Why are we Catholic? Do we really desire to be Catholic?

I don’t know, but it seems logical to me that the primary natural, fallen instinct of mankind is to live for pleasure, living for the moment. “If it feels good, do it.” I do not think the world wants the Catholic Church to change its doctrines and teachings because it desires to join the Church. No, I think it desires the Catholic Church to change its teachings in order to ease its (the world’s) conscience. I think there are many “Catholics” who desire the same for the same reason. We want to do as we please and want God to give His stamp of approval.

Many people marry without giving thought to the future consequences; they are “in love” and that is all that matters. When the marriage fails, they want the Church to “bless” their divorce and remarriage. Even if the Church could, would it solve anything? No, it would only make things more disastrous. With marriage being indissoluble, men and women have hope for permanency, working together to solve differences and difficulties. This is part of love. Children enlarges love. If a marriage fails, then the parties must conclude that it failed due to their sinfulness, repent, and get back together or live single. Allowing divorce and remarriage destroys the very foundation of marriage and does not portray the Gospel. The husband is to love his wife as Christ loved the Church. Marriage must be more than fulfilling sexual desires and/or sexual orientation. This is lust.

The more a person possesses, the more unhappy the person will be. We all desire to be content, and think, “If only I had…, I would be happy.” Contentment never comes to that person. Contentment comes when we say, “Enough; no more.” Do we really need luxury? Will luxury make us content? No. Luxury and comfort, are they not just pride and covetousness?

Why am I Catholic? There are a myriad of answers to that question, but I think that, if they do not point to one ultimate conclusion, we are teetering on a precipice: I am a Catholic because the Church is the visible mystical Body of Jesus Christ; and by obedience to its doctrines and teachings, through the Word and Sacraments, by the grace of God I will become an image of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. There are two coins. One has the image of the world; the other Jesus Christ, the Head of the Catholic Church, which is His Body. Which do we desire to look like? Do I really desire to be Catholic?

This is the focus of my life, the most important thing for me is to follow Jesus Christ, receive His precious Body and Blood, love Him above all and my neighbors as myself. Being Catholic is a precious gift of faith. I am constantly overwhelmed by the intense love of Jesus Christ and His mercy by providing us with the sacrament of Penance/Reconciliation. 🙂

I am so grateful to be Catholic.

How on earth does someone go from being brought up atheist into the Catholic church?

Amazing!
