Why are women in my new church wearing cathedral veils?

Hello,
I just moved from hometown to a small city which is 4 hours away. I started attending mass today and realized it was totally different from our church. The women and girls wore cathedral veils. Can you please explain this to me. I felt odd that me and my daughter were the only ones not to have our heads covered.
