Why are the ten commandments different?

Why does the catholic church combine the ten commandments differently than other churches? I was asked what the 2nd commandment was and I said “Don’t say the Lord’s name in vain” and my friend said “no it’s you should make for yourself an idol”. So I said “what? that’s the 1st commandment” and it sort of went on from there…
