Why are there so many mean-spirited people on these forums?

It seems to me that certain people on this forum hold AA.to be sancrosanct… more holy than the Church.

How ironic that people are going to start getting nasty on a thread about people being nasty.
 
Nope! 🙂 Being judgmental would be to think ill of you in some way, or to assume I know the person you are, and I do not. I just didn’t think your post was very nice, tis all.

I’m the most Catholic person you could hope to meet. And if speaking the truth is “nasty”, then i stand Guilty as charged.

Not obeying Jesus (hating people, etc…) DOES lead to Hell… Don’t believe me? read the Scirptures.

Sometimes people need to be reminded that the way to Hell is easy (complacencey, etc.) and “there are many” who follow that path (Matthew…).

We all need to wonder about our eternal destiny once in awhile. We should never assume it (Hell) couldn’t happen to us… The OSAS dogma is ubiquitous in our culture… in subtle and not so subtle ways…

Anyway, God bless you… I forgive you for calling me “nasty”… I don’t mind since Jesus was treated the same way… and he told us that we would be “hated by all…” because He himself was hated… (…still is - since “Whatever you do to the least of his brethren…”).
 
Let’s stop here. If we keep going, this thread will be itself proving the OP’s question. 😛
 
i think the answer to the question is that, as stated in so many words by other posters, people on the i-net seem to think it is somehow OK to say wahtever comes “natural” to them, no matter how un-Christian or rude, because they don’t have to actually face the person they are speaking to and no one knows who it is who is being rude (etc)…

I think that is about as cowardly and lacking in integrity as you can get. What is that obserevation someone once made, that inetegrity involves what you are (who you are) when “no one” is looking??

I pray for all on this forum… God bless you all… May you possess Jesus in a big way.

See, I don’t have a problem with that – and I doubt estesbob does either. If religion has helped you overcome an addiction, that’s great! It’s certainly helped many people.

It’s going to a meeting with the specific intent of evangelizing and trying to make converts that’s the issue. That is what I object to, and consider both morally reprehensible and utterly tactless.

If it didn’t sound “nice” maybe the problem is within you, not that the message is not “nice”…

I have been attending AA meetings for 22 years and have never heard anyone prostelyze. Of course people talk about Jesus and whoever else they consider their higher power. There is a big difference between that and trying to convert someone to your faith.

gettng back on topic I was wondering whether I was percieved as a know-it-all. I though about it and remembered there was just one time when i thought I had made a mistake— but I was wrong…😃

Well, that is not what you said, but even if it had been, there is still nothing wrong with going to AA with the specific intent to share Jesus… Jesus is the only one who can permanently cure anyone of anything… If we could be healed by anything other than Jesus, he wouldn’t have had to come to Earth and die for us… He would have just sat up in Heaven and shrugged and said, "They don’t really need my Sacrifice… They will find [that way other than me that works just the same… (AA??)]. I don’t need to go through all that suffering and dying when there is another way… "

And don’t say Jesus came only to save our souls. He came to save us in every way we need to be saved…

I don’t recall anyone (at Evangelization forum or elsewhere) saying he/she went to AA to CONVERT people… But again, even if he/she did, so what??

I thought it was a free country… I thought it was a good thing to tolerate “diversity”… whether at AA or wherever…

Have you really went to an AA meeting and told people that Jesus is the only one who permanently cure anyone of anything?Unless you were at a closed meeting for only members of your Church I can not imagine anything more inapropriate.

Well that proves to me you have never been to an AA meeting. Hopefully you will never have to.

If you want to discuss this further we should start another thread. I would hate to spoil my perfect record of never having been mean spritited.

Yep, I hear ya. I once joined another Catholic posting board, and within a few days I was told I “must have been an ugly child” because I enjoyed dating when I was single (yeah, didn’t make sense to me, either). When I complained that this remark was uncharitable and that I felt compelled by Matthew 5:21-26 to try to make peace with this poster, I was asked if I wanted to “go another round.”

Also, I was called a fool when I criticized the School of the Americas. Really — the exact post to me was “You are a fool.” And that was the whole post. Nice, huh?

Suffice it to say that the internet is a magnet for breedbates. When you receive a rude post, remember that most of us reading it can see it for what it is.
 
I have had many people on this forum accuse me of having a bad “tone” or being “smug”. If you knew me, you would laugh hysterically at this notion. I am the biggest softie around.

But I do have a problem in conveying my real “tone” in writing. I’m kind of a perfectionist when I write. It is a result from having to write a lot of business correspondence and having to convey a certain degree of professionalism, I work hard at this day in and day out. It’s equally as hard to just turn that off when I’m here on this forum and it seems to really get under people’s skin. I mean really, really under their skin! I’m always being reprimanded! :ouch:

It is, in fact. And I’ll note briefly that I and other people I know have recovered from addiction without any belief in Jesus, for whatever that’s worth. Any discussion, let’s take elsewhere…
