cannot bear to listen to their views then you must not be very certain about the strength of your own faith.

I JUST learned…the day before I got my books, that a classmate of mine is going through RCIA. And I had no idea! I hope it’s going well for you. I don’t think I’m anywhere near RCIA at this point…however, I’m fast becoming disoriented, disconcerted, and sometimes very nervous about the things I’m learning so far.
 
I’m Protestant and I hang around here both to learn and to provide a Fundamentalist perspective when it seems advisable. The more we understand, the better chance that truth has to prevail.

Another very good book is called "Catholic For A Reason"
I highly recommend it.
I’ve read most of the Surprised By Truth books and cried as I did because I was fool enough to leave the church for 34 years and neglected these wonderful treasures.

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll have to add it to my list. Whew…so much to read. I think I’m also going to get ahold of Fundamentalism and Catholicism, and I very very desperately need a good church history book. Thanks again for the suggestion.

I believe the Holy Spirit leads them here to learn the truth about His Church and to come back home to it.😃
 
I don’t know, we Protestants are sort of like the dog doo on the lawn, when one steps on it(the dog doo) no matter how hard you scrape and rub you just can’t get rid of it!!
 
I am an RCIA catechumen who already considers himself Catholic, even though I have not yet been baptized and confirmed. I formally renounced my Protestant adherency status during Christmas, and I’m not looking back. Joining CA and reading the posts have helped to convince me that I’ve truly heeded the call to join your ranks. (It only took me 31 years to catch on.)😉 Thanks CA! 🙂

I don’t call myself a protestant, and I don’t call myself a catholic. I think of myself as a non-denominational christian.

I found this forum through Karl’s e-letter. Someone forwarded his e-letter to me once, and I enjoyed his insight and signed up. I frequent catholic answers and christiananswers.net for spiritual guidance.

Why I am here:
  1. I deeply admire many Catholics (not the least of which is my wife), as well as many non-catholic christians.
  2. It is the best Christian forum I have seen, and I enjoy “socializing” with those who share faith in christ.
  3. I don’t think Catholics and non-Catholic Christians should be enemies. We disagree alot, but we agree alot too.
  4. If we could put our “sibling rivalry” on hold publicly and work together in society (emphasize “in society”, as I don’t mean we shoudl forget our differences or even not discuss them) we could change the world on important issues (abortion, and the court’s assault on religious freedom, to cite two examples).
  5. As a student in a Baptist high school I thought (and told others) it would be better for someone to find out about Jesus through the Catholic Church than not at all. Likewise, as someone who married into a Catholic family and worships at a Catholic church, I think it would be better for someone to find christ through a protestant church than never.
Even when i grew up among those who criticized catholocism, I saw catholics never as a problem but a blessing. I feel the same about sincere and devout evangelicals. I’d pick a sincere evangelical over a lukewarm catholic, and a sincere catholic over a lukewarm evangelical, any day.

I found a lovely beautiful church, the service was divine, I never felt closer to God, and THEN it started with this “partner” homily. 😦
