IKE hit Galveston TX and pretty much wiped it out. For several days prior to the storm hitting, residents were warned to leave or face imminent death. Most did leave. Some rode it out. Those who survived, which thankfully is most of them, are now roaming the streets looking for clean water, shelter, in need of prescription drugs, etc. These people were warned in advance that the state would not be able to rescue them after the storm as it would have its hands full trying to deal with the majority of the damage areas trying to restore power, water, etc.

Still, in the aftermath most of the efforts are now rescue.

So what is it about us that makes us rush in to rescue even when we say we won’t?

Because we’re not monsters?

I have no idea what persuaded people to stay – I mean, the state was paying for evacuations and my understanding is that you have to be living under a rock not to know that a hurricane is coming. I live in Eastern Carolina and when Hanna was headed this way, it was all people talked about for DAYS on end. So, the fact that people stayed and their reasons why completely elude me.

But, we can’t just abandon them, as … idiotic as they may prove to be.

Perhaps the knowledge that we all make stupid mistakes sometimes, and that we would want to be saved from the consequences of such bad decisions if we were in their shoes.
