Why Are So Many Pregnant Mothers Dying in D.C.?

I’d be interested to know who you think in the US are Nazis.

We probably have some that call themselves Nazis. And they have the right to speech and self expression like any other citizen in the US. Likewise, we have the right to ignore them as the basement dwelling weirdos that they are. They are hardly a threat to people of color.

I wonder how much of our unusually high maternal mortality rate is due to obesity and other conditions that are the result of poor lifestyle choices. The woman in one of those articles was absolutely massive: I would have been more surprised if both mother and child came out unscathed.

Folks like Andrew Anglin and the people waving swastika flags in Charlottesville. I suspect you will soon counter with something akin to “Nazis are members of the German Nazi Party in the early 20th century and that doesn’t actually exist anymore”.

But these are people flat out choosing to drape themselves in Nazi regalia, chant Nazi slogans and aren’t shy in their racism, homophobia and general vileness. If they want to claim to be Nazis then they certainly seem like Nazis.

I believe this has a lot to do with the abortion industry. Make giving birth the scariest option!

Yeah, these are the people I was thinking about, but they aren’t common. I’ve never seen one in my life. Nobody takes them seriously here.

I think it may be at least partially due to the disproportionate amount of abortions women in the black community obtain. Abortions(especially multiple abortions) can lead to complications in subsequent pregnancies.

It seems they have successfully killed at least one person and injured riots; perhaps they should be taken seriously.

That’s one notable case in recent years and hate groups are already being tracked to catch them on plans of violence.

They are still not really a threat and get more relevance than they deserve.

That is why they were but one example of racism still being a problem. Which it is unfortunately.

Yes, it is unfortunate. Hopefully political discourse will become more civil so that people will stop seeking solutions in extremist ideologies anywhere on the spectrum. But, let’s get back to this thread being about healthcare.

I have not followed the thread thoroughly, and we are getting off track discussing some of the few knuckle draggers who exist within the United States. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU); a group of attorneys who generally respond to civil rights cases, have at least twice represented individuals who have self identified as Nazis; both, I beleive in parades, one of which was in Skokie, Illinois.

A remark was made concerning Charlottesville that in the US, there are about 8,000 of the KKK; another group of knuckle draggers. Both groups are reprehensible to the great majority of people, whether they are of faith or not. We, however, have a Constitution which protects stupid and hateful speech (in spite of what some far Left youth seem to think). They may not start riots, but they can get permission to march down Center Street, either in their bedsheets or with swastikas on their pseudo uniforms.

Sadly, we have a press which seems to appreciate agitating and stirring the pot, so instead of everyone simply ignoring these cretins, they get national news coverage - exactly what they were looking for. One would think that the editors of the news agencies would be cognizant of this and simply put the story buried somewhere that most people would not easily find; thus avoiding the backlash of “Censorship! Censorship!”, but then Voltaire had it right centuries ago - the problems with common sense is that it is not all that common.

I don’t want to derail the thread, but do want to acknowledge an interest in discussing this further. 😊

No idea how you are using the phrase identity politics here. Maybe you could explain.

Other developed countries have lower rates of post-partum death and abortion is legal in many of them. The US lags behind in care for post-partum mothers without regard to age, race, etc. but it’s particularly bad for POCs. The topic here is maternal death but this is true in heath care across the board.

I believe the original comment was about “systemic racism”. As in, racism that is inherent in the legal / government system, not that some people in the US are racist.

Racism is not the cause, and there is no more systemic racism in this country.
(emphasis mine)

Are you kidding me? Where do you live, that you see no evidence of systemic racism whatsoever? Must be paradise. Tell me, please, because I want to live there.

It’s sad that many people write off inequities that break along ethnic lines as nonsense, responsibility issues, or “race” politics. I find this particularly appalling on a Catholic board. Many of the same things were said about the Irish during the potato famine and plenty of the Irish and Italians that emigrated to the US simply because they were catholic.
I vehemently disagree. Racism has been such an overused word it’s been rendered meaningless by comments such as this.

During the times of Irish and Italian immigration to the USA, racism wasn’t used as a bludgeon.

What IS appalling about this site is that is what goes on here.

In particular, I feel sorry for the straight, white conservative men this targets.

Shame on those who do this!

Are you kidding me?
No. And if there is any systemic racism or sexism, it’s against white men.
Tell me, please, because I want to live there.
Let’s start with downtown Detroit and DC. Just don’t be surprised if people starting at you because you have light skin even though you think you’re defending minorities. 🤣

Don’t forget about systemic racism against Asians. They have to work harder than everybody else to get into the same schools.
