Why are we drawn to particular saints?

I can list the topic seven women saints. I have read their biographies several times. I am yearning to know more.
 
Because we admire how they, in their humanity, navigated this life.
They are Catholic heroes. 😉
They inspire.
 
Or they are drawn towards us. An elderly Russian Orthodox Christian commented that at the time of baptism when a child is christened and given the name of a saint, that saint becomes your patron, protecting and guiding you. When I read about my ‘patron saint’ I was made aware of that affinity. I now have an icon of my saint.
 
Some people have said their favorite saint speaks to them in some way, either through their writings or by the example of their life. Some claim to feel an actual connection in a spiritual sense, but that is beyond my experience.

I have an affinity for St. Benedict. In my case, it seems to have risen from what I saw as lacking in my life, namely, balance and discipline. The Rule St. Benedict left for us provides a framework that can be applied in many ways not only to monastic life, but to most any sort of life.

I think you will find that the answer to your question varies with the individual.
 
Some saints i seek depending on circumstances. I will go through my saint book until i find one that had similar problems that they rose from. My patron Saint found me the year before my confirmation. Then there are some i just admire…I cant wait until the Blessed Mother Teresa is fully canonized.

There is something about Penitential saints I love. From Mary Magdalene to St. Mary of Egypt to Blessed Angela of Foligno to St. Margaret of Cortona to St. Pelagia the Penitent. The wayward ones are the ones I love. Perhaps they promise that all is not lost no matter how far you veer off the track. Perhaps it is their willingness to complete and dramatic give up all. It does prove God is greater than our pasts. I love St. Gertrude the Great and Maria Goretti as a well. I love the wayward ones, especially.

That’s my opinion too…that we choose some saints ourself from reading about them and liking them…and then others maybe god assigns them to us in heaven and maybe that’s why we feel drawn to them…thats just my thoughts and opinion on it 🙂

One should honour all saints, but we all choose some as our favourites. Why? Because they inspire us more, or perhaps because we know more about them.
