Obviously crack/cocaine, meth, and things like that are sinful to use. But why are things like weed sinful? Why is getting “high” a sin?

I see so many people at school doing these things and I want to understand why it’s bad for your body (although I’ve heard weed doesn’t hurt that much, if at all) and soul. 😦

Oh, and how could I not mention California? They’re awful close to legalizing weed. But even if it’s legal doesn’t make it any more right. Just look at abortion…

I digress. Could someone enlighten me here? 👍

They lower your inhibitions and put you in the near occasion for for sin is one reason.

Good question…

The reason it is a sin is because it is abusing the tools God gave us and using them in a way they were not meant to be used. Not to mention we are damaging our bodies("temples of the Holy Spirit). We have to remember we are here on earth to know, love and serve God in this world. Drugs are more of showing self love and gratification.

Hope that helps.

God Bless,

I’ve been on this forum since last October. I’ve seen this subject come up a few times. There seems to be 2 schools of thought amongst the forum posters. First, all intoxicants in any amount are absolutely forbidden. This group varies in how serious a sin it is. The other group contends that a moderate or occaisional use of intoxicants is okay. It’s when we venture into addiction or when the use of the intoxicant takes preedence over our commitment and obligations to God, family and work that it becomes a sin. This group tends to see “weed” as just another intoxicant. However, they point out that while there may be some room for use of the intoxicant the fact that it is illegal makes it a sin. I guess you could argue whether it’s “illegality” is warranted (no pun intended), but so long as it is illegal, the use of it is a sin. I tend to fall in to the second group. It’s probably best to avoid the use of intoxicants at all, but occaisional or moderate use is not, IMHO, a sin. However, I have to agree that condoning illegal activity is absolutely wrong. Also, on a secular note, there is substantial difference between legalizing marijuana or decriminalization. Legalizing it would make it like celery. You could buy it anywhere and use it anyway you like. Decriminalization means it would essentially be like alchohol. Regulated, taxed and it’s sale and use would be restricted. I don’t think anyone except the hardcore potheads and drug dealers are advocating legalization. There have been isolated attempts to go for decriminalzation but they have failed. From a public policy perspective, I think we are trending toward decrinimalization.

We are to render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s. That means if we live within his square mileage, we are to obey his civil laws, unless there is a serious reason not to. Breaking a speed limit to get someone to medical care would be a serious reason. Protesting a grevious injuctice would be another. “Getting high” is not.

Marijuana may not be as bad as soem other substances. But cannabis does remain in your head and body for many years after using it. We are to value, use, and respect the minds GOD gave us; not contaminate them just to get high or mellow.

And, last but not least, the drug market is saturated with violence. When you buy street drugs, you are contributing to that violence by helping to finance it. That’s a sin against life, “Thou shalt not kill.” Even if you live where it has become legal, contributing to that market would be sinful.

the problem is, things like drugs, alcohol, things that get you “high”, they are sinful because they dull the conscience, and of course i don’t have to explain why that is bad…

and then there is the health side of it, breathing in smoke and other chemicals is going to be bad for you…my doctor actually explained it to me, but i don’t really remember the medical terms he was using…but the basic thing he was telling me was, when you smoke, there is a lining in your lungs that you need to fight off infections and other things, and that gets destroyed when you breath in the smoke, and so of course that is bad…

well, i’m not to good at explaining the heath risks of such things, but the risks to your mind are just as bad if not worse, so that’s something to think about.

ok hope this helps, tc.

The reason it is a sin is because you are the Temple and you are corrupting it! Not everything was allowed to enter the Temple of God.

Another reason is that God speaks to you trough your brain. The drugs darken your brain. You are high and you don’t think clearly. You stop distinguishing between good and bad. It is the same like when you are getting drunk. You put a fog on your brain. You are making it difficult for God to speak with you.

We must take care of our temples, and drugs destroy them.

I think the only logical reason that the Church can say that using Cannabis is a sin is on the basis that it is illegal. As per GEddie, render unto Caesar and all that.

As Big Ro says above, there are various reasons along the basis of health concerns and ‘clouding the judgement’ concerns, but these arguments fall down when faced with the fact that cigarettes and alcohol respectively have the same effects and yet are not sinful.

You could argue that weed and psychedelics expand the mind.

I will just throw it out there that if it weren’t for psychedelics I very well could be an atheist now…but I believe in God.

If you used alcohol to the extent that it clouded your mind, it could become a sin. Particularly if such usage became habitual, and especially if you then got behind the wheel of a motor vehicle.

That doesn’t mean you were doing something sinless. A child may be born out of an act of fornication - God can choose to take a sinful act and produce good from it. The fact that you used illicit drugs and that led to your belief in God does not mean that your use of illicit drugs was not sinful - it just means that God may have used chosen to produce some good from that sinful act.

I don’t really know if psychedelics, done in moderation, are really a sin.

Yes, I meant to write that drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes are not sinful per se. However, using cannabis is sinful per se, while the effects of cannabis are very similar to those of alcohol and cigarettes.

I do believe so.

They cloud your judgment and lead to rash decisions. They also make you look like a fool to those smart enough not to use them.

Actually, all illegal drugs are sinful. Becoming intoxicated whether on alcohol or any other drug is gravely sinful.

You have obviously never done psychedelics. They have never led me to any rash decisions, and I have done a lot of them. As for me being a fool…my professors would tell you otherwise.

I suppose it depends. CCC 2291 (here) says, ‘The use of drugs inflicts very grave damage on human health and life. Their use, except on strictly therapeutic grounds, is a grave offense. Clandestine production of and trafficking in drugs are scandalous practices. They constitute direct co-operation in evil, since they encourage people to practices gravely contrary to the moral law.’ I’m not a canon lawyer but I suppose it depends what they mean by ‘drugs’. Would cannabis be included in ‘drugs’ if it was not illegal? Would cigarettes become included in this if they were criminalised? What if I pick a couple of mushrooms with psychadelic mushrooms and cook and eat them in a jurisdiction where such an act is not illegal? These are questions I honestly cannot answer. I don’t want to confuse anyone who is tempted by drugs because health, addiction etc. is also a consideration.

The difference with regard to “clouding one’s mind” is that one can drink alcohol limitedly, without such clouding taking place, and most users do so; whereas in the use of cannabis and similar substances, the mind effects are the reason for using it. No one smokes marijauana for the smell or taste.
