I was very disturbed after the homily at Mass today. Our new pastor went on to say that prior to Vatican II the Church taught that only Catholics can go to heaven unless someone who is not Catholic were 'invincibly ignorant, but that after Vatican II, it doesn’t matter whether you are Catholic, Protestant, Baptist, Jew or even Muslim, you will still go to heaven. Of course, I understand that with God all things are possible and only He knows what is truly in someones heart, but how can a Priest tell his congregation something like this? I did not misinterpret him, he actually said this.

So then why am I Catholic? Why do I bother going to Mass 6 days a week, getting up at 4:30 a.m. 5 days a week so I can make 7:00 Mass before work? Where does John 6:53 fit in to this narrative? I left Mass so upset today that I was in tears on the way home. I don’t know what to do about it. Right now, this minute I am at a ‘why bother’ point. I know that isn’t right and I need some serious pray time to work through this, but if someone could please help me understand. Thank you.
