Why are there thirteen at the Last Supper if Judas was dead?

My brother read the Da Vinci Code. He said it claims that Mary Magdalene is the “13th” person in the Last Supper paintings. She is suposedly portrayed next to Christ.

My brother said he has looked at a few Last Supper paintings and there are indeed 13 people present. Why 13 if Judas was already dead?
