It is also ironic that many of the people who claim to live under grace and so need no attention to the Law also will deny the efficacy of the means of grace which the Church gives to the faithful.

But when they focus on the NT writing they ignore things such as Ananias and Saphira and the harsh warning about the wicked perishing because of their sin.

…it’s the ole throw the baby out with the bath water… they deem themselves capable of distributing the Gifts and Graces of the Holy Spirit according to thier own wisdom… after all Christ died for all sin and to make us right with the Father so who needs the Church that Christ Built?!

Correct! …they use those special specks (‘a good God would not…’ and ‘God is love so He wouldn’t…’); they fail to understand that in the Old Covenant as in the New Covenant God is Good all the Time… it is man who choses to transgress or circumvent God’s Commandments rendering his Eternal Life futile.

This question and its first evoked response, really generates a more fundamental question:

where they reasonable to have this belief ?

I think that we find the answer to be quite Biblical:
By his divine power, he has given us all the things that we need for life and for true devotion, bringing us to know God himself, who has called us by his own Glory and goodness… If you have a generous supply of these, they will not leave you ineffectual or unproductive; they will bring you to a real knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. (2 St. Peter 1:3-8)
…so it is for the spiritual man (1 Corinthians 2:1-16), those who seek to serve God and not to gain man’s praises; it is the Holy Spirit Himself that comes to their aide, Revealing God’s innermost thought (2 St. Peter 1:21).
…sadly, Satan refuses to yield and makes every effort possible to hinder God’s Salvific Plan… as the Apostle stated, he is always on the prowl seeking to devour all, specially those who claim Christ; it’s been my perspective that those who are of the Priesthood, as well as the deeply devoted, suffer even more onslaught as the Satan attempts to undo Christ’s Body, the Church. Two particular tools he uses, with very pronounced success, are pride and envy… we can, in restrospect, see this clearly as the very essence of schism in the Church has been produced and fueled by both pride and envy. When people of God submit themselves in humble obedience to the Holy Spirit, He can produce wonderful things such as the Sacred Writings and Sacred Tradition… when pride and envy enters into the heart and mind of God’s people, we can unknowing/unwillingly serve Satan as we reject the Holy Spirit’s Guidance in favor of our own wisdom… we become tools of evil used to shatter the Mystical Body of Christ…

Well…I suppose it’s an answer of sorts. The question is not one of doctrinal doubt, but a methodic doubt.: seeing a difficulty, how should the question be handled? Or see the question from another view:
Surely those ( in the times before establishment and use of the Church’s Authority,) must have been reasonable people, and have reasons to believe scripture to be inspired. What were those reasons?
Your response seems to ignore the question, implying perhaps that those who believed scripture to be inspired were really unreasonable….( ??)

…sorry axman, I tend to view things (in my mind) quite clear… but my thoughts do not necessarily translate as clear once spoken/written…
…what I meant to convey is that we have always had the guidance of the Holy Spirit; it is the thrid Person of God that has inspired both Believers and non-Believers to seek God (even when we do not undestand that that’s what is going on); so it is with the Sacred Writings… before the Sacred books were compiled as a Bible, the Holy Spirit not only Inspired the various authors (I would suggest co-authors) but also those who would keep and maintain the Sacred Writings and the Sacred Traditions…
…I then attempted to explain that the reason why we are still struggling with the Biblical Canon is due to man’s often times obstinate and unyielding will as man relies on his own wisdom (egocentrism) to make pronouncements that hinder the Body of Christ (the Pharisees and Sadducees are perfect examples of this, as well as the myriads of Christians who, unyieldingly, refuse to become One with the Body).
