Why are the crucifixes covered during Holy Week?

Hi,
Please, I want answers to the following:

1. Why are the crucifixes covered in purple cloth during Holy Week?
2. Is it adulatrous to kneel before the statue of our Mother Mary while praying?
   I want to appreciate CAF for helping us to understand our Catholic Faith.
