I understand this is a fallen world and bad things happen. But since Jesus died for our sins, why are we still being punished? The whole idea was for Jesus to save us from Father’s wrath, so if Father still punishes us, that means his wrath hasn’t yet subsided.

Where people choose to act in ways that bring harm to themselves and others, this is not God acting. Sin and wrong deeds bring their own consequences to a person who sins, and that often impacts on others around them, and even upon the environment causing various planetary issues… Many difficulties in our lives are caused or worsened by ourselves, by others, by lack of knowledge, by misunderstanding or failing to know what is needed to better our lives…by many causes in the present and past generations, by other difficulties caused by people or circumstances. Life isn’t easy and I sincerely hope those who feel desperate will find more joy and focus that will bring greater peace.

However, the Church answers your question in the Catechism of the Catholic Church

God is not a ‘simple’ entity.
Look at the Universe, from the greatest galaxy to the smallest atom. The double helix. Nature and all it’s wonders of death and life, rebirth, regeneration and reproduction.

God is complex. What you percieve as ‘punishment’ may not be that at all. Jesus could easily have percieved His crucification as punishment - but there was something MUCH bigger, and more complex in the works.

The world is the way it is because God wants it, allows it, and wills it.
Each life is precious, but each person is not the beginning and the end of everything.

I would question why you feel your gift of life is a punishment. Is the world not glorious enough for you?

Everyone has hard times. Everyone born has to live on earth and take what comes with that. God isn’t punishing us when bad things happen. That is evil. God is good. God loves us. God loves you.

This time isn’t forever.
God* is*.

Jesus saved us from our sins not from suffering and death.

Is death really that bad? Is death really the end? In some ways death is like birth, the beginning of something new. Is suffering really bad? I mean sure it hurts, but is it really that bad? Physical training can be extremely brutal, but if it leads some place great like winning the Olympics was it bad?

Who says we ARE still being punished

Not necessarily. What you think of as the Father’s wrath, may be nothing more than “logical consequences” of bad behavior, or the necessary trials of our spiritual education.

Jesus sacrifice was not a cosmic “reset” button. It was an example and a proof of the blessings associated with a proper and correct walk with God. It was also the final satisfaction for the original sin in the Garden, but his was far from it’s only or it’s “whole idea”. To me Christ’s teachings and example were equally important to our well being as was the cross.

However…The thing to remember is that the consequences of that first sin cannot be undone. Man was changed by the the act of eating from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
The consequences of that change - our ability to know, and the responsibility and culpability that go with that knowledge, remain with and in us. Suffering is a part of that knowledge.

So - What DID change with Jesus sacrifice?

We have, set before us the perfect example of the Christian life. The perfect walk with God. For God was always with Jesus and Jesus with God. Likewise God is always with us…Are we always with Him??
The Holy Spirit is poured out onto the world for any who are able to and wish to be filled with him. So be baptized (immersed and changed) by that Holy Spirit, turn to and be with God and there will be no suffering or death. So says the Son of the Living God.

Peace
James

Death is good.
But to die is sometimes painfull…
What can we do?

Jesus frees us from our sins, but only if we want to be freed. This is still a broken world and we still have free will and that includes the free will to choose to sin. If Jesus’s sacrifice on the cross had ‘fixed’ everything as had been suggested, then our free will would have been taken away. That’s not what he wants. He wants us, instead, to recognise him for who he is and find our consolation and salvation from all that afflicts us in this life by trusting in him.

The protestant idea of why Jesus died on the cross is completely wrong. Adam’s sin destroyed the road to heaven. When Jesus died on the cross he built a bridge over the broken road. He didn’t die so everyone could go to heaven. You have to live in this valley of tears and work out your salvation in trembling and fear.
Adam condemned all of us and Jesus made it possible for us to save ourselves by cooperating with God’s grace.

There is no universal salvation and there is no salvation by simply saying, “I believe in Jesus. I’m saved.”

Jesus died to save us from our sins.
Save means to be freed from evil.
Jesus died to free us from the evil of our sins.
When we sin, we are in rebellion against God.

Sin is failure to love God or neighbor, due to a perverse attachment to one or more of the goods that God gives us.

Jesus died to free us from our strong inclination, almost a compulsion to sin, so that we are enabled to love God and our neighbor and thus find happiness.

But, His grace does not force us to turn away from the misery of sin, it only enables us to do so.

Thus, many Christians refuse His grace and choose to sin anyway. Thus, they still suffer from the misery of sin, and will not be happy. We all have a choice.

As for other sufferings, not caused by sin, even Jesus suffered. We can use our sufferings and offer them to God in reparation for our sins, or for the conversion of others. Thus sufferings can be used for the good of ourselves and others.

Padre Pio was a very holy saint. Yet he accepted extreme sufferings for the conversion of others, which are still happening years after he died.

Thus all things work together for the good of those who love God.

Now, do your job too, small as it is.
