Why are you Catholic?

I would like to know what makes Catholicism The Truth. Why are you a Catholic. What is the proof that Catholicism is The Truth. What makes everything else false or inaccurate. This is a simple, yet complex question. I would prefer in depth answers. A smart Catholic is one who after looking at the big picture, and crossing off every other religion/philosophy/idea/concept, has come to the conclusion that Catholicism is The Truth. Why aren’t you a Sufi, a Sikh, a Kabbalist, an Agnostic, a Gnostic, a Shaman, a New Ager, a Muslim, etc. To sum everything up, WHY are you Catholic?
 
I’m Orthodox because I was simply easily introduced to Holy Tradition & Iconography which supplements the history of the Bible.

Islam contradicts what Christ taught, and I believe there is no reason to question the validity of the Bible

Historical evidence in the Bible as well as the fact that Christianity spread so quickly gives me enough evidence to believe in Christ, so Judaism is out.

Atheism is cannot and will not ever disprove God, and i find it far more rational to believe that physical matter came from something beyond physical matter than to believe that physical matter came from literal nothingness (i.e. nonexistence) or always existed.

Agnosticism is unnecessary since I believe in God.

All others that don’t believe in a God are also out.

Those that believe in a material God then have to answer where that material God came from.
 
Quite simply, because it makes the most sense. I think we’re fooling ourselves if we say there is empirical evidence for any belief, Catholic, Atheist, or otherwise. Every other faith I’ve examined has seemed illogical, contradictory, or cannot adequately explain the way the world is.

The Catholic Church has provided consistent, internally coherent answers for all of life’s questions. There was a time where I didn’t want to believe in the Church…but I chose to belong to it anyway simply because I just couldn’t ignore how true its teachings were.

This was my experience also. I had been “church shopping” for a long time and while I had reservations about Catholicism (due to stereotypes and inaccurate information), I kept being drawn back. I’m impressed by the academic tradition of the Church - so many other churches (at least in my experience) seemed to fear philosophy or academic inquiry - probably because their theology would not survive that kind of scrutiny. When I was told in RCIA to “keep thinking and praying and read all you can about the subject - here are some authors to start with” instead of “stop thinking about it because it’s the Devil”, I knew I had found the right place. 👍
 
Te be honest was raised a Catholic by devout parents, but eventually broke away with the Catholic church in my late teens and after 15 years then came back to Catholic faith. I took a long wide turn to realize the church had all the necessary graces to be closer to God and see life more that it is, through the sacraments such as the Eucharist, confession, etc. When reading the New Testament - Acts of Aposotles and the letters followed from St. Paul, St. Peter, showing how the church grew and where it is today. There is no question its the one true faith because no other faith in the world can claim a person like Jesus exclaim he was divine and had documented miracles written about him and plus the amount of people martyered themselves in his name. Sure Hinduism and Buddhism have been around a long time but doesn’t have the same structure and is more dependent in certain regions in the world, while Catholics are all over the world in most part. There is more but could take pages to make other points. God Bless in your journey.
 
Obviously by my profile, I am just now coming into the Church. I come from a very charismatic culture, where my friends and I would stay up very late as teenagers reading the Bible and discussing the many elements. I am very faithful to God and Christ, and have always enjoyed learning the elements of Christ’s teachings.

I have come to the RCC because, as I study the Bible and history more and more, I realize that the Bible as a whole does not make sense from any other perspective. “Faith alone” and “once saved, always saved” have never made sense to me, and I felt like a complete failure as a Christian for not understanding the concepts. I learned the OT, but completely missed the beauty of the Messianic prophesies, and I was taught Revelation in a way that would give me awful nightmares at night. The Protestants, especially the evangelicals and fundamentalists, encourage self-study of the Bible and self-interpretation so much so that it is too easy to get lost and, since it is “left up to interpretation”, you are left with no direction. I wanted to learn the Bible from a scholastic point of view. I don’t want my religion to be like my politics, left up to what I feel and what appeals to me. I want to know what it really means.

When I began studying with Catholics, it all became clear. I cannot find anything that contradicts the beliefs of the Church, which is a first. I don’t feel lost in the study of the faith, and if I have a question, I get an answer.

That’s my cerebral answer. I have spiritual experiences that led me here, all of which have been validated by the academics of the faith.

I am a former Protestant. I converted for marriage 17 years ago. I became Catholic on paper then because we wanted to make other people happy–it seemed the right thing to do. Why am I Catholic today? Because I was called to it–it feels right. It’s called faith for a reason. Never did I feel so close to God as a Protestant. Mass can be a life changing experience if you are open to it.
 
I believe in the Christian God due to a miracle which correlated with the His characteristics. I used to be Protestant, but I came to understand that Protestantism is subjective, relativistic, and individualistic at its core. I realized that if there were objective truth in one realm (science) then all truth is objective. And so I tired of trying to sort out all the theological opinions from one another: 1 Corinthians made it dawn on me that the true Church could not be that way. As I studied, month after month, some of the minute amount of sacramental awareness that I had began to break through, and combined with that my theological leanings quickly started snowballing into a sort of position more similar to the mainline denominations and ancient churches. I was basically hovering in between Catholicism, Orthodoxy, Methodism, Lutheranism, and Anglicanism. However, the latter three didn’t make sense to me because they had no objective authority that could be traced to the apostles, and for the most part their moral standards were crumbling. And authority issues, along with a certain lack of catholicity, cast doubt in my mind upon Orthodoxy as well. So, after studying ancient history and the Fathers, and taking into account the logic of central authority and also of the need for catholicity (being one of the ancient marks of the Church) - and also due to the fact that I had basically been in fear for my salvation and was praying to whatever was out there to come and draw me to the truth (which resulted in an insatiable desire for Rome) - I converted to Catholicism.

I was a non-church attending, non-denominational, non-praying, bible-disliking, nominal Christian… and then, one day, the Holy Spirit said: YOU HAVE TO BE CATHOLIC.

I listened. I signed up to join the Church almost immediately and I started to study.

The Spirit has moved in my life in ways I can’t even describe. I have found so much intellectual truth and food that I am overwhelmed.

When I was Protestant I used to say: I am TIRED of baby food. I am TIRED of sermons that scream about being saved, being saved, being saved, but then never tell me how to BE a Christian… and in the Catholic Church I have found solid food. 🙂

I went from believing I was the sole authority. Believing I could interpret the Bible without any help whatsoever. I went from the height of arrogance to the deepest depths of humility.

So… I am Catholic because it is the Church God called me to and I will remain Catholic because I have recognized that it is THE Church Christ established and THE Church that I have to be in. There is no jumping ship or changing my mind. This is it. If Catholicism is not true then Christianity fails. 🤷

PS: Might be important to note I had, through careful study, ruled out every Protestant denomination as lacking the fullness of truth long before the Spirit called me home.
 
For me the reason I became a Catholic is that it is the fullness of the Christian faith. The reason I am a Christian is that there are only 2 religions on earth that do not follow the pattern of Guy goes off on his own, talks to God, and comes back and tells us all about it. In Islam you have a guy who goes off and God talks to him. Buddhism, guy sits under tree, learns things, comes back and tells others about it. Mormon, guy goes off, speaks to angels and gets magic plates that are not here now, comes back and tells others about them. On and on I can go with religions that follow this pattern.

The 2 exceptions to this rule, Judaism and Christianity. In the Jewish faith, you have hundreds of thousands to a few million people all standing at the base of the mountain and God talks to them directly. In Christianity you have the disciples of Jesus and 1000’s who were witness to many things he did. Not just some guy who goes off by himself and SAYS God said X, Y or Z.

our dear Jesus.
 
Because my parents had me baptized as an infant! 😛

Spent most of my life a “nominal, non-practicing” Catholic, looked for “truth” in many other places.
I finally “came home” about seven years ago,
and life has not been the same since! :love: :getholy:
