Why are Protestants so Anti-Catholic?

The Bible tells me

For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God" (Romans 10:3).

2nd Corinthians 11:3-4, “But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the SIMPLICITY that is in Christ. For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another GOSPEL which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.”
Code:
Romans 4:5 "But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness."
“That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth” -Philippians 2:10

2nd Corinthians 11:13-14, “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.”

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” -John 1:12-13

Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

John 14:6, "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Acts 26:18, “To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.”

Romans 10:13, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

1st Corinthians 3:11, “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

Galatians 3:26, “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.”

“He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him:
THE WORD that I have spoken, the same SHALL JUDGE him in the last day.”
–THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, JOHN 12:48

“If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed.” (John 8:31)

unto all them that obey him. (Hebrews 5:9)
He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. (1 John 2:4)
And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? (Luke 6:46)
And the point of all this Scripture quoting is …?

Further, I would ask more broadly: in the Scripture you quoted, how do you related it to other verses in the same book/ In different books, but sharing the same theme? Or are you given to looking at each verse independent from the rest?

How do you relate NT Scripture to the Old? How is Christ the Messiah based on the OT? On what is revealed in the NT? By the discussions of the early church fathers such as Origen, Tertullian (who by the way coined the term New Testament), Justyn Martyr. Why is Revelation included in the NT and the inspired writing of St. Clement not?

There is an old aphorism: if you want Scripture quotations, ask a fundamentalist. If you want the meaning of faith, watch a Catholic.

Over-generalized to be sure, but there is a kernel of truth in there to reflect upon.

The Lord brings the topic of truth to bear on our love for Him. This again underscores its importance. “Jesus answered and said to him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings; and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent Me” (John 14:23-24). And then again “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words shall not pass away” (Matthew 24:35).

???

And what does this have to do with anything?

???

And what does this have to do with anything?
Exactly. And the premise, what I can gather of it, totally ignores what we are told by John: that all of what Jesus said and did is not recorded for it would fill libraries. Or at least one DVD.

A significant portion of the NT is Paul’s epistles, generally corrective letters to communities who are straying from the norm. Does he state the norm? No, not directly, but we have from his words that the norm is whatever he told them by letter or word of mouth.

Hence Apostolic Tradition. Not the traditions of man, but the tradition of living as Jesus showed them, worshiping as Jesus showed them. Showed = visual, Told = oral. Hmm. Not written.

Therefore, we can gather much that is fruitful from Scripture, but it alone is not sufficient.

This is so true…

I ask protestants this one easy question

Do you believe in the Diadache??

they will say no , because its not in the bible

*So I will say… Well almost, but in the 1st through 3rd centurys it almost became regular canon. And it was sometimes listed as scripture in question…
*

And they usually will say, “so what does that matter?”

*And I will say…Well then you obviouslt trust that the Catholic Church made the correct decision of not including the diadache in the bible then. Since it almost made it. It was the bishops choices(through the spirit of course) that effected whether the Didache was put in the bible or not…So you then don’t believe in the Didache correct?
*

No, I don’t

So then you trust that when the Catholic Church omited the didache from the bible that they made the correct decision then?? I mean if the Catholic Church is a false church as you proclaim how can you trust what they canonized and chose in the bible was correct?? For all we know the didache could be the word of God?

Silence

So we see… that ALL christians are effected by the CC. The decisions alone on the canon of the bible show how much protestants unknowingly trust that the CC is the true church…They just won’t admit it

I still have yet to find a protestant than can truely answer this question

I honestly think deep down it is jealousy because we are apostolic. Because history is so against them. They know deep down that their church was created by Martin Luther and not Jesus Christ, but out of their arrogance and pride they cannot submit to the Catholic Church. They want a “christianity” that works for them, allows abortion, allows women priests, and allows them to do more of what they want. So they join the church ‘they feel’ is right from them, and then justify it by attacking the Catholic Church in order to make them feel better and justify their own beliefs. But in reality they are only doing harm to thierselves and their own salvation.

One man popping up out of nowhere 1500 years after Christ out of pride and ego to seperate the church and have his own followers. Much like Mohammed wanted. That is the epitamy of protestantism…and its very sad that all of the theological beliefs protestants base their views on is ONE man.

By attacking the Catholic Church, you claim that God did it wrong for 1500 years before Luther came. And thus they make Luther the real Savior and not Jesus. So they contradict themselves unknowingly out of their zeal and hatred for the church… And when they read the ECF, some of which who were friends and diciples of the apostles, which makes it even worse for them because they know Martin Luther did not talk to or even converse with one apostle like St. Igantius, or Clement, or Polycarp did. And thus because of this, the result to the only thing they can do, attack the church…

But i think the most important thing. Is to look at the fruits of protestantism. 30,000 divisions, false prophets like Ellen White and Joseph Smith, the SDAs, the Mormons/Book of Mormon, the denial of the Trinity(oneness groups), creation of the Rapture, dispensationilism, annihilationism, etc, etc… All these heresys have sprouted up from protestantism, the worst being the division since the bible says Christ and his Church are ONE. This here prooves that protestantism is nothing but another heresy like the gnostics or arianism…In fact protestantism is much like Gnosticism(the invisible church)… But it is here that the fruits proove they are false… How the Catholic Church has stayed together in unity for over 2000 years is proof that it is the true church… As they say, Satan is the author of confusion, and what spells out confusion more than 30,000 protestant denominations…
Very good post and oh so true.
Satan is working overtime to cause discension and seems to especially attack our wonderful priests. We must never stop praying for them and for our beautiful Church :crossrc:

Protestants only hurt themselves when they pass on information about the Catholic Church they know isn’t true or don’t care to clarify. At the end of the day, God knows how we are and what we have done.

Your sources are about as reliable as Jack Chick! The “atrocities” of the Spanish Inquisition ware far less atrocious than those of the civil courts.

Truthnlight, guess what? We STILL have the Inquisition – and it is a very good thing that we do. The Spanish Inquisition was only one of the “big” ones. Actually that was established by the crown to identify Muslims who were falsely converting to Catholicism in order to undermine the faith from within the Church. Queen Isabella’s personal confessor was a Jewish convert – and a man of deep Christian faith: a saint!

Today the Inquisition is known as the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The current Pope was head of it for something like 18 years.

Shhhh! You’ll have them all running for the hills! 😃 … “The Inquisition is coming! The Inquisition is coming!”

That’s why I didn’t even bother to respond to his comment. When someone reads something that’s obviously propaganda and believes it, they don’t want to know the truth. They’re desparate to accept anything that appears to justify their position. That get’s back to the point I made that the poster was responding to. One of the reasons they’re anti-Catholic, is because, when faced with the facts of history, they have to choose between continuing to have a belief in something that was created in the 16th century, or they have to change the belief system many of them have had for their whole lives. It’s often easier to just not learn the truth, thus there’s no choice to be made. It’s the old addage “Ignorance is bliss.” Rather than learn the truth, attack it, and you’ll feel better about your own belief.

funny…or not so…it was because of the new national religions established by the protestants that America was formed…the pilgrims etc wanted to escape from the national religions of the protestants…and it was Queen Isabella who sent back a letter …with Columbus, ordering the spanish settlers to NOT turn the local natives into slaves…and by the way…I resent that term being so inclusice…ie Native American…any person born in these United States of America is a ‘Native American’ as I am…my parents came from Italy…later they became Naturalized citizens of America…I used to kid some of my African american students on the oneness of humankind…'and as we all know ,right mankind originated in africa…they would proudly smile…good…thats makes us all brothers…right?? wow what funny looks then…this is a great site…speaking of slavery…the election of 1860 was basically over just one issue…slavery…the tarriff also a part…but Steve Douglas ,a demoncrate, the party of slavery, had a slogan…" I am personally against slavery , but its the law and they are the property of their owners…" mmmmmmmm speaking of an echo chamber…

I’ve just finished reading some of the threads on the Traditional section of this Board, and I find myself asking, “Why are CATHOLICS so anti-Catholic?”

Dressing up vs. casual, Saturday vs. Sunday mass, music preferences, receiving our Lord on the hand vs. the tongue vs. on the tongue while kneeling, etc.–all of these things have been “OKed” by the authorities in the Catholic Church. Yet it seems that there are those Catholics who must challenge everything that the Popes have declared righteous.

I find this quite upsetting. After all, the Pope is our authority because that’s who Jesus put in charge. What right do I have to challenge him?

I think this kind of thing hurts the Catholic Church even more than Protestants who are anti-Catholic.

All of the things you mentioned are trivial in the broader scheme of things, looking at our temporal existence on Earth, and I don’t think they are anti-Catholic at all. Those things are all relative to the perceptions of the time. Now, if you said you had a problem with Catholics who use birth control, or who support having female priests, or who don’t feel they need to go to confession or even go to Church, I might think you had a topic that is relevant to discuss about. But that would be off-topic anyway.

mmortal03, I guess I didn’t express myself well.

I agree that Catholics shouldn’t fuss at each other about the “trivialities” of our faith. That’s what I was trying to say. Although I agree that Catholics need to agree about the big issues and not disobey the teachings of the church, it’s those little trivial things that make up our everyday life, so when someone fusses about them and tells us we are doing it wrong, it’s hard to take.

Yep, I think one can interpret what you wrote in two different ways. Now I understand exactly what you were trying to say. 🙂

Why are Protestants who have bias against the Catholic Church so Anti-Catholic. There are numerous Non-Catholic Members here who are extremely Anti-Catholic. I won’t mention their names.
The Protestants would say that they are not Anti-Catholic, but against some Catholic teachings that go against the Bible. I agree.

To go against Catholic teaching is, by definition, to be anti-Catholic. A Catholic is the living embodiment of the theology, doctrine and dogma of the kata holos church that Christ established.

That you maintain that Catholic teachings go against the Bible shows you have far yet to go in your understanding of the Catholic views of Scripture, Apostolic Tradition and Magisterium.

I would maintain it is you who “go against the Bible,” not Catholics.

There are no Catholic teachings that go against the bible.

I find it very funny that protestants believe that everyone gets to interpret the bible as they choose… that its all a personal thing. But if Catholics interpret the bible differently somehow Catholics are wrong.

1Tim2
5 For there is one God, and one mediator of God and men, the man Christ Jesus:

1Tim3:1 A faithful saying: if a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. 2 It behoveth therefore a bishop to be blameless, the husband of one wife, sober, prudent, of good behaviour, chaste, given to hospitality, a teacher, 3 Not given to wine, no striker, but modest, not quarrelsome, not covetous, but 4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all chastity. 5 But if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?

The Jesuit Oath

“Go ye, then, into all the world and take possession of all lands in the name of the Pope. He who will not accept him as the Vicar of Jesus and his Vice-Regent on earth, let him be accursed and exterminated.”
