Why Are You Catholic?

Let me get this straight…you liked a girl who was Catholic but became Anti-catholic, correct?

And what really convinced you that Catholicism was the right “denomination”(for lack of a better word) for you?
She was what pushed me into a but I was already thinking about it. Believe it or not my Southern Baptist grandmother had a lot to do with it.

I agree with “tawny” – I love the Church – the Eucharist – etc., etc. I have no desire to belong to any other Religion – The Catholic Church was the Church founded by Jesus and I truly believe that!!!

Interesting!! 😃

So was it just the sheer beauty of the church that drew you close to the Orthodox faith? Also, did you have to go through a catechumen type period before becoming Orthodox? I know in the Catholic church children and adults who wish to convert or be confirmed in the faith have to go through classes first. Was this your experience as well?
The beauty was and is not my concern. It’s kinda hard to explain. When i had my first visit i knew almost nothing about the theology. Theology in Orthodoxy is kinda complicated. Before i visited the Church it was very hard for me to understand it, but after my visitation, i began to understand it. In my opinion—pardon, Orthodox!—when i ask a Catholic, their answer is mostly simple and straight to the point, but when i ask an Orthodox, they will make a long explanation first before getting to the real answer. For the example: I ask: is this shoe brown? Catholic: yes, that shoe is brown. Orthodox: the leather of that shoe is made out of crocodile, it will last longer, but yes, that shoe is brown.

I got headache LOL. Especially because i was baptized calvinism, know nothing about calvinism. Been raised Catholic at school, Protestant at home. 😃 🤷

It’s the prayers, the long standing which is obvious (for me, at least) as the act of honoring/respecting God in His presence, and we cross a lot of time during the liturgy.

Being a catechumen can take 3 years before chrismation. I wish there is also class like RCIA (i have ever attended RCIA).

Or Lutheran? Or Muslim? Or Jewish?

I was curious as to what made you become a member of your faith or what’s keeping you there. Is there some intellectual argument that really won you over? Is there some aspect of the faith that kept you going there?

Let’s use this thread to compare and contrast reasons for being Catholic, Baha’i, Buddhist, or whatever you are!🙂
I was baptized Catholic, but poorly catechized and left the Church in my teens for a Baptist student fellowship whose adherants were not afraid to carry their bibles to school. I envied their courage and conviction. They taught me how to read and study the Scriptures, a skill I never learned in my own formation. Eventually I went to a Protestant Seminary and studied my way back to my Catholic faith. 😃

In the Southeastern United States which I will call the south from here on out there are a lot of former Catholics. Some of them do not seem like they were catechized all that well. I remember talking to one guy I went to highschool with and he said that he was raised Catholic but he did not know that much about it and asked me how often I go to Mass and I said every Sunday which is true, generally. He asked me how often the Catholic Church offers mass and I told him everyday. I told him that “if you believed that you were really receiving the body and blood of Christ wouldn’t you want to be able to do it everyday?” To my surprise he agreed to it he thought that was a great way of putting it.

I suppose I remain a Muslim because of Islam’s rigid simplicity. Tawheed is the backbone of Islam; it’s simple enough for a child to understand. No intermediary, no clergy that you must submit to and no book that has you performing mental gymnastics-- It’s about you and the Creator one on one.

Plus, there’s the Qur’an; a practical, intellectually stimulating document.

I was Baptized a Catholic as a baby without choice.
At middle-aged I started practicing Catholicism by choice.😉

For many reasons I became a Lutheran many years after converting to Catholicism from being nominally Christian. **When I joined the RC I threw myself into headlong and did all those things that my spiritual director told me to do. **I went to daily mass and prayed the rosary, confession weekly etc. But I would stay awake night worried that I would still go to hell. I worried about wether or not my contrition was true or not, or whether or not I forgot some sin in confession. All of my religious works were offering me no comfort at all, in fact the opposite was true. The more I did them the less comfort and peace I had. I began to loathe the obligations of the church. Combine this with some very negative experiences at my local parish church. I decided to return to my Protestant roots. My buddy and I checked out a local LCMS parish and the pastor told me the gospel and it was like coming up for air.
Was your spiritual director a “traditionalist Catholic”?

My answer would have been gibberish. (I was less than two months old when I became RC.)

I’m Catholic because it is the true church established by Jesus Christ.

Why is this is in the “non-Catholic” thread? 🙂

Because I was led to the Church by Our Lady.

I thought you didn’t submit to a book that has you doing mental gymnastics. LOL

In my teens I began seeking truth in various religions… I attended church and accepted Jesus. As I studied the various religions I began to strongly feel that I could not accept one and reject the others. In the early sixties I was involved in the civil rights movement and later the peace movement… It was around 1965 that I discovered some Baha’i books in the local library and found that all my highest aspirations were included in the principles of the Baha’i Faith. I then became a Baha’i… Later married in the Faith and raised my children according to the principles and teachings of the Faith.

Looking back over the past fifty years I am so happy that the Faith influenced my life and has helped my children as well!😉

I found you wrote what was in my mind. I can echo your words as to why after years of searching the first time I entered a Friends meeting house, I was Home. The utter simplicity of belief and grace I experienced during Meeting convinced me of Truth.

The approach to the Bible Friends had allowed me to finally understand where Christianity had been and where it should have gone… But didn’t.

I believe I am catholic through the infinite grace of almighty God given to me through His Incarnate Word, my Lord Jesus Christ.

I am a cradle Episcopalian, but do not attend Episcopal church. I attend the local Roman Catholic church with my RC husband. And before anyone asks, no, I am not converting any time soon.

I attend because I don’t want the SSM thing in my face. I don’t care if they want to get “married,” I just don’t want it in my face. I know I will never see in the Catholic Church.

Is your Episcopalian parish knee deep in SSM couples/weddings? I understand the SSM thing has upset you but I’m not quite understanding why you don’t want to attend your own church.

Are you never going to attend your own church again or is it temporary? I only ask because I sense a spiritual unease of unspoken anger and resentment towards your own church in your post…or am I reading too much into it.

As a cradle Catholic I wasn’t sure what the Church was until I got married. It is beauty of Sacrament of Matrimony I slowly started to see the wisdom of Jesus’ Church. Family life made me a better person ( still long way to go) but I am truly grateful to Jesus and what he did for all man.

Main thing for me is I see all things can become properly ordered and reason to believe in the Church is the only way to Truth and look forward to Heaven , when my work on earth is done.

Amen.

MJ
